I made a track with drums and bass for Nikolai Kapustins Toccatina op. 40 no. 3. It is so much fun playing it along with the CD. One of my favorites!

Groovy! The drum and bass allow for a slower tempo which really makes the jazziness stand out here.

This is the only Toccatina where I can actually follow the pulse all the way through! Kapustin's recording had parts where I lost the beat and couldn't convince my ears that the measure lines were where they were.
@ShaunakDesaiPiano
@ShaunakDesaiPiano 8 ай бұрын
Kapustin often writes like that on purpose. The drums give a different feel to it, allowing you to know where the measure lines are all the time, but Kapustin often makes measure lines unclear.

This is the only version I feel comfortable listening to the section after 1:20 into the peice. I think there is so much syncopation in this part I lose track of the beat when listening to other performances. Thanks for the upload.

Awesome!! Nice to hear someone with jazz instincts interpret Kapustin. Being crossover classical/jazz, for some reason seems to be inticing mainly the classical oriented so far. Nice to hear it pulled to the jazz side.

This is the best Toccatina ever! It's one of those compositions where everybody decides they're going to be the World's Speediest Speed Freak. "Watch how fast I can sound these notes" is not a legitimate style of interpretation. And everybody does that. I don't care to listen to that. I want to hear the music. In this performance, I can hear the music. I would listen to this video over and over, even without the clever drums and bass added.

Apart from the fact you made a great arrangement, I also want to notice your great techinique and a perfect feel of Kapustin's jazz-classics mixture. Keep it up, good sir, it is a rare occasion to see a musician that is not only technically good, but is also creative and actually thinks about what he is playing :)

This is awesome! The added bass and drums really helps give the piece some musical context to one that might just be starting to learn this piece or any other of Kapustin's pieces, which can often be difficult to interpret through those thick passages! It helps the learner to "see the wood through the trees" so to speak, so we can better grasp the mood and paint a better music picture with the notes. Thank you this!

I loved this performance when I first heard it about a year ago, but now that I am working on this piece myself I appreciate it even more. There is so much to enjoy in this performance....Perfect Tempo, Great Dynamics and Expressiveness. I love the bass and drum parts you wrote and even the camera shots are very exciting and add to the whole experience. Great job Stephan!.... and as far as Nikolai Kapustin being around to enjoy this, last I heard he is still very much alive!
