As you can see.... My avatar has been the Cassowary for decades now. Blue Skinned walkers of the forest, armed with an inner toe up to 10 inches long, spreading seeds to keep the ecosystem healthy, and taking no nonsense from anybody ! Plus, females choose many mates who then incubate the eggs and raise the young. :-) Love these young Cassowaries... no cask on the head yet !

Hi Kenan Thanks for sharing another trip to Blake's Exotic Ranch. Those casowary are so large. They do look like a dinosaur. How exciting that you hand fed one. The Emu was very nice to. The other animals are so friendly. Yes now Sophia will want a donkey. He has such an awesome variety of birds, and animals. And a bonus, you have some quail to feed your repties. Look forward to your next trip to see Blake again. Cindy

My new animal obsession is cows, especially the Highland cows and the mini cows as I call them. I have always loved donkeys and goats too. I would be so happy to have big a property with many many cats (yes I'm a cat lady) and farm yard animals plus some kind of enclosures good for English weather.

9:08 Not same Family, same Infraclass: Palaeognathae, one was left out, fairly newly added but there's also the family Tinamidae (Tinamous), so there are six living ratite types, Struthionidae (Ostrich), Rheidae (Rhea), Tinamidae (Tinamou), Apterygidae (Kiwi), this one is debated between being, Casuariidae (Cassowary & Emu) or Casuariidae (Cassowary), Dromaiidae (Emu). Tinamous are found through out Central and South America, with nine different recognized genus split into two subfamilies, Tinamous are the only living ratite that can fly (just) and roost in tree. Despite being found in the Americas, the Tinamous closest relative is (was) the Moas of New Zealand, and despite being found in New Zealand, the Kiwis closest relative is (was) the Elephant-birds of Madagascar.

I'll say this for emus or ostriches -- you know they're being honest when they peck you on the head! Some animals are born ornery! I don't know about these rheas! At least I know about the other two giant bird species! LOL PS -- The NASTIEST animal I've seen in zoos was a koala, surprise, surprise! When those things start shrieking, it's annoying. Even screaming young children and rampaging gorillas aren't that bad! Yes, I did witness a silverback(?) gorilla go crazy in the gorilla house at the Lincoln Park Zoo (Chicago) decades ago. I've never seen an animal get so abruptly angry and look motivated to KILL. They evacuated the gorilla house QUICKLY. I was 8-10 feet away from the reinforced glass, minding my own business, when that gorilla charged and SLAMMED against the glass. It WAS trying to get out. I think the animal was tranquilized but I never found out. I got the heck out of that exhibit ASAP! PS PS -- I've eaten ostrich meat. Stick with turkey and chicken! Ostrich meat is kind of tough and bland from what I remember. I sampled it when I lived in Chicago about 25 years ago.
