I saw this coming many years ago. Most of the Soviet Navies big ships were built in Ukraine and now that’s over. Russia has shipyards with aged equipment and lack of skilled personnel who cannot build anything beyond a frigate/corvette sized surface ship. They also can still build effective submarines albeit at a slow production rate but all in all, the Russian navy is but a faint shadow of its former Soviet glory.

Darn. I was hoping they'd keep throwing more resources at it.

The Admiral Kuznetsov, what a symbolic representation of not only Russia itself, but especially of its military. My god, what a joke. Its last sortie to the shores of Syria resulted in losing a few planes to non-combat related accidents on the deck. Fortunately its constant companion, the Combat Tug Boat, was always by its side. We may not be perfect in the west, but that sort of rampant graft and corruption at least has some checks and balances.

@RonaldSaylorАй бұрын
That aircraft carrier was always a joke. It could not maintain service out at sea. It repeatedly had to be towed back to port.
@ottopartz1Ай бұрын
When it went to Syria, it traveled with a dedicated tugboat just in case. Also it was easy for the NATO countries to track because of its embarrassing belching black smoke.

It could reportedly launch Su-33s, provided that they weren't carrying ordinance or a full fuel load. And the pilots were good at floppy "cobra" landings.

It was built that way. It was junk from the get go, everywhere it went, there was a big open ocean tug to go with it, to tow it every time it stopped running. From the beginning, it made the sailors sick due to the dirty bunker oil it burned in the engines. That's why the black smoke constantly.

When you think that for a "Naval Power", they had only 1 aircraft carrier. They have 0 now, and there are small countries with at least one. Without sea airpower, their fleet is useless and unprotected.
@kiabtoomlauj6249Ай бұрын
That's why, all the big talks from Fox, RT, and Co on Russia's behalf notwithstanding, I keep saying: you don't really need the US mighty Air Force, with over 10,000 NATO grade fighter jets, bombers, tankers, and AWACS type aircraft to pummel Russia's entire armed forces to dust. The SMALLEST of the US branch of armed forces, the US Marines CORPS (not the US Marine CORE, like our great Leader Trump called it, wrote about it).... alone, with ~800 or so units of LARGELY vertical-take-off/vertical-landing capability (F-35B, Harrier jets, AH-IZ Viper gunships, Super Stallions/King Stallions & 65 or so KC-130 flying gas stations) ... would be enough to turn most of Russia's various strategic & tactical bases, from old German Konigsburg (now Russian Kaliningrad) in the Baltics to its far east, Bering Sea region, by Alaska... to unusable bases. All Russians could say is: We have NUKES, more nukes than y'all have... so that ain't gonna happen! That's all they could say.... CONVENTIONALLY, Russia's military --- structurally, logistically, and tactically ---- is NO MORE advanced, no more capable than what they had under Comrade Stalin, in WW2: it's largely a MEAT GRINDER APPROACH to fighting... able & willing to use 5, 10, or 20 men to overwhelm an opponent's 1-2 counterparts. But in WW2, Russia was still growing. And in the USSR's height, 1960 - 80's era, the Russians put a dozen or so NON-RUSSIAN neighboring people/states into the Russian military and make those people WORK for the Moscow-based Russians, a northern European people. Today, Moscow/White Russians are in a rapid population decline. The large SOLDIERS they're will/able to use against a TINY MILITARY like Ukraine that had NO AIR FORCE or NAVY, & a defense budget in pre-2022 or just $6B.... THAT RUSSIA MILITARY's men... they wouldn't even last more than a few months, against a nation like America that could take out thousands of such men with a few thousand WELL PLACED missiles and bombs "released" from 150 to 500 miles away, distances that NO FOOT SOLDIERS --- even suicidal ones like Russians --- could even traverse, before they're all turned into ashes... Again, Ukraine doesn't even have 2% of that American military capability; and that's why the Russian military looks so menacing, in southern and eastern Ukraine... ON FOOT & in literal WW2 tanks and other analog era armored vehicles!
