Statistics suggest that Kanlaon’s current eruption shouldn’t get any larger. Additional smaller explosions seem most likely although anything is technically possible.

In some reports, many people near the volcano (around 15km) heard a loud boom when it was erupting and thought of a bomb explosion. No record of broken glass or deafening ears. But the sound is real loud. There is a CCTV of people's reaction to the boom and a friend of mine who lives in Canlaon City heard it like a power fuse blows up and thought that it was that.

Interesting the 'main' pyroclastic flow went into the wind. maybe because the heat from the eruption was also pushed downwind and the upwind portion more rapidly lost support? Still amazing how good of an insulation layer ash/lava is and how long it takes for underlying material to cool

what if a lewotobi-like or ruang-like scenario happens? the volcano has degassing so much gas (e.g SO2) and im afraid that the accumulated magma beneath maybe larger than what we assume?
@IlovetheVoidQueen27 күн бұрын
I vividly remember it. It was a normal day. Students were in their last period/activities, or cleaning up. (students usually returned home at 3:45 or 4:25). Suddenly, a loud boom was heard. Everyone thought it was something called a 'boga', some thought it was an electrical transformer exploding (because it happened often), but I argued. It couldn't be, it was too large, and I felt wind going into my ear and go out the other. (From my little brother's accounts, he said his chairs slid across the floor, and one of the nearby classrooms had their walls crack a bit.) We couldn't see it at first. There were large obstructions like trees, the roof and other buildings..But once it grew tall enough, we saw it, and we knew; it had erupted again. (I wasn't there the first time, on June, I was out of town in the city of Bacolod.) It was my first time seeing an eruption, I feared for my life. Everyone did, especially for those who lived close. Those who lived close to several kilometers of the volcano were all carried to evacuation centers, mainly in La Castellana. My home town could only fit so many. Some were permanently not restricted from returning home (those within 6-km). Schools are unsure if they can return to class; with the survivors in two, and inhabiting the schools..If they were to bring back classes, well, all of them would be crammed into one space. A small facility used for housing COVID patients back when covid was prominent. Truly, this experience shook me. I am expecting it to happen again, but hopefully, with God's Grace, it will calm down, and return to its beautiful tranquility.

Respect the fertlity and harvest godess .Kanalon Volcano: This is likely a reference to Kanlaon Volcano, a stratovolcano in the Philippines. The name "Kanlaon" is derived from "Kan" (a prefix indicating respect) and "Laon", which refers to an ancient Visayan deity associated with fertility and harvest. So, it roughly translates to "The revered Laon" or "Lord Laon". Philippines: The name "Philippines" originates from the Spanish "Las Islas Filipinas", named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. In Filipino, it is called "Pilipinas" or formally "Republika ng Pilipinas", which translates to "Republic of the Philippines" in English.

Something to keep in mind - wind direction is always discussed in ‘from’ terms. A ‘north wind’ means the air is moving *from* the North to the South… So you could say ‘ash fell to the West of the volcano due to local winds’ - but saying ‘ash fell to the West of the volcano, as this represented the prevailing wind direction’ makes no sense…. I doubt anyone was confused, but might as well get these details right. (With wind we care where it comes from, as that will often determine the weather forecast. With sea currents it’s the opposite - we care where they’re taking you.)

It's very far. It's on the Island of Negros (blame the Spaniards)* and the closest large city is Bacolod and then Cebu on the neighboring island of the same name. When it comes to Manila the closest volcano is Taal, around 60 km to the south; and Pinatubo, around 90 km to the north. *The original Hiligaynon name is highly descriptive and very fitting.
