Finally somebody who understood how to really play Kapustin... coming from a Big Band background the composer would really approve this interpretation. Hopefully he will watch this one day. Brilliant musicians and camera work, too; this is how an ideal Jazz music video should be filmed. Fresh and modern.
@ethanfoss56014 жыл бұрын
Not so sure about that honestly. Kapustin's interpretation emphasized strict rhythmic adherence, but this performance takes many rhythmic liberties. Great performance regardless.
@Fanchen4 жыл бұрын
Kapustin actually regards himself more of a classical musician despite having jazz influence. Just shows you there's no one correct way to play a piece.

Jesus Christ guys, this is too good. Wonderfully played, mixed and directed (really, this stuff is pure cinema, never seen a jazz video at this qualitative range!). Kapustin is THE underrated composer of our era, the last piano technique master and revolutioner together with Ligeti. He is the last composer with which every pianist says "god, this score is written in such a brilliant way I didn't even suspect listening to the music". Sad that still a lot of academies (Switzerland too, I had personal experiences) laugh on you if you say that you play and love Kapustin. Basically they have never played him, that's the problem. If a pianist plays one of his pieces, he becomes addicted to that perfection of writing.

I'm listening to various recordings of the Ukrainian maestro Kapustin's music today after waking up to learn that Putin started invading Ukraine. In a way, it reminds me of the beauty of humanity while being reminded of the ugliest parts of human existence.
@ГеоргийМаслик2 жыл бұрын
Don't bring politics in here. Kapustin lived in Moscow and loved the USSR and Russia and became pianist and composer in Russian conservatory. And Russians love him and are proud of him. An attempt to tear his name away from Russian culture is devoid of common sense and is ideological in nature. He was born in Gorlovka, in the Donbass, this town was founded in 19 century by Russian government and became part of Ukraine only in the 20th century as part of the USSR. Gorlovka with whole Donbass in 2014 voted in a referendum to secede from Ukraine because of unacceptable modern Ukrainian doctrine and ideology for the peace-loving Donbass, the heir of the Russian Empire with the traditional way of life, peacefulness, love to Russia. By the way, Russia did not recognize that referendum and offered to remain as a part of Ukraine under the Minsk agreements, which Ukraine signed, but then treacherously rejected. These are facts, not opinions. I didn’t even imagine that I would write something like this under a video about Kapustin’s music .. Peace be with you and it's great that the music of the Soviet, Russian and Ukrainian musician supports you in this difficult time.
@DavidBerglund2 жыл бұрын
@@ГеоргийМаслик thanks for sharing those facts. I didn't try to bring in politics in my comment though. I think you read a lot into my comment that I didn't say. I never learned about Kapustins political views and I'm not interested. His music is just one very beautiful example of what humanity is capable of. Peace

I've had this in my piano rep for awhile now, won a state competition with it, and I always come back to this recording for interpretive inspiration. Very well done, I feel that Kapustin wrote this piece with a jazz vocabulary, but jazz was not his native language and I don't consider it jazz although it replicates it. Idk, I'm not a musicologist.
