I’m glad he was able to laugh it off, but just imagine what this man has gone through and that being the second time he had a problem with the police recorded on television. As a young Black gay man in my twenties when this season aired hell yeah I had a crush on Karamo. But I also admired him because he wasn't a stereotype. He came across like a regular young Black man that was also gay. Before he came along you didn't see much of that on tv, the movies nor anywhere else in entertainment. Whenever someone gay was shown back then and if the guy was Black typically it was a stereotype and he was usually the brunt of jokes. To this day I have much respect for Karamo simply because he was one of the first positive images of a Black gay man on tv. And what made it better was the fact that he wasn't some made up character played by a straight actor on a sitcom. Not only was he a real Black gay man he was also someone I and many others like myself could relate to.

I had just moved out of Philadelphia months before this aired, so when it aired in 2003, I watched because I was seriously homesick. I was happy to see my hometown on tv. I watch every episode. this was the only season of The Real World I ever watched.

I just re-watched the entire Real World Philadelphia season and... I have a entirely different view of Karamo now. It's like he went from one extreme to the other, in terms of how he presents himself then vs. now. I remember watching this season when it first came on and being excited that there was a gay black dude on tv that wasn't the "stereotypical" version of a gay person. In retrospect, it's clear that Karamo was lost and was trying to prove his masculinity and his blackness to show others that he wasn't a gay stereotype. He did the black guy that he "dated" dirty by blowing him off and being so shady. He was also a hypocrite for getting with a Puerto Rican dude but critiquing Shavonda for being in an interracial relationship. In the end, though, there was growth and it seemed to signal a period of him becoming more comfortable with his identities. I do wonder how he views his queerness, blackness, and masculinity now because, like his performance-like portrayal on the RW, at times it seems like he's now overplaying his queerness and mainstream/white folk appeal.
