Recorded live at The Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 31.1976.The opening acts were Head East and Ambrosia. The recording was called "The Mayhem Symphony". The song was from the LEFTOVERTURE album and the tour to support that album.
The song is a mixture of left over bits and pieces from Walsh and Livgren that the whole band contributed in weaving together. Originally this song was to be called Leftoverture but Dave Hope suggested that that would be a good name for the album. When Wally Gold(the bands manager) suggested Magnum Opus for the song the switch was made.
Steve Walsh - Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Xylophone and Vibraphone
Kerry Livgren - Guitars, Keyboards
Robby Steinhardt - Violin, Vocals
Dave Hope - Bass
Phil Ehart - Drums, Tympani
Rich Williams - Guitars

I've said it before, I'll say it now, and I will probably say it a billion more times.... Kansas is one of the best bands there is, and ever will be. Phil Ehart really is one of the best drummers there is, you can really hear that on this recording! Thanks rickyon!

I was living in Wichita when they recorded this for Two For The Show!!What you hear on the album was exactly what they did!No other band or few of them can replicate their sound onstage, but KANSAS always did! That's why they are my favorite!!!

Growing up (I'm 51 now), I loved music, played in bands, and listened to many groups. But I only ever BOUGHT albums from ONE group-the group I have held above all others musically ever since...Kansas! I have every album ever released. The whole is undoubtedly more than equal to the sum of its parts in this case. I've been mesmerized by their works, studied the sheet music, and all but worshipped them ever since I heard "Carry On" the first time back in '76. Had the honor of seeing them live for the first time at their "Pinnacle" (wink) in 1977 at St. John's Arena in Columbus, OH while on the Point of Know Return tour. IMO, Masque, Leftoverture, Point of Know Return are the best string of consecutive releases ever. I truly hope I get to meet Kerry, Steve, Robbie, or Rich someday so I can convey the impact their music has had.

I was at this show. The Mosque was a 3000 seat hall. It was torn down in the 90's. The show was sold out and it was broadcast live on WDVE radio that evening. WOW this brings back memories. Thanks

I never get tired of hearing this song. I've seen them many times live, but only got to hear/see this played in its entirety once, and that was when they toured on playing the 40th anniversary of Leftoverture in its entirety back in 2016. It was a 40 plus year journey of seeing them live to see this played once, but well worth it.

I had this whole concert on a cassette tape that my buddy taped for me off WDVE that night. We played that tape to death and it finally just wore out. I listened to lots of other recording but that particular concert is the one that made Kansas for me. 30 years later and I'm still missing that tape. I was recently on a business doing a 3 hour solo drive and I start thinking about this show. I conjured up Seri and asked him for a live Kansas concert at the Sierra Mosque in Pittsburg and sure enough he comes up with Lonely Winds. Gave me chills up and down my spine. Searched a little longer and found the whole concert on CD. Ordered it on the spot. Can't wait for it to arrive. Thanks for the awesome preview!

Did you ever get the CD? Does it sound as good as this track. If so, where did you find it, I must have a copy. PS, if you have not seen the new Leftoverture tour, when they come around go see it. Yeah, new members but 2 1/2 hours of Kansas, the whole Leftoverture album LIVE, and the band is tight!!!

Kansas has to be one of the most talented epic bands of all time. I began listening to them in 1975 right after I saw them open for Black Sabbath...yeah thats right. They simply blew me away. Now I was a hard core Sabbath fan but, after Kansas played, I personally wasn't into the Sabbath part. Leftoverature, IMO, is their pinnacle of songwriting and musicianship!

Yes, I agree with that! Indeed, an appropriate verb... Sometimes the fiddling works out for the better, sometimes it doesn't. Most times it does, of course! Yes, variety is very good, but I often prefer the original versions, with the original line-ups, but in the long run, that would get extremely boring. Have you heard anything of Camel? Andy Ward is a sublime drummer, his sound kind of reminds me of Barreimore's...

Well... The music is fantastic, but IMO Phil is a superior drummer to Bryan. I think Bryan uses the tom-toms too much. He is more of a "heavy" drummer than Phil... It's nice and sturdy, but it doesn't add anything in, which Phil's drumming does. A good comparasment is Doane Perry in Jethro Tull compared with Barriemore Barlow... Or Paul Burgess in Camel compared to Andy Ward. As a (not very good) drummer myself, I personally prefer Phil's style and sound.

The comment shows that this performance was at "The Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh,", really? Given how islam is operated THESE days, I would have NEVER guessed that muslims would EVER have had a rock and roll show performed in one of their mosques. The performance was AWESOME ---after all, we ARE talking about Kansas. But the venue? I'm confused. How did the muslims change so drastically?

Try Googling the venue. It's not a "Mosque" in the strict sense of the word.
