Thank you for your videos. My wife and I study Uechi Ryu in Florida, and the main reason why your videos are helpful to us (as very new beginners) is because there are basically no variations to the techniques. You could be teaching out of the dojo we attend and we would never know the difference. These are extremely helpful for practicing at home to prepare for class. Thank you again.

Greetings from Warsaw, Sensei. I have started Uechi Ryu this year (after practicing Fudokan for 5 years and Goju Ryu for 3 years). Last Monday my Sensei has explicated me Kanshiwa Kata and your video is for me really clear and helpful. Thank you.

I just want to add my thanks. I have started studying Uechi Ryu, after years of studying Goju Ryu and Jeet Kune Do and your videos are very helpful for those who for a variety of reasons have to study at home. Thank you Sensi.

Could you explain the difference between Goju-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu? Thank you in advance

@@jean4j_ - I am not a master in either form, but here is my opinion. Both forms are from Okinawa and are described as hard/soft karate, as with all the Okinawa forms, the two styles are founded and focused on self-defense, as opposed to sport/points karate. Goju Ryu can be traced back to Fujian White Crane and Nahante forms of karate and I find the hand techniques early on more practical for self-defense than Uechi-Ryu, with the open hand, thumb strikes and single knuckle strikes. I see more of a Kung Fu (Tiger, Dragon, Crane) influence in Uechi-Ryu, with the more circular movements, stances, and unusual strikes than Goju-Ryu. Uechi Ryu has 8 katas compared to Goju Ryu's 12, but the Sanchin Kata is the basic kata for both. If you were a Black Belt in either form,, you should be able to make the transition from one form to another without much difficulty, although I find myself sub-consciously returning to Goju-Ryu strikes more than I would like, when doing Uechi-Ryu katas. For self-defense, you can't go wrong with either form.

@@raymileur5729 Thanks for your answer. I more or less reached the same conclusion even though I've practiced neither for the moment (due to the pandemic), I'm personally 1st dan in Wado-Ryu-Ryu Karate. Maybe it's different where you live or in Okinawa, but after asking Okinawa style karate schools in Paris where I live. They have legit 9th dan sensei from Okinawa. Apparently, Uechi-Ryu schools seems to be more intense about conditioning et full-contact sparring while they don't practice full-contact sparring for Goju-Ryu. I'll go with Uechi-Ryu for the full contact reason mostly. Yeah I feel the standard stance of Uechi-Ryu and the open hands techniques are a bit weird for now. But maybe I'll understand their benefit later on. If you study JKD (like I did), you may have experience with finger jabs and the whole trapping thing anyway. PS: I think people should take more liberty with kata practice and it's totally okay to mix kata and take the best of each styles I'm sure you're familiar with the quote: "Absorb what is useful. Reject what is useless. Add what is essentially your own"

This is really good! I'm learning online right now, and while the system is reasonably easy to digest on my sensei's course, he doesn't go this much in depth about the kata and the subtleties in the moves. So thanks so much!! Hopefully I can get into an actual dojo once this covid stuff ends!!

Hey... :) I subscribed, and... Domo arigato.... :) I haven't been in a Dojo in, eh, 8 years...? I've been slacking lately, and decided to get back into Uechi-Ryu. :) Was a little rusty, so I needed help. :D I really appreciate this, you, and all you do.... Much Love from a I-forgot-what-Belt-Rank-I-was-at student from MN who now lives down south.... :) My dad studied Gojo-Ryu, a closely related off-shoot of, I think, Pan-Gai-Noon... He knew the Seiken Fist, the blocks, all of that stuff. :) When he died.... Somehow, he visited me, and Mom, before we even knew of his death that day..... He came to me in a dream, in some vast, white, flat... Realm? He said: "I love you son." in the same way I remembered, as I spent time with him shortly before he passed on... I lived with him from around 2005 to 2010, the year I graduated High School. As you might guess, he and my mom were divorced, and I was taken away from mom, to live with him... Ironic how both states I lived in each had a Dojo that taught Uechi-Ryu that I didn't know about until I found them, the one in MN I joined in around 2011. :D I missed mom terribly, until I came to live with her around late Summer, early Fall in 2010. I felt it was the right thing to do. I have Autism, so mom helps me out with stuff, and I work for myself as a Programmer and I also manage Operating Systems. :) If I had never been taken away to go live with dad, I might not have met my first Sensei, and wouldn't have learned Uechi-Ryu... Or, God's timing isn't our timing. I should remember that sometime. :) I'm also into Mysticism, and enjoy meditating and reading books and stuff. I have a book on Chayon-Ryu, I think it's called... Well, stay safe, and Karate is a life-long study. :) *Bows*... I'll share your video, ok? :) I think others would like to see your videos. :) Take care, Senpai, even though we don't know each other. :D It's out of respect, actually... See ya! :D

This guy does his kata differently from what i was taught. the circle block punch has always to me been a step forward, circle and punch. i guess its taught differently by different sensei.
