A quick video of a beautiful Bobwhite Quail singing. Notice he is occupying a slash pile (pile of dead trees and tree tops) while singing. Some people have suggested that I get rid of all slash piles. This is why I like to keep many slash piles around, a lot of small critters take up shelter in them.

Love this video! I’m in Tampa area and my dad taught me to call Quail when I was about 14 & I’m 70 now. Spring is great time to call as the roosters are searching out the hens. A buddy and I were bass fishing & I called and the rooster circled the boat. I couldn’t believe it! Good for you leaving those brush piles! This brought back some good memories!

That is awesome! Thanks. It's a shame though they are disappearing very fast from down here. I even added over 15 acres of new cover, I keep brush lines growing for miles of brushy edge cover, yet I have not seen or heard one now for a year or two. I fear they might be gone..

Thanks for this. Reminds me of summers in the hills and hollers of the SE Iowa countryside. :) At night we'd hear the whippoorwills. Two songs I rarely hear these days, alas, although we do have occasional quail at our bird feeder in the city, probably because there is a bird preserve not far away.

The female return call is just the last part of the males' two part (tone) call. As a kid, I used to sit for long periods and return the male's call and sometimes "entice" the females with the male's call. I'm 73 now, so that was many years ago. We don't hear (or see), quail like we used to... and that's a real pity.

I just had one come through my yard! I live in a subdivision with houses pretty close together and, unfortunately, I have cats. The little guy was lucky that I saw him before the cats got him. I picked up one cat that was after him and I chased the quail around the corner behind another house, but he came back around the side of my house. I put the two cats in the house and followed the quail to my back yard and walked behind him until he was down the hill behind another neighbors house and heading towards the wooded area, I hope. This is the first time I have ever seen one. I'm curious to know why he didn't fly away when he was chased? Could it be that he didn't have a branch to land on, as most of the trees here are very tall? Could it be that he wanted to live in the pile of tree limbs and wood that my neighbor has left behind his shed? Does anyone know how I can catch him? I own 30 acres out in the country and I would like to take him there.

Is there any danger or detrimental effects from slash piles in general? (I can only think of possible brush fire risk, personally) When I was a kid, occasionally we had small piles from pruning or tree fall due to storms (nothing so large) - but they always made good temporary shelter for various animals, and a source of some nesting materials for birds! I’ve never seen or heard any kind of quail in my area… (NY & VT border areas) so this is a treat. On my current busy road, I count myself lucky when visited by mated Cardinals 😊
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right, really the only risk is fire. But they do provide quite the nice palace for quail, birds, rabbits, snakes and other critters! Too bad you can't hear more of nature where you are at, but I understand! You'll never catch us ever moving back to another city.. Thanks have a good one
