I watched this video with a growing sense of excitement, as I have been thinking a lot lately about having a watch, only to find that most modern watches are a bit ‘meh’ to my aesthetic sensibilities. Yes, there are some lovely, mostly older watches to be found, but to wear one is not exactly fair on the watch! But this watchmaker is different, some of his designs are really very beautiful, and for what they are, excellent value for money. If I ever am to wear a watch as part of who I am, it would be / will be - one of these. 🙏

Dismissing the man’s craft because of your predilection does both yourself and him a disservice. He is an artisan who is able to craft whimsical pieces because of the freedom these small quartz movements allow him. Plus he is able to keep his prices extremely reasonable, they all appear to be under $250 on his website! Besides Omega, Breitling, Tag, Cartier and others all use quartz too, there is nothing wrong with quartz and this is an ideal use case for it

Back several hundred years ago there were more complete watchmakers that truely made entire watch movements and precision cases entirely by hand. Each wheel and pivot was made by hand, and movement bridges had the holes layed out with precision. and created a mechanic movement and case made over a very long time. Cases made in silver and gold at times also. But these remind me of the old souvenir shop inexpensive trade pieces at a time when "Made in Japan" meant low quality goods made for export. Basically hand making a rudimentary brass case, distressing a factory made dial, and slapping a low end quartz movement into it. There is talent here sure, but "handmade watches" they are not. However, the leather watch strap was hand made and looks solid in construction. He should think about and spend some time working with sterling silver, and have a watch case, if put together with a much more impressive ETA jewelerd quartz movement, that would sell for much more! Considering the time wortking in either brass or silver should be similar, and silver is still fairly inexpensive (compared to gold), selling one like that every week or two could be your retirement fundbuilding down the line! 🙂 (and I've been a bench jeweler and diamond setter for over 50 years, so I know what time expended on projects can take!)

I'm interested in the appearance of your watches, but maybe some mechanical movement would be more attractive.
Watch fans are interested in the movement, case material, brand, and history. For ordinary people who consider watches to be a matter of fashion, it's all about whether the appearance is to their liking. Even if the movement is inexpensive, a quartz movement is sufficient as it doesn't break down easily and has better time accuracy than an expensive mechanical watch, and is also easier to use. It would be a big mistake to criticize the work of this store owner from a watch enthusiast's perspective.

@@ericouicestmoimeme most ordinary people really hate mechanical watch. they want a watch that can tell the time ...
@ericouicestmoimeme4 ай бұрын
@@Himgallery There are €15 watches for that. In the case of the watches in this video, people are looking for real added value, handmade, authetic. An automatic movement seems to me so much more in keeping with this concept. It could offer both versions! For me, putting a quartz movement in watches is like putting margarine instead of butter in a cake, putting a Renault Zoé electric motor in a Meserati, varnishing a Stradivarius with marine varnish, putting tap water in a Pétrus... There's something about it that breaks the magic.
@sibinesharul4 ай бұрын
@@ericouicestmoimeme A Seiko or a Miyota automatic movt wouldn't make the watch any more authentic as they aren't handmade either. Quartz movts are as much a part of horology as any mechanical movt. The only reason he is able to produce these watches with really unique designs is because of the existence of such movements. And not to mention keeping the price affordable despite being a handmade product.
@jimmyhuang74813 ай бұрын
@pentop9534 A lot of mechanical snobs will critique or dismiss the beautiful time pieces that are made. If mechanical movements are used, he would probably have to learn how to service them too given his dedication to his art and that just doesn't seem feasible as a one man shop. Seems like the owner wants his watches assessable to the average person and a quartz movement is perfect for that. At the end of the day, a watch is to tell time and I have yet to see a mechanical movement that is as precise, maintenance free and durable as a quartz movement. I am mesmerized by the beauty of a mechanical movement but I wouldn't let that detract from these beautiful pieces.
