This audio track more than amply demonstrates why Kansas has been my favorite band for 45 years. This is from one of the best Kansas bootlegs out there. Track it down, if you can.

Got it! I’m a huge collector of their music. If there is a bigger ‘Wheathead’ in the U.K. than me, I’d love to meet them!

I've been a huge fan of Kansas since I heard their first release in the 70s and still am. They more than any other band after 1970 had a way with their progessive sound that moved every bit of your soul . These guys deserve more respect than they get. They are right up there with other great bands such as the Beatles , Led Zeppelin and the Eagles as far as being music that trudged it's own path. I guess you could say I'm preaching to the quire but this music always had a way of centering me.

I was living in Chicago in 1975 - 1976 I saw Kansas do this song in 1976 I remember Robby's intro to this song He said "If any of you have been to Juarez, Mexico you know what I'm am talking about in this song and I can smell what you all are smoking out there, I am from Las Cruces. New Mexico which is about 40 miles from Juarez so it was cool to here him say that

Phil Ehart is one of the most underrated drummers in rock history. Every bit as good as Neil Peart. Every live recording I see of Kansas, he just blows me away with how great his skill is.

"Bringin' It Back" makes me wish Steve would bring back his Hammond C3 organ. Steve was such an awesome organist & his Hammond C3 was such a big part of Kansas' overall sound on their first 5 albums including "Leftoverture", & "Point of Know Return". However, when "Monolith" came out, I was shocked to discover that Steve had traded his mighty Hammond C3 in for a thin-sounding Crumar organ and a 2nd Yamaha CP-70 piano. (Kerry also played one.), IMO, this forever changed Kansas' trademark sound.

Steve surely was an awesome organist!

So many people wrongly assume, or think, that Kerry Livgren played all that smokin’ Hammond in Kansas. Steve’s chops as an instrumentalist were overshadowed by his otherworldly voice. Rik Emmett of Triumph had a similar, but transposed conundrum: his incredible voice was overshadowed by his amazing guitar playing. They are two of the best singers and players in rock history!

This is an absolute stellar performance…so glad it was captured. It happens to be my favorite of these two songs, so raw yet so professional. It is rare indeed to find a band with this much talent. The original 6 just really "jelled" so well together. Steve on the Hammond…amazing, Dave layin' down some serious foundation, and Robby just rippin' it on the violin. Geez, these guys really knew how to put on a musical show. Thanks for sharing this gem!

Most likely Jeff Glixman (future producer & former band member) was doing their hair xcellent live mix for this show. Before Kansas got pigeonholed as just a Prog-Rock Christian band this O-6 lineup was a kick ass rock 'n roll band playing some unique original music and this little medley off their debut album proves it. I like hearing Robby singing and harmonizing with Walsh and Dave Hope's bass playing sounds like a third lead guitar.

Not to mention Steve Walsh's prowess on the congas. In Steve's book "When They Call Your Name"-an incredible series of fan & music industry anecdotes & fantastic interviews with Steve & one-of-a-kind photos-I believe it was Phil Ehart who stated, in awe, that Steve could sit down & tinker with any instrument & master it!
@crusheverything44492 жыл бұрын
@@bethleinicke9189 - Yup, I heard that, too. Jeff Glixman, a one-time member of a pre-fame version of the band, who became their live sound engineer and studio producer, said Steve was the best keyboard player he ever heard and also had the most immaculately perfect pitch of any singer he ever worked with. I still watch the Kirshner videos once in a while and just laugh at the otherworldly prowess of those six dudes from Topeka, especially Steve. I wish they featured his Hammond playing more on their records. It’s insane! As for his singing, Steve can hold his own against any vocalist of the rock era and his ability to hit you in the feels, as the kids say, puts him a notch or two above most.

The Memorial Coliseum. Tickets were 5 bucks each. Ted Nugent opened, then Kansas played. Aerosmith closed the show. I was about 10 feet from the stage, festival seating ruled the day back then. Kansas was amazing that night, no doubt about it.
