Exactly, this is the true essence of karate-do, regardless of the style or school. Sadly nowadays it´s so sports-competition-oriented, that it´s way gone (at least for the masses). I understand though that the younger generations will always be drawn to recognition, medals, prizes, etc. and that´s why it´s been so popular for many decades until now.

@Li.Siyuan 4 жыл бұрын
@@orionofodyssey7271 It had no particular name and was taught to me by an English chap attached to the US Navy during the Korean War in the early fifties. He just called it Korean karate. It was a little like Hapkido inasmuch as it used a lot of crawling all over your opponent and beating the crap out of him. We practised a lot with makeshift rifles with bayonets and were bloody careful to make sure we did our blocks carefully and powerfully to avoid getting cut. This was, of course before the advent of the Health and Safety brigade. We used to get knocked out on average once a week but loved it because it toughened us up no end. Training was done under cold running water and knee deep at the local seaside. None of the soft Nancy-boy stuff you get nowadays. We learned kiai jutsu, batto-jutsu and various resuscitation techniques from blue belt upwards and had great fun doing it. I've been to other classes and styles since but mostly been disappointed; once I was matched against a brown belt but he was constantly complaining that my blocks were hurting his arms. For pity's sakes, what did he expect? Our blocks were meant to break arms and legs when applied correctly with full force! Oh well, that was over 50 years ago now...

Goju is not a joke. Never has been. The physical conditioning alone will end 90% of encounters before they begin. I started when I was 4. Being a goal tender in Lacrosse was a brilliant supplement to my kite. Took a Gold medal in that at the AAU Jr. Olympics. Sanchin is very real, very healthy and very effective. I can’t tell you how many much larger dudes have tried to just Move my 5’7” body and simply failed to do so. It gives me the opportunity to be polite before enforcing deterrence, which I’ve seldom had to do. On those unfortunate occasions where I had to do something it was over in flash and hopefully they have chosen better paths in life. 🍻

This, is for stopping very serious problems. You can do similar with MT, but before your kick hits our liver (which, with enough Sanchin will not have anywhere near the effect it usually does) we can just pull out your eyes, or trap the leg the rip off the toes. You know that high level kickboxers and MMA fighters can spank people to the death in a few seconds, right? Man, BJJ guys and Wrestlers can choke someone to death and break bones easily. Karate Kumite became a point fight game, but been lethal in unarmed combat is not a problem if you really want, and I don't think that the Japanese/Chinese traditionalism is really necessarily for this.

The physical conditioning and drilling are good supplemental exercises but they really need to be training the techniques in full contact okinawan style bogu kumite to actually experience fighting against an opponent going full speed and not pulling their attacks for safety. @DD123 you learn to fight by actually practicing to fight. Which means free sparring. Breaking boards and mechanical exercises are supplemental training methods. By themselves they will not teach you to fight. You perform how you practice. There is no magical transformation from punching a makiwara, breaking boards,bricks and bottles etc , or a punching bag and fighting a living, moving person who's fighting back. You must practice fighting a noncompliant opponent in practice in order to be able to do it in real life situation against someone physically assaulting you.

A huge problem. Sue crazy culture. But you can filter the masses and pull the real ones aside. They do the same during recruit training, or used to. Some day a strange NCO would appear and ask if anyone was interested in special training, no more. Those that really were had been informed by their recruiter because we asked well before signing up. If you sounded off they'd pull you later. Most everybody shut up and tried to disappear as they were clueless.

Notice the emphasis on physical development. Also notice the lack of 5 and 10 year old black belts.

Classic Karate was legit, unfortunately very few clubs still train this way, sports karate has damaged this once hard-core martial art beyond recognition.

@Proud Indian I agree totally, I am lucky that our club still tries to train (as close as possible!) to the original methods, needless to say we are a very small club, new staters tend to go elsewhere, a shame as I am privileged to train with a truly world class instructor and excellent senior grades!

Nice. We had harder training than the video that too in 90s. Shito ryu was once at its peak, amazing espc with south masters.misses knuckle pushpus, hot sand fingers, full contact practice.... i nowdays see brown belts n black belts with improper kicks n stances. Even endurance for fights is too less. At our time even at district level compt. A gold means atleat winning 7-8 x 3 minute fights with equally good opponents as chart progresses. Unlike todays....

True martial arts were strong as hell. Not the joke we have today. People see it nowadays as leisure and something to do for fun.

Training is not supposed to be fun. I was always tired and sore as hell. Could barely get out of bed the next day.

@@gladius2489 If it's not fun you're doing it wrong. I totally agree, afterwards, tired and sore as hell, but 'pumped', ready to go and happy as a pig in xxxt really, really high on life and feeling good with what I'd just done/put myself through. Is there a little bit of masochism in martial arts, sure, you have to love the pain, as Arnie said so many years ago "no pain, no gain".

I do not mean this in a negative way ( more of a observation) but it seems like there is more emphasis put on "crisp movement" today then in the past. in other words, more fighting and power back then, while fluidity and movement today.

Yeh very true, back then karate was more focused on being realistic shall we say in terms of self defense and physical strength. Used to be you would train to beat an opponent in combat/self defense, now its more focused on stupid things like sport karate and points fighting... if your interested in this type of karate then you should seriously check out Iain Abernethy on KZbin.
