WOW Didn’t realize a raccoon could predate eagles as large as Wichita and Cheyenne. Also not familiar with those vocals Ellie was making. Fantastic video Androcat.💜🦅💜
@androcat125 ай бұрын
@PriscillaD225. Yes, a raccoon can take a non-flighted eaglet, or grounded/injured eagle. The vocals you hear are Ellie clucking, which they will do in stressful situations, and hissing, which may also be done in stressful situations. There is a female on another cam that does funny little hisses at her mate when fussing over stick placement. 💕

I've watched many eagle cams. This is the first time hearing an eagle hiss. Very interesting.
@androcat125 ай бұрын
@user-xk4do9ex2f. We don’t hear hisses very often on cams. Clucks we do hear more often. Clucks and hisses may be heard during stress/disturbance/rescues/rehab handling. Muhlady at SuperBeaks does short little hisses at the male when she is showing dominance during nest building.

Thanks for explaining Androcat! Just a couple of days ago, the 3 eglets rescued from the Denton Homes nest that got blown away, a raccoon was seen on the temporary nest humans graciously built. Thank goodness the eglets were taken away exactly for predation concerns before that or it could've ended really badly.
@androcat125 ай бұрын
@marciahoegg7899. YW 🙂. I have watched that cam since the first season, more closely a couple of seasons than this one. I did follow what happened. Everyone did their best, and the Denton’s are wonderful cam owners. They immediately went out to rescue the eaglets. I am grateful the eaglets were taken back into care. They are safe, and SOAR will do everything they can to raise them to fledge. They raised an eaglet from that nest several seasons back, after it fell. Too old to renest, and it fledged from SOAR. I will be looking for their updates!

It's stormy with tornadoes in Kansas. Good luck to the eagles. Raccoons are dangerous and hope they go away.

How scary for the eaglets. Sound asleep, then suddenly awoken by the sound of mama cussing and (symbolically) throwing china at your bed.
@androcat125 ай бұрын
@habslover2306. I am sure that was scary. Your description is funny tho lol. Dad was beside Mom on the branch, also cussing at the raccoon. 💜
@sunnysunnywu6971. YW 🙂. The adult eagles should be able to flush/scare a raccoon away. It’s scary to watch; we see it each season on cams at one nest or another. 💜

pesyira. YW 🙂. The raccoon may have just been looking for a nest to rest in, or may have been looking for eggs/chicks. It's just some of the many things they will eat. We see them in the owl tree at Farmer Derek's Farm also. Bonnie has had to strike them in the past, several times, to get them away from her nest/tree. One raccoon ate Bonnie's egg after she abandoned the nest the second season. That loss was not as hard to take, as that egg was not going to hatch. A raccoon killed an eaglet at the Fort St. Vrain nest a couple seasons back. That eaglet was a few weeks younger than these two. 😔

I believe i've read the Denton homes builder had a Temp. nest built and put up on the Spot --a low level Nest, 8 ft in height .I'm hoping the Builder has people on the ground around the Nest at nite to deter other ground predators as the 3 E's are back in the new nest reunited with their Parents. Eagles need a high tree to build a properly safe nest in. Than, as here, mom and Dad can be alerted. Eagles(among other Apex Predators) sleep with half their brain being constantly awake listening for sounds around the nest of a climbing Predator . Saw a Raccoon sev yrs ago in Pittsburgh, Pa nest on one of the Ohio Tributaries and it could be seen On IR cam(glowing eyes) sev ft below nest in the old nest limbs and a Parent in the nest was wing flapping at it(the sound) and eventually it ,as here, climbed down and looked elsewhere for food Thanks for posting.

@michaelhalahan. YW 🙂. The Denton eaglets were removed two days ago, 5-23-24, and taken back into care. They will be raised and released at S.O.A.R., a raptor rescue/rehab facility.

@@androcat12 yes i wrote a Post about it--partly to the dentons about AZ wildlife dept built replacament nest for extablished after studying therrain fpr fppd si[[;u etc Well made to my eye but eagles rejected it and went a mile away and built their own nest. There the AZ wildlife nest sits still--empty --waiting for a GHO or non nest building bird to use. Even experts like AZ wildlife dept can be wrong in what the Eagles want !
