Exactly, this is the true essence of karate-do, regardless of the style or school. Sadly nowadays it´s so sports-competition-oriented, that it´s way gone (at least for the masses). I understand though that the younger generations will always be drawn to recognition, medals, prizes, etc. and that´s why it´s been so popular for many decades until now.

Interesting, what Karate style are you practising?
@Li.Siyuan5 жыл бұрын
@@orionofodyssey7271 It had no particular name and was taught to me by an English chap attached to the US Navy during the Korean War in the early fifties. He just called it Korean karate. It was a little like Hapkido inasmuch as it used a lot of crawling all over your opponent and beating the crap out of him. We practised a lot with makeshift rifles with bayonets and were bloody careful to make sure we did our blocks carefully and powerfully to avoid getting cut. This was, of course before the advent of the Health and Safety brigade. We used to get knocked out on average once a week but loved it because it toughened us up no end. Training was done under cold running water and knee deep at the local seaside. None of the soft Nancy-boy stuff you get nowadays. We learned kiai jutsu, batto-jutsu and various resuscitation techniques from blue belt upwards and had great fun doing it. I've been to other classes and styles since but mostly been disappointed; once I was matched against a brown belt but he was constantly complaining that my blocks were hurting his arms. For pity's sakes, what did he expect? Our blocks were meant to break arms and legs when applied correctly with full force! Oh well, that was over 50 years ago now...

Goju is not a joke. Never has been. The physical conditioning alone will end 90% of encounters before they begin. I started when I was 4. Being a goal tender in Lacrosse was a brilliant supplement to my kite. Took a Gold medal in that at the AAU Jr. Olympics. Sanchin is very real, very healthy and very effective. I can’t tell you how many much larger dudes have tried to just Move my 5’7” body and simply failed to do so. It gives me the opportunity to be polite before enforcing deterrence, which I’ve seldom had to do. On those unfortunate occasions where I had to do something it was over in flash and hopefully they have chosen better paths in life. 🍻

@shooter74265 жыл бұрын
@DD123 you learn to fight by actually practicing to fight. Which means free sparring. Breaking boards and mechanical exercises are supplemental training methods. By themselves they will not teach you to fight. You perform how you practice. There is no magical transformation from punching a makiwara, breaking boards,bricks and bottles etc , or a punching bag and fighting a living, moving person who's fighting back. You must practice fighting a noncompliant opponent in practice in order to be able to do it in real life situation against someone physically assaulting you.

Karate originally found for street fighting at its time. But when it came to America it's watered down

It’s so sad what the art has become these days. Today I was teaching a class at the dojo and after doing some pad work (mixed with some boxing combinations) one of the students threw a tantrum because “you couldn’t score” with these techniques in a tournament!. Poor kid when she has to face a real fight and defend herself. She will have an instant awakening 😞

Ojalá Funakoshi hubiera cumplido su visión del karate como un estilo de vida marcial y no el deporte vacío que es ahora.
