I love the chemistry between Scarlett Johannson and Bill Murray in this movie. The scene when they share a cigarette is brilliantly done. The cigarette exchange has so much underlying intimacy. Movies should make viewers aware through translation, not by spelling out the words.

And his subtle, genuine reaction. His voice breaks, he's immediately overwhelmed in the moment of epiphany. Which turns into a confidence you can hear in his voice. Notice how strong it gets afterwards. In comparison he's almost mumbling the lyrics. I always sort of assumed he was sort of sad or becoming detached. He had just watched her sing and her and the others' interactions and became acutely aware of his and their age difference, in turn assuming his love would be the worst kind of love; unrequited. He is good with the ladies and knows that look when he sees it. He's giddy, as any human attracted to women would be if Scarlett looked at them like that.

I wonder what happens to the world in the exact time a lot of people feel the same provoqued by a movie. And how stupid would seem the one who is feeling differently. Movies and literature takes us and shows us feelings that we may never feel in our lives full of work at the day, but free at nights.

it's been about 15 years since this film came out and when it did I was like there's no way she could go for a guy that old or a guy that old could be that childish but after 15 years of growing up I realise that a guy never really matures much past the age of 20...and guys wiser and seemingly way more mature can be incredibly attractive...Bill Murray is fucking hot and I totally see why she was into him now. This scene was always my favourite though, too sweet.

@@yunase That's my point. The movie ends to the interpretation of the viewer. Those articles about what Bills character said to Scarletts Character are merely speculation. Whatever those inaudible words were they were comforting to her and whether that was the adulterous sounding "we will meet again" or the more graceful "I loved every moment we spent together" or similar then the viewer leaves the film feeling satisfied whatever they took from it

This is where he should have won the Oscar. That non-chalant drove thru the lyrics like a Tired and too old lounge singer begging for his shift to end looking at a pretty girl. You mean to tell me Sean Penn’s basic “My daughter aww noo” was more dramatic than this was? What Penn did was basic by the book. Nothing special. But this....you forgot it was Bill Murray and it was this tired guy in a strange place with strange people a way too young hot chick, drunk, misses his family. This was awesome. Never forgave The Academy for letting that happen.

Brass in pocket! This movie is so darling to me. I served Sofia at a restaurant I worked at before. Wanted to gush about how dreamy Lost in Translation was for me.

This is one of my 2 favorite movie scenes where ambivalent intimacy is shared through singing. The other is Kristen Stewart and Emile Hirsch singing "Angel from Montgomery" in "Into the Wild."

Age is irrelevant in relation to soul mates a soul can be old in a young body or young in an older one.

Two star cross'd lovers. I watch nothing but sci fi, fantasy and a few comedies. Without a doubt this is my favorite by a long shot. Aliens is my number 2 with The Matrix at 3. Just to get the idea of how amazing this movie is.

What unites these two is their simultaneous emergence into strange and unusual circumstances. Attention screenwriters!

I saw this movie first on a long distance flight, I was so taken by the story line, ageing guy gets within half a degree of separation from Scarlett that I watched it twice hoping he’d have learned from his earlier mistake, take every opportunity especially once you’re over 40, 50 or 60

Georgie Henley as Lucy Pevensie from Disney's The Chronicles Of Narnia once had a temporary tattoo of Scarlett singing in this scene on her left arm. 💐❤💙💜❤💙💜 I love her! ❄❤💚

The only movie I know where the soundtrack is more relevant to the story than the dialogue (and it's not a musical)

The following scene in the hallway as they stand side by side, the motif on the wall behind them slightly resembles a heart with cracks in it.
