The xenomorph itself may work in full light but similar to the shark from Jaws, Ridley Scott felt that they could never shake off the "man in a rubber suit" issue that hurt many horror films prior due to the limits of technology at the time. That's why they always had the Alien cast in shadow and barely gave the audience a clear full view shot of it. Working around this limitation payed off handsomely as it made for an engaging experience that allowed for the audience's own curiosity and fears to fill in the blanks.
@mou.28 жыл бұрын
Today's filmmakers should also be aware of the limitations of technology, instead of thinking that CGI is a magical tool that can do anything.

Correction: Dan didn't contact Giger because of the book "Necromicon" but rather through the contacts of Alejandro Jodorowsky, the director of El Topo. Both Dan and Giger were working on a cancelled Dune adaptation that had Jodorowsky conducting, and through that production the two became closer friends.

@pillsareyummy8 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by 'Lovecraftian sense'?
@commanderpanda93568 жыл бұрын
Same with the design of the ship. They went from Giger's very organic and alien looking interior, to generic metal-based design. It makes me wonder if Ridley Scott had any respect at all for Giger.
@pan38397 жыл бұрын
Commander Panda Wow! damn good question... something is definitely strange there. I can understand him going back in an attempt to avoid connecting his new work to anything after ALIEN, but that was redicules.

pillsareyummy Lovecraft was a writter that wrote Call of Cthulu the famous monster. I think that "lovecraftian sense" is having dark mystery of your characters unexplored thus making them outworldly or godly. Like a force of nature and not just an animal.

This is why I'm one of those rare individuals who prefers Alien to Aliens. Aliens basically made the aliens just dangerous giant bugs. Alien gave the alien a mystique that made it what it was; perfect organism.
@leokrupp44428 жыл бұрын
I liked Aliens it was well done, but I get what you're saying, it was that moment when people start "eff-ing" with something that was already good. Cameron was the one who first tweeked the creature design, I think just the head of the creature, and added the queen alien. The queen wasn't bad, but it was like you said making the über scary creature more associated with ants/bugs.

A lot of us prefer Alien, although Aliens was great. Personally I like all of the films in the franchise to a degree, but the first two just have a certain feel that the others can't match, and out of the two it's better accentuated in the first one.
@victorconway4445 жыл бұрын
Both movies were perfect for what they were. Alien was an artsy, purely horror sci-fi film. And Aliens was a sci fi action film with horror elements. But both movies were clearly very invested in the story and the material they were working with. Scott fully embraced Giger's work the moment he laid eyes on it. And James Cameron went quite out of his way to make sure the sequel could get the proper funding to happen. Not just for money, but because he legitimately wanted a good sequel that expands upon and fully utilizes the assets of the first movie, along with his own take on it. Cameron was behind Terminator as well, he's no stranger to sci fi horror. But he also did what he does best, an action movie.

Oh man, I wish you'd gone into the specific fears that the xenomorph dips into. I recently watched Children of the Corn and then looked up the background influences of the Alien movie.. CotC was awful by comparison. Useless, helpless "heroine," patronizing protagonist who saves the day while the women and children watch on, etc. etc. This came out in 1984. And then there's Alien. Badass, no-nonsense woman protagonist, an alien creature that prays on and inverts our primal fears of being "penetrated" and impregnated parasitically, the cold void of space... in 1979. Then I understood why this movie was so loved and vastly influential. It used and flipped so many tropes, tapped into such deep fears, and did it all so well.. Thanks for doing this video, this movie and creature design deserve it!

Design of the Alien is great. Its not some disease monster that people love to make (cause its so easy). Like i hated how the early Warhammer artists would make orcs appear horrifying by just painting their skin full of pus oozing pimples. Sure it makes them look horrifying. But its the same kind of horrifying as when you see a diseased rat. Its just lazy. When designing monsters or aliens, i would like designers to look at real animals and try to figure out what makes them look intimidating or scary. And not just try to figure how to use porridge and a bit of food coloring to make a monsters... Okay, im just sick of cancer monsters being the default type of monster that designers go to :(

You are one of like 4 youtube channels that I ACTUALLY look forward to when I see a new video. Your dissection and confirmation of topics and themes is beautiful and fun.

ANOTHER KAPTAINKRISTIAN VIDEO
@capdahat25988 жыл бұрын
Your videos are always so well edited and the way you present them, and yourself is honestly done well. The way you explain things is very... _smooth_ if that makes any sense. Anyways, I just wanted to say your videos are a joy for me to watch and I look forward to every one of them even if the subject matter doesn't entirely interest me. I'm excited to see what comes next.

Not related to this video exactly but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate that you link to the ambient background music in your videos. I watch way too many KZbin channels that don't do that.

You are the only channel on which I go the instant I see a new video. I love your work, the obvious joy and effort you put into it and the quality of the content. This channel is truly amazing, please keep it up.

Thank you for another amazing video. Alien has always been one of my favorite horror movies, with it's excellent blend of needing to escape and needing to fight back. Even before I knew the difference, the practical effects were astounding compared to the cgi of today. The facehugger looked like the kind of creature I could actually see, as if I could feel it from the images. I hope you do video around anime soon though. The symbolism in something like Tokyo Ghoul or Death Note just feels like its begging for someone like you to explore it. Just a recommendation though. Do your own thing, all your videos are great anyway.

OP you made an excellent video, a closer look at the artistic genius behind Geiger's otherworldly creature design that has never been topped on-screen before or since. For once I felt a deep-dive could actually have been several minutes longer than it is.
