It's great in the Sri Lankan hill country. I was there 5+ years ago while the civil war raged and remember locals on the train giving me a turn sitting in the one available seat shared by three people. It was also good to be greeted by strangers walking along the railway tracks out of Ella.

Doug,I had the same experience. In Sri Lanka people stare and my wife hates people staring as it is considered rude. However, very often in Sri Lanka people want to know more about their neighbour. My experience was that many people who stared told me about what they had gathered from their staring . very often the starer learned that I had problems standing and offered their seat or if I asked for a turn to sit down, they happily stood up if they were fit enough, for a short while, to give me a chance to sit down. its not rocket science. its just intelligent behaviour ,not robotically following a formula.

A golden tip for that ride given to me and my wife by the host of a b&b that we stayed in: DO NOT GET ON THE TRAIN IN KANDY, as there are lots of people who try to do the same thing and the train has obviously limited capacity. Take a tuktuk to a station earlier up the way (20-30 minutes ride from the city center), buy your tickets there and avoid huge crowds and waiting lines. And improve your chances of finding a seat.

yes you are correct.. better get on to train either from peradeniya station or kadugannawa by the time you reach kandy u can get seats also in 3rd class... if you getiing in midway buy 3rd class tickets..

I just returned from Sri Lanka and took the train from Nanu Oya (reserved seats in 2nd class no AC just fans and it was a holiday, very packed and was only 4 hrs) to Kandy and wished I had done it the other way as most of the spectacular sights were see during the drive up. But one thing to keep in mind is if you start in Ella or Nanu Oya it will be cold in the morning but will warm up really quickly :-) so wear layers. I was told you didn't want 1st class seats as there is AC and the windows don't open, don't know for sure but everyone was very friendly on the train and if you wanted to take a photo out one of the windows they would move out of the way. Enjoyed your videos of Sri Lanka one of my most favorite places to be!

@@IntAffair You do get to see on the drive up to Ella are Devon and St Clair waterfalls and the Kelani river where there is white water rafting. The short stretch of river near Kitulgala was the filming location for the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and there is an interesting automobile collection at the Plantation Hotel. Little hidden treasures that Sri Lanka is full of.

ABSOLUTELY love this video! The train ride reminds me of my experience in Thailand when I rode from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi. You really get immersed in the culture; food getting handed out, fans blowing to try to keep you cool, standing for hours on end. I actually go out of my way to book the lowest class ticket possible so you get an idea of what the locals experience. The views from Little Adams Peak looks picturesque and i cant wait for the next video!

@@IntAffair I would say so. I like to immerse myself as much as possible into the local culture whenever possible, plus I'm fairly frugal. The only part I should consider being more frugal on is the airfare; I tend to try to get cheap upgrades from economy when possible because I can't stand being stuck in a tight uncomfortable seat for 10-24 hours.

If you want to see elephants then i recommend to go udawalawa National park, pinnawala, Yala national park (sri lanka largest forest). If you want to go mountain areas then i recommend Ella, little adamspeak, ella rock , Nuwaraeliya gergory lake so cool, Adamspeak ( buddha temple). Also srilanka beautiful city and cleanest city is kandy. You can go sigiriya (the lion rock) it's included unesco heritage list.

Pretty accurate tips, thanks. For the train journey we did the same, we bought 2nd class tickets but the train was so overcrowded that we just stepped out and gave up. Fortunately, on the way out of the train station we spotted some empty places on the 3rd class train. 3rd class is mostly occupied by locals who get on and off very often, so it is easier to find a seat there. Don’t fall into the 2nd class trap that is mostly advised on all the social network out there.

I found that in travel to southeast Asia, i was able to actually rent nice apartments for less than $200 a month in both Siem Reap, Cambodia and Chiang Mai, Thailand. I didn't book online. For four months in Chiang Mai, I rented a cheap hotel room.. and then spent the next few days tracking down a nice apartment deal. And for Siem Reap, Cambodia, I met a person online in a Siem Reap group that was living in Siem Reap, and he was able to get me a great deal on an apartment for two months in Siem Reap. Way way cheaper than a hotel. If your spending months somewhere in south and south east Asia..... rent an apartment. Every time...

Woow you guys spent way too much for lunch and dinner. A plate of rice nd curry chicken for locals would cost around 250 max. And another tip, when trekking ella rock you guys turned to ur right from the foot bridge, but to be honest the left side is much more scenic than that. Also there is another cut which i took on first time i went there, it was through the forest and only a very few knows that. A littlebit hard to navigate and a bit long but its totally worth the amazing views you see. I think for that you should go under the railway bridge just before the kital ella station, tnhe curved one. Anyways guys this was an awesome video. Enjoyed alot❤ do visit srilanka again, there is so much to explore here!

Drone laws are a touchy subject. They are constantly changing. As we’re not officials and probably not the best to give legal advice on drone piloting, our recommendation is to check online before your trip to see if there are any new laws or requirements for flying. I can tell you that we've never had an issue, anywhere we've been, with airport security trying to confiscate our drone. Hope this helps! Safe travels!
