This is just good literacy, increasing your credibility. There’s a fancy word for it, but I can’t remember. Even if you’ve made up your mind, knowing the points of the other side is really important, and when you can argue them, it makes your point that much stronger. So good on you
@henry-yf2fl4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree that often we have to chose the lesser of two evils, and it is a shame that no third-parties can get any ground. One problem that I see is Democrats and Republicans being the only choice. On one hand, you can vote for whoever you want, and your vote represents who you think will lead the country better. But on the other hand the only people who could possible win are the dem and rep front-runners, and third party voters are pressured into voting for them because their vote won't matter unless they vote for someone who could win. Government is crazy, which is why I come to you (thanks!), keep up the good work.
@TBH_Inc4 жыл бұрын
Well because of the first past the post voting system, voting for a third party is almost as bad as voting for the party you don’t want to win. 2/3 of the country identifies as democrat or republican so it’s unrealistic for a third party candidate to win. And if they don’t win, they are sucking away votes from whoever their voters would’ve voted for if they weren’t running. For example, the Green Party and Democratic Party are somewhat similar, if the Green Party didn’t exist, their voters are most likely to vote for democrats. But by voting Green Party, that’s one less vote the GOP needs to win then they would’ve needed if there were 2 parties. And them needed 1 less vote to win is just like you giving them a vote.
@eomoran4 жыл бұрын
@@TBH_Inc the US' system is more complicated than first past the post. The reason the Dems and Reps win so much is because they are political machines which operate to get their person elected in as many states as possible. Third parties will never win if they don't have *that* behind them. If they had one which even solely targeted the states with just the lower EVs they could likely prevent a candidate getting 270 which means the vote goes to state delegations. Each state would get one vote and so long as you were either well enough liked by the state delegate their or they were a member of your party then you could feasibly get a plurality of the state delegates and become president. Until this is done it won't happen though

Coming from a person that has homophobic parents, it is HARD to change your opinion something you’ve been exposed to from a very young age. It’s easier to try to change the system and try to make sure that the future generations don’t have this influence apon them. And sometimes it’s an unconscious thing. Like back when I didn’t know that view was bad I unconsciously leaned away from books and movies that had same-sex couples and kissing. How I see it is that a person who has gone through the political system knows the system well enough to abuse it. A person from outside may be easier to manipulate by those surrounding him to carry out their own will. On a positive side, a person experienced in politics can spot and end an abuse of power and brings knowledge and past experience. A person who comes from outside the system can bring new ideas to the table, which can be essential for keeping a country afloat.

The thing you said about having different informative backgrounds, to put it into other words, is something I've been thinking about a lot for a while and it's been huge to me, to just realize that out ideas are absolutely influenced by not just the people we surround ourselves with and experiences we directly live but the information we've been exposed too. Which sounds obvious but really isn't, because we don't usually consider that opinions from others come from a different perspective, we tend to think they come from a lack of knowledge, which isn't always the case.
@acoelomate29844 жыл бұрын
You're totally right. I've been all over the political spectrum, and what people who've been on the same side their whole lives just don't know the experience, so it causes debate to be frustrating. For example, in my more conservative days, I was given all this information saying how Planned Parenthood only offers abortions, and how some conservative journalists called them asking about what services they offer and was refused any information about services unrelated to abortion. However, now I personally know someone who actually was able to receive care from them completely unrelated to abortion. It seems obvious that different people with different ideologies look at different media, but I think people really underestimate the extent to which that affects a persons ability to understand other perspectives

@xisumasays In terms of the voting under the preconception that all black people have to vote a certain way and how that is racist, isn’t that what Joe was doing before? I’ve seen that a lot from quotes like “you aren’t black if you don’t vote for Biden”; and it is also somewhat backed by certain citizens associated with the party-although not all are like that-but it gets to a certain point that shouldn’t everyone question that way of thinking it, as well as who is thinking that, no matter the person.

I think the main issue with a lot of elections and politics is we all have different conceptions on what is helpful and what risks are worth taking. Every bill, every action, will have some sort of a negative consequence somewhere and some sort of a positive consequence later. Since we all see things differently, no matter who’s in office, we find faults and grow irritable, claiming they didn’t do what they promised even of they did, just not in the way we expected. I’m trying to not name parties here and remain neutral to avoid triggering more conflict, but if someone wants to debate, I’d be happy to.

Three words to fix this problem. Ranked Choice Voting. It is vastly more democratic, and would give rise to third parties and different political ideologies. It works like this: Say there are four parties, Blue party, Red party, Green party, and Purple party. Let's say that the votes came in and Red party had 45%, Blue had 35%, Purple had 15%, and Green had 5%. In a normal voting system, Red party would win even though a majority of the population didn't vote for them. In Ranked Choice Voting, Green party would get eliminated, and their second choice on their ballot would receive their votes. Green party was closest to Blue party, so they gave their 5% to Blue party. The new standings are Red 45%, Blue 40%, and Purple 10%. Then, purple would get eliminated, and they were also closest to Blue Party. Then, Blue party would win with a majority of support. This would help fix people not voting for third parties because they don't want to spoil the vote, meaning that more platforms could become mainstream and the people could actually vote for who they want to vote for, with the winning party always having a majority of the vote.

Hi xisuma and chat :) I do not know all the details in the American political system. But i do know it is about the Democrates vs Republicans = block politics. We kind of have the same here in Denmark..... BUT we have many different political parties in the Danish parliament. Which is a mix on both side ...... right and left wing. There is 175 mandates in our parliament + 2 from Faroe Islands + 2 from Greenland = 179 total. Our Government is lead by the Soc. Democrates (48 mandates) and have to collab with other political parties to get 90 mantdates to get a law enforced. Which sometimes is very hard. But it's a way to collect and share different and small minorities opinions in a democracy. The Greek philosopher Platon once said...... "It should be the best, and not the most who should rule" ...... It can be very dangerous to follow that..... 'cause of the opportunity to get a dictator instead. It's all about the ballance of everything. :) But we still need to take care of our democracy in the future.... :) The Covid is trying to split people in a dangerous direction, but we have to be patient and do the best we can to come through this pandemic. Use our common sence when we moves outside our homes and protect our self and others. :)

From my own experiences, I would think you have it reversed. That is because we are both biased. Instead of perpetrating hate for the opposing side by claiming that only one side is open to new opinions, show your openness by showing compassion for people across the aisle. We are all human and it is simply not true that the "left" more than the "right" are not open to opposing perspectives. The only reason we think these ways is because we are confined to a closed-minded bubble. We are more similar than your realize.

@@ultanateferivo9117 Hang on, there is no "perpetrating hate" happening here. Raygun just expressed their opinion. You disagree. That's fine. Why start accusing them of hate?
@Raygun90004 жыл бұрын
@@ultanateferivo9117 where does hate come into this? My point though is that if you are rightwing you are dismissive of leftwing ideas. If you're leftwing you see rightwing ideas as taboo.

In my experience, the rightwing doesn't trust the left library because the right library told them not to.
@Raygun90004 жыл бұрын
@@acoelomate2984 thinking about it further, the right is just a definition meaning 'not left'. Perhaps it'd be better to be more specific as certain right leaning religious groups for instance may be insular where as right leaning libertarians are quite open. (There are also religious groups that are open as well). Hmm, what do you imagine when you think of right wing?
