@@karasuclips693 When you imagine an apple, you can see the apple. When I imagine an apple I barely see an outline - if I focus. I have a voice in the back of my head that I use to "imagine" things. Some people with aphantasia, instead of *seeing* things, have written text there instead. Others see slides. Each person has a different imagination, even those with aphantasia. Basically, its not actually about seeing things in your head, its actually about recording sensory data, about being able to recall those sensations. I can't see something unless it is there. I can't feel something unless I am there / touching it. I can't taste something unless it is on my tongue. Can only smell something if it is in the air. I can still think, though. Just have a different experience when doing so. I think I'm a 4 or 4.5 out of five on the scale though, so I'm a little different from others with it.

the best way i found to explain how i imagine things is if you layer an image over something else in some editing program and turn down its opacity until its nearly invisible, and also desaturate it a lot, that would be pretty close to how imagine stuff i feel like thats what 4 represents, with the outline? like i can imagine things, but its not like theyre vivid or anyrhing like people descibe; as if the opacity on that layer is on 100%. i wonder if thats an accurate representation of level 1 and level 4, if i am at level 4 anyway edit: that might be a 3 actually now that i think about it looking at the illustration in the vid

I think it's the same for me! I was literally just thinking about how it looks (in my mind's eye) like some parts of the image are blurry or faded or almost blotted out like with ink. If I try to focus on any specific details then they become clearer, but only at the expense of the rest of the picture. Like if I imagine someone's face all of their features are kind of faded and if I try to focus on remembering a specific feature -- for instance, let's say lip shape -- then it's like I literally zoom in on that one feature, so it becomes clear but the rest of their face is completely gone and if I try to overlay the detailed mouth onto the faded face then something else goes away (like the ears or nose) until eventually the whole thing fades back to the original, slightly-blurry-but-still-mostly-recognizable picture I started with. I think the best way for me to describe mine would be that it's like I'm looking at the picture without wearing glasses. Everything's blurry but you can basically still tell what it is, and if I squint hard enough certain things might come into focus.

>No imagination Bruh do you think we also can't dream? I'm typically a 5, but I can conjure brain images as if I was dreaming if I'm like deliriously sleepy and my mind is in a certain state. I normally just think in abstracts. When I think of an apple, my brain recalls the concept of an apple. I recall it's typical 3D and 2D shape, but can't actually see them; I recall it's smell, but can't actually smell it; I recall the feel and taste, but can't actually feel or taste it; I start to recall many other memories that are directly or tangentially related to the concept of an apple, as if the associated memories get pulled along for the ride as a less focused web of thoughts I can ignore or traverse. But I guess the better way to explain Aphantasia to people who can conjure brain images is to ask them "What do you mean you can't imagine the smell of colors and/or imagine the taste of musical melodies?"

That is honestly one of the biggest problems with talking about aphantasia, but the people in the call were using it correctly at least. Since it is a self-diagnosis use only, it is impossible to use it medically, but it can help a person a baseline idea to compare too.

I would say I am a 2 on this scale. I can rotate objects and see them vividly but textures are a bit hard to envision for me. Something I thought everyone had but turns out majority don't! 😭 I wish I could be truly head empty like everyone else 😔
@SethAbercromby
@SethAbercromby Жыл бұрын
As far as I've heard, the not having an inner monolog thing is a internet myth. Similar with aphantasia it seems the overwhelming majority of people have one to a degree. Not everyone can accurately imagine the voices of others, but that also goes for imagining more complex colors and textures.

Isn't there also a different thing regarding this too tho? Like when in a conversation someone says the word apple, do you immediately get the image of an apple in your head or do you have to consciously make the image appear. The people that do get the image are the same people that can't hear people talk about gross stuff (like poop or puke) while they're eating, since they image those things in their heads
@chronosclaimsall
@chronosclaimsall Жыл бұрын
I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm one of those people that has to consciously make an image appear and I still would rather people not talk about that stuff while I eat. Sure I don't see the image of it, but my brain still associates those things with unpleasant tastes/smells/sensations and I don't want it to associate those sensations with eating either. I'd still listen, but I'd rather be done eating or put my food down during the conversation so that my brain doesn't try to make me think my food is starting to smell a little funky or taste a little chunky because it's mixing the idea of "eating" with the idea of "bodily waste".

My dreams can sometimes have a shadow outline of a 2D scene if the dream was vivid, so is that a 3?? Or 4?? But when I’m awake, I’m absolutely a 5. The word is in my head, but an object? Where??
@animowany111

I generally don't have any visual experience in dreams, most of my dreams (at least those I can remember) involve the spatial sense, so I know what is where, and 'see' that way. I've had a handful of dreams and dreamlike states where I have experienced actual visual experiences/hallucinations/etc., and it's absolutely trippy. Like is that what people normally experience? Like when I'm so sleep deprived I'm seeing something that's not in front of me? What!? That seems crazy!

@Shadowsetp
@Shadowsetp Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the person. Usually I don’t dream (or at least even wake up remembering I’d dreamed at all) but in the times when I do it’s best explained as having sensations. Imagine being in a dark room, no light, but there are things around you people, voices, you can touch and feel things but you can’t see them at all. On the scale I’m a 5. Though when I was younger I was higher up then that (2 most likely) so that could also shape how that is for me.

No doubt Aphantasia exists, I don't understand how they go through life without being able to remember the face of a loved one without a picture for example, but I do believe they exist. However, I think there's a lot of semantics at play here. It's really hard to communicate the feeling of the "inner eye", I think when they hear "can you see the apple" a lot of people get the feeling that you're actually meant to hallucinate an apple in your visual field. And though some people are better at conceptualization than others, the power of imagination also fluctuates depending on how well your brain is doing, it takes some amount of effort and you can even practice. If you're a 5 in the chart you may be locked there for actual physical brain reasons (though aphantasia hasn't been scientifically proven to exist, and we don't know the mechanism by which it happens), but if you're a 4 there's nothing stopping you from going to a 1.

@turtlepope7802
@turtlepope7802 Жыл бұрын
@@dingusuhum you might need to work on your reading comprehension, because I clearly stated that I think it's real, and if you actually have aphantasia there's something missing there. I'm saying that it's a hard condition to study and even diagnose because it's so intrinsically subjective. If you're colorblind, you're prevented from having an experience, but non-colorblind people can't know if they're all perceiving the same colors the same (my red might look like your blue), just that they can see the full spectrum, because language can't communicate what a color looks like. And colorblindness is easily tested, aphantasia is purely self-reported. I have days where I'd say I'm "near-aphantasia", and people look like blurry shapes. I have days where I can render entire movies. Brains are weird.
