I studied martial arts in the 1960s. This film brings back great memories of Karate as practiced then. Thank you.

You studied it? What you brought a calculator in the dojo ya bish?
@arnoldcohen12504 күн бұрын
@@Cholesterol-w1j Don't you understand the full meaning of "study"? In the early 60's dojos were not on every street corner in the US. I had to travel quite a distance to first practice Judo and then Aikido. Going away to college I had to switch to Karate as that was only what was available in that small town and on campus. At all of those places, I encountered only people interested in "studying" and "practicing" their art. They were respectful of each other and eager to learn. Reading your comment, I guess that has changed also.

He is likely one of the most important figures in Karate for self-defense. To this day most so called Karate defense videos are practiced in GIs and/or focus too much on Karate vs. Karate. The only two Karate books I kept in my collection is his Practical Karate I and II.

Oh, Yes, Those were the days, .... The days of pure techniquessss, aaplications and brisk reactions. Many thanks for the original footage and leaving me just wordless on that perfection. I myself have bought several books of Shihan Nakayama. My best honour to him, may he rest in Peace, along with the late Master Enoeda. A beautiful piece of art to their memory and their followers. Many thanks, Paul,68, retired instructor of Karate,

This shows how much they cleaned up the older Okinawan , down and dirty techniques. No groin kicks, testicle grabbing, eye gouging or head butts. The" one hit one kill " ethos of Budo was dominant.

While this vid may seem old fashioned, we should remember that it was made in a totally different time. Where a good elbow to the stomach or side kick to the tummy could discourage many would be nasties. Not like nowadays when many baddies will have watched uft and can evade or counter basic self defence. That said this vid is delightful and must have inspired many beginners who went on to do great training.❤😊❤

@antoniostrina8216 күн бұрын
I think that Nakayama is applying sports karate in a real life situation and it fails. The only purpose of this documentary was to make Nakayama money.
Knife took away then counter strike; the techniques here are very similar to tang so do system ; I suspect sensi itso of okwinia te system passed them down to gm hwang ke.

@@burntrim it’s actually a great analogy there’s a reason why even in the early days of combat sports organizations like ufc there weren’t and still aren’t any shotokan fighter champions and it’s so useless none of them even bother train in it if it was effective they would
@sashakhan126210 ай бұрын
@@tammykennedy4165isn’t American kickboxing based on Shotokan+boxing tho? So if they want to use the MMA-useful parts of it they just train in kickboxing. I have no bias as I only did karate from 4-7 and the only martial Arts ive used in self defence were Shinto Ryu Jujutsu and (in terms of de-escalation) Force Necessary.
The only problem with this otherwise excellent film is that it is too un-realistic: Japan has such an abysmally low crime rate that none of these situations have a significant chance of taking place in Japan. 😆 Of course, the rest of the world can learn a lot of self-defence from this film to handle situations in their own countries. 😐
