For English speakers, a full demonstration of the mechanism is at 16:30. Here’s a summary: The big red lever is the main power lever for the entire system. When it is pulled back, it winds the spring that powers the whole mechanism. At the same time, it pushes the three racks against their snails, sampling the time code from the hands. When it is released, it begins to power the movement through the orange gear towards the bottom. That orange gear is also the first rack, which begins striking the hour. When it reaches the end of its movement, a cam on the top of that gear engages the green gear just above it, which begins moving the green rack and striking the quarters. When that rack reaches the end of its movement, a pawl on it (which is usually held in place by a small pin near the red power lever) drops and engages the pink rack, which then begins to strike the minutes. And finally, once the pink rack reaches the end of its movement, the mechanism comes to a stop. Throughout the entire strike sequence, the yellow gear train powers a centrifugal brake, which uses friction to control the speed of the mechanism and prevent it from turning too fast. CORRECTION: The spring that powers the mechanism is actually mounted on the gear right next to the centrifugal brake (properly known as a governor). The red lever is actually the rack for the hour strike; the orange gear simply converts the movement of the rack into strikes of the bell.

This video gave me almost everything I wanted to know about Minute Repeaters, and I can't even understand anything being said >_> I do have one question though, for what looks like the small number of english-speaking commenters here, does anyone know what that purple piece introduced around the 12:00 mark is actually for? I can see that it blocks the green quarter rack from moving until the hour rack moves it (purple) out of the way, causing the quarter to snap backwards, but what does that actually accomplish? Is it there just to prevent the repeater from running without singing out the hours?

The purple piece has two purposes : firsly as you said, it blocks the quarter rack from moving unless complete activation of the red lever, and also moves the hammer trips out of the way. This purple piece is needed when the operator doesnt push the activation letter all the way in. If that were to happen, all the fingers in the mechanisms would not fully come in contact with their respective snails, therefore the wrong time would play. This piece basically forces the snail/finger contact to unlock the striking mechanism, if released early, the mainspring just releases its power slowly without triggering the hammers. It's a safety feature basically, therefore the name of the piece : "all or nothing"
