The government pumps money into the tourist areas such as Havana. But once one steps outside of those areas they will see the real Cuba. Before you read this know that i was born in cuba and now live in the US. Most people in cuba have 1 good pair of shoes. Goodwill clothes that enter the island are then sold by the government to civilians. Most people in cuba cannot get the medicine they need( only the prescription and service are free), Most people in cuba cannot even afford a bicycle. Most people in cuba do not have the ability to travel out of the country for any reason. Most people in cuba wish they had actual elections. Most people in cuba walk the streets looking for food since there no markets like everywhere else in the world. Most people in cuba live knowing they have no rights and at any moment they can be jailed with no trial. There are no human rights, you cannot assemble or talk bad about the government. Dollars are not allowed to transit only the C.U.C which is the currency they use which has no value anywhere in the world, and which is traded 90c to a dollar. If you visit cuba to really get to know it. Travel outside the touristy areas so you see cuba's true colors . Communism likes to paint reality with the brush of falsehood!

I've been to Cuba and you are lying if you are talking about these days, the only period it was almost like that was during the "special period" when Americans tried to strangle the economy and Russians stopped helping. I've been all over Cuba, been several times, and studied Spanish in Santiago de Cuba nearly 20 years ago. Yes, Cuba is not a western-style democracy that part is true. However people are not afraid to speak out, and unlike in many other Latin countries labor union leaders, journalists don't get killed. Cuba has one of the highest human development index in Latin America according to the UN, which makes sense if you compare to DR, Haiti, Central American, etc. Their salaries are peanuts, ridiculous, I agree, but they get "raciones", every basic cost is free or nearly free. Medicines are available and very cheap, even for foreigners. I went to buy several times during my times in Cuba. With prescription, they are free, as in some European countries.

Great series... I absolutely loved Cuba... been there 3x to 3 totally different areas all with totally different vibes... Havana, Holguin, and Cayo Coco... All 3 are amazing... the people are the best thing about Cuba and the Food a close second! 2/3 times we rented vehicles, a car one trip and scooters another, and just went... never felt unsafe, always able to find great eats, and always were able to navigate as the locals were always willing to help you find your way. While on one trip we even ended up as guests at a wedding reception... it was fun... Amazing country, amazing people! I’d love to have he budget to go again... some day :)

It's so weird how these people talk about several of the same things but with smiles and excited voices like it's just a different kind of fun. There is a lot of critcism of Kara's and Nate's video about true state of Cuba. They have tried to be political in the past (for example about prostitution in Thailand) but there was huge backlash from viewership. Since then they have decided not to go into politics at all, focus on discovering beauty in all of the places, give optimistic narrative to the story, make their videos fun, entertaining and a possible guide for others willing to travel to the destination. I am sure they are aware of the problems but their channel is not really about showing problems around the world but finding positive in everything. I aldo think they are trying to learn about the world as much as possible so people in the comments critisizing the video help them understand the problem better but I think there is no need to call anyone "stupid girl" or "ignorant Americans". They are doing a lot to learn about the world, I am sure if you tell them about true situation, they will listen to arguments carefully. No need to be disrespectful. And I am really sorry to all those who have suffered and are still suffering. Let's have this discussion and someday maybe we will be able to fix these problems or try to do something about all of this.

As a person who is half Taiwanese half cuban with a mom who was born and raised in Cuba and then fled to Florida as a refugee, I have never and would never go to Cuba as a tourist or "fun" vacation. This is because I know that the tourist are seeing, experiencing, eating , buying things that the ppl who live and work in that country never will. Hi Nate and Kara I just finished watching your 2019 trip to Cuba and you were explaining the Cuban sandwich, that it’s a Cuban American invention. I’m a Cuban American that left the island in 1961 and the Cuban sandwich was a traditional sandwich before the revolution so they gave you the wrong information. It probably went out of the national gastronomic lexicon because they didn’t have the products to make the sandwich and it went out of fashion. But yes it is a very popular Cuban sandwich. I loved the videos, I left as a small child and have never returned.

Great video guys! My husband is from Cuba! Although he hasn't been back since he was very young we plan on taking our travels there as soon as we wrap up our New Zealand trip. Just a note, the religion associated with people wearing all white for the first year is Santeria (Lucumi), which is an Afro-Cuban religious practice that is aligned with Catholocism that has Yoruba roots in Africa, but it is not called Afro-Cuban. Also a note, the average monthly wage in Cuba is pretty low, keeping in mind that the Cuban people receive free education, and healthcare, as well as "rations" for food and living expenses are minimal compared to the states. They just live more simply than us and require less, although they could definitely benefit from higher wages, which is like you said, why so many do "side jobs" to make up for that deficit. In that light, although the $80-$100 per month is "low" compared to our experience in the United States, for the infrastructure it makes sense (also alot of skilled workers are exported where they make much better wages). With all that being said, the video was enjoyable and brought me back and did not help at all with calming my urge to return to beautiful Cuba. :) Also, GREAT visuals, the place is so saturated in vibrant color and culture and your video captured that really well.

Great job! I really enjoyed this recap of what you learned during your visit to Cuba. I know that it is very difficult (and risky) to generalize about a country that you have only visited for a few days, but your insights were very worthwhile to me and I am glad that you took the time to share them. Funny and Educational ... so glad you did the Food tour .. so many tripadvisories saying the food it terrible in Cuba but clearly they never left the resort that is feeding them on a shoestring budget .. As I explained this 80 $ is just for clothes, electronics, and amusement. Everything else is free or ridiculously cheap. (even entertainment, an ice cream in "la copelia" costs less then 2 dollarcent, taking the bus costs 2 dollarcent, a cocktail in a peso bar costs 5 dollarcent, etc.) etc.)

What is the UNEMPLOYMENT RATE?? And percentage of children attending school in Uniforms?? How can the population be "starving" when International UN Bodies praise Cuba for its health and food security?? Incomes are low because the basic costs of living are very low e.g accomodation. If the country is so bad then why does the US need to install ILLEGAL and gutless extraterrtorial sanctions which almost every country opposes?

one of the best informative Cuba vlogs on youtube.. most videos here just show the pretty stuff of Cuba... the typical cars, food, the drinks but dont tell you the in and outs of the city, the tourist traps, the way to get things, food to try and where to try and going away from tourist spots. that why you are unique and stand out among the many travel videos and vloggers out there.. being yourselves, sharing your experiences and helping people along the way what makes you special on youtube. (best advice on how not to bike through muddy roads if going to cigar tour :P )

You know, there is something to be said about "living in the moment". Last year, I was going through some really, really difficult times financially and could not afford my cell phone service. Literally everyone I met was shocked - and many were actually _annoyed-_ that I did not have a cell phone. I did miss having a cell, but there was something nice about being "unplugged". I got to really enjoy everything around me so much more, and as someone who grew up as a "Gen X'er", my childhood was before cell phones. It reminded me of the simplicity of being a kid again. I recommend everyone try putting their cell phone away for a while and really enjoying life around you. Even if it's unsustainable for the long haul, it's nice temporarily.

FireCracker3240, first off, congratulations! As a 2nd. year baby boomer (i.e., 1947), I notice often how uncontrollably plugged in the younger people are nowadays. I think some get up in the middle of the night and put their earbuds in before heading for the little boys'/girls' room. I hear some are to the point of actually being addicted, just like to drugs or alcohol. Unbelievable! I have a cell phone--a flip phone, and even that "bottom of the scale" thing is rarely with me. I have a computer, but it's a desktop. Stuff in my inbox can easily wait until I get home. In closing, I saw a sad/funny cartoon about a year, and it was titled "Visiting Grandma in the future". ALL of the relatives have their noses buried in their phones, and grandma has a confused look on her face, as if she's saying, "Why did you even bother coming?"

@@jimgreen3966 Yes, it's actually quite sad. I see it all the time. I'm a late Gen X'er. I once again have a cell phone, but I only use it sporadically. I also have only a desktop. I drive a bit of a distance to work every day, and often I feel like I'm the only one who is actively focused on the road. I put my cell phone in my purse and it stays there until I get to work, even if I hear it beeping from a notification alert. However, I look in my rear view mirror and I see the man in the car behind me taking SELFIES on his phone, while driving. Or there is the time when the girl pulling up behind me has both hands OFF the steering wheel while she's putting her hair in a bun. It's unbelievable, and frustrating, and there does not appear to be and end in sight. It's appalling, how little attention is paid to the world around us by generations below ours. My friends have a 6 year old and a 4½ year old, who were walking down the stairs with their faces glued to their iPads. Their father had to yell at them and take their devices away from them so they didn't fall down the stairs!! Also, I saw a video of someone taking the train ride around Disneyland and sitting beside him, clear as day, was a woman on cell phone the ENTIRE ride. Why would you go to Disney and stay on your phone the whole time? I just don't understand.

I was in Cuba from the 24th of January untill the 7th of February. Took some cigars home though, made some nice pictures as well. Was the 2nd time I was there. And after the 50th time Guantanamera.. you almost want to be deaf.

I was in Cuba for an entire month. It was a long, tough month and I was very happy when I left. I guess if you are vacationing there for about a week it can be tolerable and maybe a little fun. There was a toilet paper shortage when I was there and it was not fun. Funny how we take simple things for granted. Waiting in line for everything is the norm and after a while it can be exhausting. If for any reason I was stuck in Cuba and could not fly out....believe me I would make a raft with anything and try to get out.
