We did this journey on the night train, it’s a freight train delivering to all the stops, but there’s only two carriages and no tourists… so we got the best seats, and had chats with a few locals. Also got sunrise over the hills It takes longer because of the delivery times but worth it

Always ask the railway people where the 2nd class coaches stops in the platform so you will be standing right in front of it when the train arrives. Don't forget the World end hike. Its a quick train ride back from Ella to Ohiya. And don't be shy to ask where people get off so you can be standing next to that person's seat.

Iv'e done this journey 5 times now. Earlier this year I hiked along the railway for the last 40 miles. Only ten miles a day as the towns are roughly ten miles apart. so who wants to hike 20 miles a day. Ps yes I hiked the section with 14 tunnels.
