These are fantastic videos, I cant express how thankful I am for these! My son (11 years) is starting his kumite training and there are hardly anyone teaching basic techniques online.

Che, The problem you described involving vastly different rules is maddening, In small rural venues, the rules are often set by the tournament director. Adhocracy is a fair descriptor. If you gave me the option of taking kids to a tournament or visiting the dentist, the latter would be my choice as it is less painful! Enjoyed your paper "bubble" as it is much more forgiving than a dojo's wall. Be well, Terry.

This is one of the many, many reasons we are no longer involved in tournament - between the shifting goal posts, the bureaucracy, the inflated egos and the pushy parents, tournaments feel like blood money. We don't miss them at all! (And at least in the dentist, one gets to lie down for a bit, at least.)

So many of us started in point karate (well, not me, but Ché for sure) and it has some valuable lessons! But the important thing is that the journey continues once the medals stop :) Thank you for always taking the time to watch and comment, Muzzey!

Haha, Sensei Che just described my personal experience fr decades ago, moving from Shitoryu to Shotokan... my pre Goju years.....yes Lol, not only must one hit the opponent, the form of the strike and post-strike were crucial to scoring a point. And hitting too hard in the head gets one disqualified. Gyaku-Tsuki unfortunately, became a favourite technique of the referees for many reasons, but TBH most times it's misapplied, people sinking into a long low stance, hitting with a Gyaku-Tsuki, hiki-te, kiai and then wait for the referee to declare "Yame"!!!!! to end the encounter, While their faces are right in the position for a knockout counter-strike. Used as a part of a combination of techniques it is a decent punch, but unfortunately often many people are concerned not to shift away or execute a follow-up technique after the Gyaku-Tsuki, for fear the referee would not award them the point so they froze there for a second, and bammm - something in me just couldn't help it and bamm into their heads, and lots of disqualifications later I gave up point fighting- then there were forays into the Kyokushin world where people fought without covering their heads just because the rules disallowed head-shots, but you know, when someone sticks their unprotected face before your fists in the heat of a fight ....the temptation to hit the head was too great.....Lol, I guess, rules are there to make matches safe, but a good sensei should never let the rules produce bad karate habits in his students.

The skills used in sport karate can absolutely transition to full contact bouts. Aghayev is the prime example

Definitely! What do you think of his matches in the Karate Combat arena? It's also great to see him earning better money than on the tournament circuit and showing the potential of karate on a new platform for us 🙇🏻♀️
