Love the radiated tortoises! Great look at their care, and it's definitely important to point out the cultural aspects involved with the conservation of tortoises in their home range. A Small Correction. It was perfectly legal to purchase a wild caught Radiated Tortoise before 1975 when they were put on Appendix I CITES List. You could own and breed, and were not regulated before then, so not all are illegally imported. Young ones imported in 1975 and before are just getting in their 40's and 50's. With proper care there are several around still from those legal importations. (Ethical, I can not address.) I always point to Radiated Tortoises as a huge success conservation wise as many more than just zoos in institutions have preserved these gems. Private individuals worked with them with success. Hyacinth Macaws as well. Clearly, there are more Sulcata Tortoises there in the USA and Captivity worldwide than there are in the wild. They will be around for years to come. Where can I find info on older tortoises that need re-homing? I have a big Florida yard that would be great for them but I would rather not start with hatchlings . Their longevity (and my age) makes it hard for me to commit to more than 20 to 30 years.

hey Kenan, great bit on the conservation of these guys, really well said. When you think in the perspective of the Malagasy people it's not hard to understand why this happens. You did a great job outlining the road to recovery and captive husbandry for these animals and your passion is inspiring. thanks for the great info as usual. Do you have an opinion on the legal exportation (CITES) of animals to supply captive breeders? (of non endangered animals) in effort to relieve pressure from smugglers. Ex. Australia not exporting native wildlife

I like that you throw bones in your enclosure. I have a cow skull and a hog skull in my pen with my Redfoots, and they are always nibbling on it. Keeps their beaks trimmed and provides calcium.

While I def agree that in a perfect world, the radiated tortoise (as well as many other species) should be left in Madagascar, with how much habitat destruction is going on over there there won't be any habitat left for them. That's why they keep re-opening up export quotas on many species simply because if they don't get them out, they die.
