Just trying to keep things in perspective: During the 2022-2023 season, Iowa went to OT to beat Drake and lost to Kansas State, Connecticut, and NC State, all in their first nine games. Then late in the regular season, Maryland blew them out by 28. Yet Iowa was somehow able to come back to win the Big Ten tournament (beating Maryland in the semifinal) and to win five straight in the NCAA tournament (including the upset of South Carolina in the Final Four) before losing to LSU in the title game. LSU deserved to win that game as a result of shooting lights out, taking more three-point attempts than usual and making a percentage (65%) nearly twice as high it was for the season prior to the title game.

Warnock was a dependable three-point shooter who was excellent at spotting up where Clark could find her on a kick-out pass. Iowa's has had an overall shooting problem this season, not only with Clark's field goal percentage, but even more so with the long-range shooting by Marshall (5-20) and Martin (0-8). Despite their limitations, Goodman and O'Grady have actually been okay (64% FG, 14 points, 7 rebounds) "replacing" Czinano's numbers. Stuelke is getting better week by week. She is shooting better (78% FG) than I expected while scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

Every great player has an off night now and then. I watched the whole game with a couple of takeaways. When Clark came out of the game, the rest of the team absolutely stepped up and rose to the challenge. When Clark is in the game, the game plan is clearly to get her the ball at all costs. As a former D1 BB player, on those unfortunate nights when you are just off, you focus on defense, you focus on getting your teammates the ball, you move move move to get other players open, set picks, rebound whatever you have to do. You become the spark plug that fires everyone up. Kansas State was no match for Iowa, Iowa gave them the game through turnovers and outright terrible shot selection. The foul toward the end of the game when Iowa was up by 5 with the "and one" was a catastrophic mental mistake that cost them the momentum and the game. If Caitlin Clark is leading that team with fire and enthusiasm that foul never happens! She spent so much time pouting around the court because she wasn't hitting that she brought the entire team down. Great players CANNOT do that. Great players stay focused and on fire, because at the end of the day, it's not about YOU, it's about the TEAM. The Iowa TEAM was plenty good enough to destroy Kansas last night, but they have to believe it. The problem is, right now, they believe if CC isn't scoring them out of a hole, they are going to lose, and that's exactly what they did.

Yeah, Caitlin Clark could of did more to get her teammates involved. Gabby Marshall has been a no show in 3 of the four games. Kate Martin was another know show this game. The coach pointed out in the press conference how the post players were 58 percent from the field and they have to them more involved in the offense. Hanna S was 4 for 5 only got one shot in the secound half. They may see this team again next week in The Florida Gulf Coast classic.
