(Kanjira lesson 2 can be found here! : • Kanjira lesson 2 )
Kanjira is a South Indian frame drum which borrows technique and rhythms from the double-sided drum called mrdangam. The right hand technique is very similar to that of the mrdangam and the tabla. Since the language is borrowed from mrdangam, some of the names of the sound will vary greatly even though there are really only three sounds on the kanjira.
Here is a key of some the sound names:
Dhin, Tham, Di, Jun -- these are all open bass sounds and are played on the kanjira with the index finger of your dominant hand on the edge (like a rim shot).
Ta, The -- this also played with the index finger, but it is a closed slap sound.
The, Ka, mi -- this is played with three fingers (middle, ring, and pinky). It is also a closed slap sound identical to the one finger slap. Many rhythms use the technique of alternating between the one finger position and the 3 finger sound very rapidly. (i.e. Taka Taka Taka Taka played like 16th notes).
And here are the exercises I went over in this video:
DHIN - DHIN DHIN KA DHIN DHIN KA
TA THE DHIN DHIN KA DHIN DHIN KA
(*note the dash (-) means rest or don't play anything on that beat)
THAM THAM DHIN DHIN KA DHIN DHIN KA
TA THE DHIN DHIN KA DHIN DHIN KA
And finally:
THAM TAKA TAKA DHIN KA DHIN DHIN KA
TA THE DHIN DHIN KA DHIN DHIN KA
