I drive a semi for a living (Here in the UK we call them 'artics' (short for articulated goods vehicle)), at the moment I am furloughed on full pay because I am at serious risk from Covid-19, I am due to return to work in a few weeks. I don't have enough bees to even call it a hobby yet, never mind a side line. But if I could never, ever go back to driving then for sure I would not. Sure, it is a regular wage, but there is also your sanity, your wife (hi Laurel!) and your family, and that is priceless.

I'm giving the 4 way mating nucs a try this year. My first round was a total failure on my part. I'm going to give them another try starting tomorrow. I do like how the frames are all the same and you don't need anything special for these. Maybe next year... Keep doing what you are doing Kamon!
@brianmahern66994 жыл бұрын
We run three frame deep mating nucs and prefer over mini-mating nucs. Frames easily transferred into 10 frame setup or 4 frames double nucs. We can drop a mated queen on a well covered good brood frame she laid into four frames nuc full of drawn comb and within six weeks strong enough to transfer into ten frame equipment.

I really like these 3-1 queen castles, they work great. I have a few of them and always liked using them. A few years ago I built a dozen or so two frames...I hated those damn things. Several times when I was having to move colonies around to larger equipment, the darn queen would be on the box wall and I couldn't get my hand down in there to catch her and my hand isn't that big. Also feeders are easier to use with bigger boxes. The mini mating nucs are pretty cool with an incorporated feeder inside but they are small and tricky to manage. Our weather continues to suck here as well. I'm also having a damn hard time getting queens mated this year and back in the hive. I even lost some capped brood in one split a while back one night it got so cold and I guess I didn't get enough bees to stay in the split, anyway it didn't work out and I had to fix that one.

My videos suck pretty bad but I just posted a 4-parter where I did a split using the "queen castle". Mine are a bit different in that they're built as queen castles. I use old deeps. The dividers I use are permanent and extra tall. Three lids to keep bees separate. It's the same thing. Yesterday I split a 20-frame colony 8 ways.

Kamon, I really like the idea of having 3, three frame mating boxes in one hive body. Personally if I had one of those I would make 3 covers from maybe 1/4 or 3-8 inch material to go under the migratory lid. That way I could work in the middle without opening either outside compartment. You have way more experience than I do so please tell me the cons of doing it my way.
@russellkoopman30044 жыл бұрын
Split the top you may get water in the hive?? I like your idea if you can make it waterproof.
@davidtmp4 жыл бұрын
You can use the material the dividers are made of and make 3 covers for each section. Then the lid goes on top. When you remove the lid, you can remove one cover and work 1 section at a time.
@donbearden19534 жыл бұрын
Russell Koopman, 3 inter cover lids that are under the migratory lid and the migratory lid keeps the water out just like it does now.

@@donbearden1953 That would work great. Didn't think of that. I was thinking hinges and more complicated things. That would be simple and effective.

I have found 2 frame Queen Castles don't work well. Maybe for very short term use. The 3 frame Queen Castles fared MUCH better & allowed more time for the queen to establish a nice brood nest. The problem I had with both and I can see coming with yours is ventilation. When the temps got up into the upper 80's & 90's, the colony got too hot inside which caused a lot of various problems. I remedied this issue with a using a hole saw to cut a 2" - 3" hole in the opposite side of the box from the entrance and covered is with bottom board screen which allowed a nice cross flow ventilation. What worked best was cutting a 2" - 3" hole in the cover boards & screening them off which allows the hot humid air to rise out of the box. As the brood nest grew larger, I either moved them into a nuc or removed one of the separator boards to allow for a few more frames. I gotta finish my wax dipping too. It has just been too cool to do it without burning a LOT of propane. I have been nursing my bees along with food patties to keep the colony sizes large as possible with hopes of catching what precious little remains of the nectar flow. Already found a few hives honey bound. Hope your nectar flow situation picks up too. Best of luck! 👍

Great risks can provide great rewards. Man without a plan is planning to fail. My dad always told me that if I work for someone I will never get ahead - just grind on paycheck to paycheck. He also said it's not how much you make it's how much to you spend.

Kamon, you do a great job, don't sell yourself short. I really like your idea of a single hive body with 3 separate colonies under one roof with a plan to provide more room for expansion. Have you thought about a 6 frame nuc with a divider and a 12 frame hive body with a divider should you need to overwinter two colonies side by side? 6 and 12 divides very nicely by 3. Still looking forward to meeting your wife.

Kamon, work is definitely more consistent and easier, but it takes you away from family too. I don't know how some commercial beeks supposedly raise 25k queens and work their apiaries by them selves and sell out?

Kamon I was hoping you might have some advice for new beek. I have a new package that superceeded the Queen about 2 weeks after she started laying. Now I have 15 queen cells. Most are on plastic foundation. Some on wax Grrrrrrrr. I’m gonna try push in cages I made. This queen was laying a really good pattern I don’t know what happened. Maybe it was me. It was after the first inspection but I know I didn’t kill her. How should or can I release virgins in matting nucs? I was gonna try grafting this year but now this happened. I made about 12 - 3 frame mating nucs this winter. Any suggestions? The cells look nice and big. I’m hoping I can do something. Also you are in my family’s prayers. I know it’s hard and it sucks. I’m so great full for inspiring my autistic son like I’ve told you before. He never misses nor do I, any of your vids. Prayers to your family and you!!!! Thank you

What do you do for feeding all three nucs?Top feeder holes or inside feeders?For me i like a five frame nuc with 1 frame food and 2 frames of sealed brood with just a small amount of eggs.I put in 2 plain string frames.I feed them for a mim.of 10 days with a hole in the top for feeding.I make my nucs between new moon and full moon. I put a date on the top and don't open that box for 30 days and i get 80% on a good mated queen.FYI if you open the hive before the 30 days i will slap your hands and call you a very bad boy.Just kidding have a fun bee day!

Just my opinion. Don't go back to the 9-5. Figure out how to make it on your own or you will have to just keep going back to the 9-5 every time something comes up. It's tough but you will eventually have to learn to adapt or you'll never make it.
