Kanye West's 'Love Lockdown': The Lovely...Yet Distorted Masterpiece

Kanye West is not a stranger to incredible songs, and 'Love Lockdown' is no different. Ironically though, it's also...different. It's a love song in the perspective of the heartbreaker; and not necessarily the heartbroken. Kanye loves to talk about things that most people don't talk about, and this song delivers with that; but it also sonically delivers with a whirlwind of powerful contradicting instrumentation that influenced the music you hear today. This is why Kanye West is the only rapper compared to Michael Jackson.

A whole commentary analysis on Love Lockdown? How the hell did I not find this video earlier? 4:19 to 4:28 I think this is why I find the sound relaxing every time I listen to it to unwind from stress . I remember last year playing this song in my head on the train on my way to college to mentally prepare myself for the heavy workload. 4:28 to 4:40 Yes, that’s a great description! The 808 instrumentals gave me an image of someone who’s nervous and scared when I listened to it for the first time. The melody in this song is great! I was confused about the fact that the song felt like a long pre-chorus. But as I listened more, I loved it. 7:30 to 7:49 As soon as I heard the piano play, the song immediately caught my attention. The soothing yet intense feel I got from the piano was awesome! 7:55 to 8:08 Your description reminded me of “Amazing”, another track 808’s that was also impactful. Another anthem-esque song, but more on the hopeful side. 10:49 to 11:11 Another great detail! I remember someone in a reaction video of this song saying that the drums makes the song sound like one is about to go to war. And with the African tribe members in the music video, I think that was what Kanye was going for. Also, the “You lose…” part ALWAYS hits me hard. As someone who’s lost a lot when it comes to competition at life, I feel like Kanye is talking to me when he says this line. 13:36 to 14:32 Holy crap! I never noticed how genius that is. I initially thought that the song is about Kanye crushing on someone but is too scared to admit his love. But your interpretation knocked mine out of the park. 14:34 to 14:42 Same! The blended instrumentals were awesome! 15:25 to 15:54 My favourite part of the song: The ending! It sounds so intense, like you really *ARE* going into battle. Not to mention the ending where the instrumentals are deconstructed on by one in order. Overall, this was a great analysis. Thank you for making this! I wish I got to see this vid earlier!

First off, both a fantastic song as well as fantastic analysis of this song. It’s interesting because I always thought that the tribal sounds coming in at first felt very claustrophobic. As if you are the protagonist standing in the middle of an army closing in on you. And then I interpreted the howling as the protagonist having enough and bursting out of the walls suffocating them. Listening to this song is the best because it reminds you that love itself is contradicting. Love is the most beautiful thing on earth while simultaneously being the one of the most confusing things on earth. Love the videos and can’t wait to see more!! 💜🦋♥️

Fantastic points Alex! In a way the tribal sounds at the end sound like an army closing in on love, suffocating it, “locking it down.” Or it’s the opposite, just like you mentioned. Contradiction at its finest. ❤️🌹💜
