Kenan, anyone who has followed you at all knows better than to accuse you of not taking the best care of your animals. We're here because time and time again, you show us the ups and downs and everything you do to make their lives the best they can be, so we know how much you care and how much work you put into these habitats. Love you, man!
@ThatAnimalChannel2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. We all have to learn and sometimes it's the hard way. Hercules and Brutus where both males among females during mating period. A video a few years back showed that they had been aggressive twords each other. It would have been wise to probably house them separately, but at the same time, for years they've been relatively fine together. Any animal owner knows it only takes one time. Especially as a dog owner, I know it only takes one time for a mistake to happen. That's why i don't believe in allowing a dog off a leash or out of a fenced in yard. Just as an example. Otherwise, he is pretty great at what he does!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how it takes one accident and Kenan works to fix the issue and try to provide these animals with the best care and love. So many zoos and pet owners who don’t care as much, would keep the exact same feeding conditions. For the simple reason it would make it easier for themselves and be more convenient. Kenan goes out of his way time and time again to give the best to his animals.

Kenan, 40 years of turtle and tortoise keeping has taught me that some just eat weird stuff. I have watched them intentionally eat rocks and mulch. I used to think they ate rocks as some primitive digestive aide, similar to birds, but I don't know. I do know that some develop odd habits or behaviors much like humans do and stick with them. Maybe they're expressing their own uniqueness - who knows.

Thank you so much for sharing with us. My Sulcata baby was picking up little pebbles and shells in the grass when i would take him outside to graze and walk. I had no idea it was happening. He started to look sick. I took him to the vet and they did an ×-ray. There were a lot of little pebbles. We went to the vet weekly for about 2 months. He eventually passed all the pebbles. He was also prescribed critical care. Strudel and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge very much. ❤️🐢

Kenan I've used dog kennel trays for years with my tortoises. Its shallow enough for small torts to get into but deep enough to stop any spillage. I also use dough proofing trays for water dishes on my larger torts. I bury them so the tray is flush with the ground. That way it can't be flipped over if the tort steps on the side of the tray. For hatchlings I use bird cage trays because they are super shallow and baby reds and sulcatas can easily walk in an out. Hope this helps and sorry for your loss.

Please consider the possibility that it was cribbing, some animals do strange behaviors when they are bored. It's like horses chewing fences. It's a behavior that serves no purpose, but the animal is bored. Some salt marsh hay or timothy hay in the freezing weather area would curb the "cribbing", but you as the keeper will always know more about your animals than I as a watcher, and you are usually correct about issues. Please don't feel bad about losses, you respond to them and try to stop any issues asap and I feel that anyone else would lose way more than you do. YOU DO A GREAT JOB AS A KEEPER.

As for the surface they are walking on, how about topsoil about 2-3 inches thick and then when mulch is available, mulch the soil. I am so sorry you lost one but now you know what to look out for. I really think food trays would be a better surface for them to eat off. That way it eliminates association with those pebbles. I guess these guys are Pavlov’s tortoises, when it comes to food shapes. Ask the Doc what he thinks about this or the guys at the Zoo. I am just a Vet Tech and not familiar with tortoises. I watch a Biologist on KZbin, whom I think you know who takes care of Box turtles in New Jersey.

Interesting video friend. Good to see the other tortoises aren't chomping down on the small pebbles as much. I was thinking of some landscape fabric over the existing soil with a thick layer of mulch on top of it but it wouldn't allow them to dig and might create a mess. Maybe on the inside of the enclosure where the bask and get away from the cold the mulch and fabric would help keep them warmer. Just brainstorming... Who doesn't need a little Metamucil in their diet!

Sad that you lost one. It might have just been a rock eater. You don't see it often, but I've seen that in many different animals. Over the years I've seen a couple of dogs, a cat, and a bird that died because their stomach was full of rocks. An "old-timer" Veterinarian that I used for many years said he sums it up as the animals being like certain children that are always sticking everything in their mouth. He said he had seen a couple of horses over the years that had done the same thing, and it wasn't like small rocks they were accidentally picking up with their food, They actually watched one of the horses going and getting rocks from the center of a driveway that was nothing but rocks. Either way, I'm glad to see the others were clear.
