My Muay thai coach once told me an interesting story about Kyokishin fighters, the man who invented the style sent 3 of his fighters to face off against the thai's, 2 out of the 3 actually won (admittedly they were permitted to use elements of judo which helped them greatly in the clinch) point being Muay Thai practitioners should always hold respect for Kyokishin fighters for the punishment they can both dish out and as absorb.

Proper utilization of the side kick would have helped this Kyokushin fighter a lot. Didn't see him use it once. Instead, he implement the front push kick against a fighter who was better at using the front push kick and was unable to maintain spacing to time his head kicks because of it. The knee lift of front push kick and side kick can both be utilized to block roundhouse kicks, but a side kick can also hook the back of the knee against an opponent's front push kick and drive passed it if you aim the blade of the foot for the same side floater rib just above the hip of the opponent's kicking leg.

Yo Kyokushin. you seem to be knowledgeable on karate so I have a question. my Roots are in boxing, kung fu (heavy kickboxing influence) and wrestling. my dojo offers Judo and I'd love to learn it. but I'm not ready yet lol. once I achieve my next sash in kung fu I'll focus on boxing and judo. with that being said I'm almost 20. and I'm interested in karate (mainly Kenpo) but I have heard bad things about karate. my only personal pet peeve is their blocking system. from what I've seen it's force against force. In kung fu and boxing evasion and redirecting is more important. (Bob and Weave, slipping and parrying, for KF there's a focus on redirecting it away from the body while moving to make yourself a smaller target.) [example: straight right from openent while in southpaw stance like I am. basically i turn my torso so the punch slides by me just like the concept behind a slip, while using my arm to guide his strike into slip zone.] am I simply falling for Hollywood stereotyping or does Karate have a more (efficient and practical) form of defense and if so what style? (Kyokushin? Okinawa, kenpo?) example of what i mean by bad blocking it's trying to block a hook with a tense hard arm block using forearm and the bigger attack bulldozers through and crushes you.
@InGrindWeCrust20102 жыл бұрын
Did you ever decide? I'd find a Kyokushin dojo where they practice face punches. Or a kudo dojo. Your boxing and just and kung fu will all come in handy there. PS: I can't imagine being 24 again - so much time to train!!

Ofc muay thai is 100x better. Karate is more of an art. Muay thai boran was meant to kill people. Even when muay thai has rules its still more useable in mma/street fighting

@@Lu1zh1 and so was Karate, and Taekwondo, and Savate and who knows what other styles. Almost every style of Martial Art was designed to kill people. it's only the modern ones that aren't. Muay Thai is too basic to be called 100x better. there are only 9 moves in Muay Thai and anything else is just a variation of those 9. thats very predictable. Muay Thai is great but its not 100x better than karate

loopholes of kyokushin style: does not know how to clinch, not used to face punching, not utilizing the elbows and knees most of the time, does not know how to grapple and does not know how to defend from grapplers. the late sosai mas oyama should have incorporated the said techniques since he was also a judo black belter. still so much respect to kyokushin. osu
@neighborhoodgaijin26177 жыл бұрын
In the early days the fore mentioned techniques were allowed however people have work and lives outside of the martial arts, so the knockdown rules are implemented. however, many dojos still do all-round free sparring with gear on. My old dojo had this and we could use any technique we wanted as long as you didn't knock the other guy out. It just depends on what dojo you go to and cross training, but yes the knockdown rules are a double edged sword.

mastertroso he is a amateur. I worked hard for 7 years learning kyokushin and the way he is fighting is just disappointing. We do grapple on rare occasions but yes we do not utilize elbows. But that's because we are more focused on our deadly kicks and strikes.
@jervill16 жыл бұрын
There are face punching when gloved. Their knockdown rules are not the only way they spar. Clubs deep in to kyokushin tournaments tend not to do elbows and grappling. But I've also trained with a kyokushin guy in the early 90s (who is the source of what i think i know of kyokushin) who could defend take downs and grapple standing up in our judo and jj sessions. Ok, zero groundwork. His sweeps and shin to shin trips/kicks were no joke on the grapple. He knew hip throws, osoto gari/gake, de ashi barai and a type of hiza guruma which was what I would describe as a shin kick under the knee together with a shoulder tug. Brutal. He learnt these in his karate club and sparred enough with it to be able to use it. I can't imagine all kyokushin losing his type of techniques and training. I have to assume that different clubs focus on different aspects.

@yuowatcher7 жыл бұрын
transgirltalks Wow, karate has throwing techniques! Karateka can throw, and can escape grabs, that is true. But I never have seen any of what I would call Judo techniques in karate training. How could I miss them!? In my opinion, karate and judo are together covering most of the things one would need in hand combat, but each of them on its own is missing important thing the other one has.

I think the problem with kyokushin from a Muay Thai fighter perspective is the lack of different techniques like use of clinch and clinch take downs, knees, low kicks, and punches, the karate fighter was clearly completely thrown off everytime he entered clinch, still landed a massive kick, which is also a testimony to the Muay Thai fighters resilience, dude ate it like nothing, respect to both fighters.

@twistedpersonality2 жыл бұрын
Well, actually, if both guys were on the same skill level this fight would have looked a lot different. Kyokushin in general is a lot tankier then muay thai or even other branches of karate and if you compare power levels between the two then I would say that kyokushin is more on the explosive side and muay thai is more on the speedy side.
