careful with those champagne colored bolts, they're either zinc dichromate or cadmium plated, both of which when heated make vapors that will kill you quite painfully if inhaled in enough quantity. of the two, cadmium is the more painful death, but zinc dichromate is pretty horrid too.

@@scallen3841 You don't have to spend money to do the job right. A quick hit on the grinder or even a file to clean the surface doesn't cost anything. A HSS tool bit is a couple dollars, and holding the bar in a tool holder does not cost a dime. It isn't what your equipment costs, but the methodology in which you use it. Some of the best craftsmen I have known have used what they have by putting a little extra work into doing the job right. Generally, you make a video to show the right way to do a machining operation, but I guess there's value to showing the wrong way to do an operation also...only trouble is, how is someone, who doesn't know the difference and is looking for information, supposed to get anything usable out of this?
@mnarsamir30314 жыл бұрын
Heat is generated due to friction
@DriveCarToBar3 жыл бұрын
@@ronplucksstrings7112 About the only thing wrong with this, is the fact that he used a ghetto rigged Jacobs chuck on the tailstock. But for demonstrating a proof of concept, I think this is dead on. As long as the pieces you're trying to weld aren't too large, you could find a good used 3-jaw or 4-jaw chuck and mount it on the tailstock and you'd have all you need to spin pieces together. The only difference here is that big inertia friction welding setups usually have a big flywheel that gets spun up and then the motor is disengaged while inertia provides the energy for the weld. But as long as you aren't stressing the motor too much on your lathe, I don't see an issue provided you can hold the parts square.
