F-16 aircraft will start arriving in Ukraine this year with trained pilots, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said during the meeting of the "Ramstein" group on Friday. The April 26 meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group held in Ramstein format today discusses the adjustment of the supply of military aid to Ukraine. Dmytro Lazutkin, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Defence Ministry said earlier that the meeting would primarily be about the supply of weapons, projectiles of various calibers, primarily 155-mm. “It is also about the fact that ATACMS ammunition will be supplied to Ukraine," he said. "Preparing for today's Ramstein meeting - we'll discuss, among other things, how to swiftly overcome the difficulties and problems that have accumulated over the past six months while we awaited a decision on American support," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said during his evening address on April 25. He also expressed gratitude to all countries that have made decisions to support Ukraine, as well as to Ukrainian defenders, cities, and communities. The political decision has already been made; now, what's needed are "the contents of the packages with the necessary weaponry" and logistics, Zelenskyy noted. The previous Ramstein format meeting discussed the supply of ammunition, air defense systems, and F-16 training for Ukrainian pilots.

The fact that it has taken so long for the F16 aircraft to arrive in Ukraine is primarily due to the fact that it is an extremely advanced aircraft to be trained in, and that the right service facilities had to be present. But now things finally seem to have worked out and that there are enough pilots to operate the planes and now I sincerely hope that the Ukrainians will really benefit from them. Slava Ukraine! 💙💛💙💛

That training is difficult and they did it very quickly. It must be safe so yes they are well trained. The most of the plane’s are ready and they are already ‘on the border’ . No worries.

many of us have certainly expressed a lot of doubts about this whole endeavor but it will be interesting to see how viable and survivable they can be at this point. i imagine they will be really trying to play it safe and try and keep the bombers back or get used to deploy long range missiles but i think they still have their work cut out for them.

In this war, there is a lack of airplane shelters. Then every single shelter would have to be destroyed with a direct hit, and not several planes with clusters of ammunition. Iraq had shelters with 2m thick concrete. In contrast, neither Ukraine nor Russia has bunkers for fighter planes.

Military jets are not like cars, oh well if you know how to drive a BMW, you can just sit in a Lexus and drive.. Croatia MIG 21 experienced pilots trained for 15 months in France to fly on Rafale jets. There is no point or benefit to have Ukrainian pilots get up in the air in F16 and then crash or get stupidly hit with a missile, or quickly damage F16 with improper maintenence.. Pilots need to be taught English, NATO standard flying, rules, air force and attack and defence methods.. it is not just so simple as people imagine..

Quite a while. Even with airliners it takes a while to get trained on the different systems and controls, handling characteristics, operational envelope, etc for say a Boeing 737 versus a larger Boeing aircraft, or Airbus plane. To add to the problem with Ukraine, there is an entire maintenance infratructure that need to be trained. Also most manuals for both pilots and mechanics are in English and must be translated and the pilots need to have at least some familiarity with English.
