This is when Daniel finally humbled himself completely and never questioned his sensei again. The labor he did was a fair trade off plus it bulked him up a little bit and made him have good form. Myagi was 1000x the man that John Kreese was. They were both war veterans and both experts in martial arts but Myagi was the genuine article. The things he wanted to teach Daniel son were so much deeper than just fighting. Myagi was the kind of man that everyone should strive to be. I love the part where Daniel was feeling sorry for himself after the spaghetti incident but sees his sensei drunk and very vulnerable and emotional and learns that he lost a wife and son, but then tucks him in and bows at him before leaving. That scene warmed my heart.

Mr Miyagi is a genius. Made Daniel do countless chores but specific hand movements so he is actually teaching Daniel muscle memory with exhausting movements. Once your body learns it repeatedly, it becomes natural. Perfect.

Macchio acting as the shy/scared teenager is outstanding in this movie, I have seen no other actor before or since that so perfectly captured such empathy in a character. The casting overall from Cove, Morita and Shue was excellent, a truly classic movie.

Yeah he really was great, everyone was! And after watching this again as an adult you can see he's a complex hero, not by any means virtuous or pure. He really is a kid driven by anger, revenge, and emotion. You root for him in part because Johnny is such an over aggressor. But Miyagi takes on the father figure in such remarkable fashion that by the end of the film Daniel becomes a self-controlled and confident young man.

+Jack Ream If THAT blew your mind, imagine actual karate. When they first handed me a bo staff and told me to use one I said "How? I've never used one before, I've only done regular karate up until now". Turns out, the only difference between a weapon in your hand and normal karate is... that there's a weapon in your hand. The techniques, stances etc. are ALL the same as in regular hand-to-hand karate. It was such a trip realizing I already knew the basics of using weapons like a bo, sai, nunchuck and katana.

Game changing scene for me in movies right here. As a kid in the 80s this scene gave me chills and still does. Acting is this movie is so genuine, it cant and will never be recreated again. daniels naïve child like good nature sells the wax on scene....hes so confused....it felt genuine....he didn't realize he was learning karate and neither did audiences in 1984....there was no hints....it isn't as stupid as jacket on jacket off....I could buy Daniel waxing car painting fences and sanding floors cause that's part of their deal, he has to do chores for lessons..and he is upset that he wasted the whole day doing labor and learned nothing........who the hell would train putting a jacket on and off...at least the chores killed 2 birds with 1 stone...otherwise Jackie chan might as well just teach jaden right away and tell him from the start why he is doing the jacket stuff.......Daniel wasn't suppose to know that he was eing trained while doing the chores cause then he wouldn't learn the discipline it requires of hard work to learn the basic martial arts...he wouldn't paint the fence or wax the floor the same way...

There is ZERO magic like this in any movies nowadays. ZERO. This IS one of the most profound scenes in film history. It's film firing on all cylinders. Miyagi turned the impossible task of teaching a wimpy kid how to be a warrior in such a short amount of time, whilst keeping the thugs off his back and getting his home redone top to bottom...Miyagi turned the whole thing into a haiku. That moment when Daniel realizes he's been learning this whole time while he thought Miyagi was just taking advantage of him, he had his little closed mind blown wide open. HUMILITY. That's what it takes to be a real man, a real warrior. That learning is a lifelong journey, just shut up and let the master teach. No, you do not know everything. Miyagi never lifted a finger. He let Daniel figure it out by himself. Allowed him to suffer and achieve by himself. At that moment when Miyagi bowed and Danial bowed back, Daniel became a man. Miyagi teaches Daniel that winning is a life long process. It takes a lifetime of hard work and patience. Not just hate and brute force. That being a warrior really has nothing to do with war. Being a warrior first begins with controlling one's own self. Inside of all of us there is a war raging. Will we chose anger or love to win? That's what this scene is all about.

The scene is amazing. As a father it hits even harder. I get the feeling Myagi had the same exact interaction with his father. He knew Daniel would eventually run out of patience and frustration would get the better of him. He learned he could 100% trust Myagi and to never take things at face value.

I just watched the movie for the first time in years, and as an adult I was able to pick up on things easy to miss as a kid. Like how the special relationship between Miyagi and Daniel. We don't know what happened to Daniel's father, but we do find out that Miyagi lost his son and his wife to childbirth complications. That explains his generosity to Daniel and the fatherly way he took Daniel under his wing. Miyagi went into full Dad mode the way a good father would. Teaching, discipline, pouring his life into Daniel. It was a beautiful thing to watch, as a father myself, to see the balance of toughness and tenderness Miyagi brought to Daniel, and by the end of the film it turned an angry, out of control kid into a balanced young man. The movie is even more touching and powerful than I remember.

Indeed and Miyagi experienced growth from the situation too. Circumstance threw them together. The pain of losing his Wife and Son haunted Miyagi, yet through accepting to train Daniel he is able to experience what his own Father did by way of teaching him skills in Okinawa, and what he could have done with his own son given the chance. The layering makes this film so powerful and a lasting favourite.

I love Miyagi’s intensity and gravity in this scene, which he tries to impart to Daniel when he tells him always make eye contact, smacking him in the head to make sure he bows the right way, and practicing the right form for the various blocks. Takes what could be a corny scene of Daniel magically learning how to block punches just from doing repetitive painting and waxing motions and goes to the heart of the movie of finding balance, being a whole person in all aspects of your life, and showing respect for yourself and others.

This scene ALWAYS gets to me as it embodies the traditional values of these arts--my Sensei (John Anderson) always knew me better than I knew myself: Same as Miyagi and Daniel. One great minor detail is that in Okinawa kids are traditionally only taught karate from their fathers. Mr Miyagi lost his child, and Daniel lost his dad. So in many ways this is two people finding the father/son they had taken from them

Cobra Kai is WONDERFUL. It's a series that has nailed the characters but for all the people that hate Daniel, they need to come back and watch this and remember what he went through! Daniel's natural chemistry with his mentor was incredible and his POTENTIAL in Part Two was shown! I doubt Johnny could do the ice the way Daniel did!

I saw this in the movie theater when it first came out. I can remember hearing the audience saying things like “omg” and “wow” once we all realized the lesson that was being taught. A few applauses even. And at the end of the movie, everyone and I mean everyone stood up and gave the movie a standing ovation.
