Thanks Kamon, you really helped describe the single deep brood box system to me in a different perspective. Always a proponent of two deeps, queen excluder, and mediums on top for honey, glad to see someone practicing this method of yours and succeeding. Like the comment if Bob Binnie's hives can swarm, yours can too! :) 🐝

So, did the queen go above the excluder to lay a couple of cells and then come back down to continue with her day job ? Or some "smart" bee moved the eggs...? trying to supersede her because there's not enough brood pheromone. I seen it before with some cages we use for brood breaks. But most beekeepers don't believe bees move eggs. O yeah, I like the optimism too. A good spring flow does wonders for it

Watching a queen IS awesome and no, it never gets old. I think that hive was the chillest one I've ever seen. It's great what a queen with a good temperament can do for a colony. That gal is a nice, fat laying monster, too.

Thanks Kaymon, never get tired of your videos. Single brood box seems like a good idea. This year we accidentally did it. Could not get in field due wet conditions. Seemed to work well. We did not split hive at all. Just put queen under excluder with alot of pulled out, but empty frames. All 16 of 19 queens were still there. Marked yellow. The last queen you showed looked like it had a white mark.

I dont use excluder but put a box of drawn and undrown foundation above bottom brood to let bees in box above bottom to hatch and backfield with honey since it already has honey and pollen in it. Sometimes to much pollen so makes it hard to exstract. But it gives bees space to exspand and make drawn foundation.

Running single brood hives how do you go about removing the honey supers are you leaving any on the hive over summer for them to feed on or are you pulling it all off and pushing all the bees down into the brood chamber and feeding them during the summer? Thanks for the videos.

We're having an issue with our more established hive's brood chambers being filled up with bee bread. I was trying to keep everyone in single brood boxes but I'm thinking I need to throw another brood box on them so the queen has somewhere to lay because I don't have any extra drawn comb. Also I wanna ask, how many colonies do you keep on your home property and what is the distance between the yards? I mentioned keeping a hundred colonies on our 23 acres to a friend and he said that's too many in one area.

Hi Kamon, I'm watching your videos from Wellington, New Zealand. Our season is the opposite to yours, so we're heading into winter. Nice to see the fun and games happening in the northern hemisphere as we wind down. Funny though that being separated by 1,000s of kilometres/miles you're also having problems with pollen blocking the brood area when the blackberry comes into flower! Ditto. And yes, it's grey-green in colour. Happens in the Wellington area around the 3rd week in November. Taking a nuc off and making sure the queen gets the new empty combs in the brood area filled up with young brood just as the blackberry comes into bloom means the field bees can't put the pollen in the brood area. Play the queen off against the workers 🙂. Have a great season my northern hemisphere cousins.

I can't remember when I wrote you a long comment last time. (used to be 'varroa gone' guy.. the older one). Did you notes that one with the cells above excluder. They had only eggs and capped brood. So it's about pheromones.. not enough brood pheromone around, so you could be right about superseding her.. it's the trigger that makes them do it. I'm a caging for brood break guy and I see that a lot. I even invented a method with it to change me my old queens at the same time when I treat oxalic on broodless hives with the old queen caged. They want to supersede her.. and the hive is full of bees that never fed nobody.. it's like a starter with a box of pollen, where used to be brood. I'm not sure i wouldn't breed from her. They had less pollen in the frames than the second one and from here it looked like they are faster to move nectar up.. which is what a honey producer wants. Maybe the swarming impulse.. as you cutout cells it stopped than started again.. ending with the queen stopping and starting laying eggs.. just an idea, opinion. I had times before with caged queens when bees moved eggs. Same as that.. nothing on the frame, only the cell. I let it develop and it was a queen. It wasn't very good but it wasn't laying worker. So far I had it 3 times over the years. I think there's a group of "smart" bees who tries it, but so far i didn't see them make a good queen.. anyway it's all about pheromones. And long comments. How's going with this year's flow. Are you happy with it

@@kamonreynolds caging or using any other brood break changed my way of beekeeping. Varroa isn't a problem anymore. Good luck with the season.

Hey Kamon! Who long does it take for a virgin queen to go on her mating flight after emerging? Thx

Depends on the weather but I have had queens emerge and be laying in 7-8 days later. Not all are that fast and weather can slow that down a bit. Typically I plan on them not taking their mating flights for 4 days after emergence. I wait 14 - 15 days after cell drop to do checkbacks
