It's the first time I watch a Kenpo Karate form, so this was too new for me. I was surprised by how many movements there was in each form. As a Taekwondo practitioner I'm used to quite shorter forms (Taekwondo forms are shorter than typical Karate forms), so we spend most of the time repeating few movements in order to really master them. I imagine that a new student will need a lot of time to memorize these forms. But as you say, these forms seem to allow the practitioner to develop a tremendous fluidity and a sensation of continuity between movements, since they are so fast paced one after another. I agree, the last one seemed to be the most advanced practitioner, his movements had "more definition", I would say, there was a bit of a snap in each attack. I was also surprised that he looked down in some movements. Maybe he was simulating a grappling, or maybe it's for face protection, I don't know really. The beginning of the form reminds me of a Chinese style, I've seen a similar beginning in Hung Gar. Thanks for the video!

American Kenpo started in Hawaii as a mix of southern Chinese kung fu, Okinawan Karate, and Danzan Ryu Jujitsu - so depending on the branch, you'll see them either lean more into their Okinawan/Japanese heritage, lean more into their Chinese heritage, or try to balance both.

Actually you may find that Ed Parker's American Kenpo Karate is not actually a style of Karate. It's name refers to its roots Kenpo for Chinese martial arts and Karate for Japanese, that is to show the origins of the style and its hybrid nature. But it's its own thing. You may also find some sources that claims that the the reason is called Kenpo Karate was to sell, because back in the day everything martial arts related was just Karate.

1:10 @KarateDojoWaku he jumps because of the technique that is part of the Kata. It is called Wings of Silk and you can see videos of that one here on KZbin. 1:31 The kick on this Kata targets the knee. 2:24 he is announcing the form. He showed his five extended fingers saying he's going to perform Long Form 5. 3:00 American Kenpo was heavily influenced by Chinese styles such as Wing Chun, Hung Gar and Choy Lee Fat very recently. 3:21 American Kenpo Katas have a theme, this one is... take downs :D 3:47 Same Kampo style, different Lineage. That is Juan Serrano and I'm going to show him your video. 4:41 That is the Kenpo salutation, is a mixture between the Kosho Ryu Kenpo and Hung Gar salutations. It goes at the beginning and the end of a Kata. 5:39 It is actually the second Kata, so you're right, it is for beginners. 6:02 The salutation is kind of sign language message. There are plenty of videos explaining it on KZbin. 6:53 As far as I know, he shouldn't look down.

Nick Cerio was a legend and a dear man!! I actually found out only recently that Cerio's Kenpo is an amalgamation of his own creation (or rather incorporation of various arts) and Karazenpo Go Shinjitsu, the system Prof Cerio earned his 1st Black Belt in. I am officially of the same lineage having studied in United Studios' Kenpo for years. United Studios is a redacted version of Nick Cerio's Kenpo yet incorporates much of the Karazenpo system. Cerio's Pinans come from Kyokushin and the Kata, Stature of the Crane and the Defensive Manuevers are directly from Karazenpo Go Shinjitsu- a system that traces back to Sonny Gascon.

I love the fact that you took time to watch and analyze American Kenpo Karate. Getting input from an expert in Shotokan is super valuable to us, Kenpo Nerds and Practitioners. It looks like all 3 videos practice the same version of American Kenpo, although there are different sub-versions of the art with minor differences between them. Parker's original students branched out and taught Parker's Kenpo but with their personal edits and add-ons. I'm fascinated that you immediately noted the Chinese influence in these forms (particularly the first two videos). The third video, you correctly noted is for beginners. Long Form 1 is a little more leveled up depending on the school one studies at. Parker made it a point to incorporate circular movements along with the linear and rigid Japanese Karate movements. Kenpo in Parker's words (you can actually watch a KZbin video-- Kenpo in Ed Parker's own words) is the combination of circular and linear techniques. He noted that it is necessary for a Martial System to use Linear and Circular moves to make it more complete; having just one or the other is too limiting for the practitioner. Keep in mind, Parker's end-game or goal was to create a robust and "full-bodied" (my words) system for personal self-defense. Ultimately he wanted to have practical and wide-ranging movements for the best repertoire of self-defense relevant to attacks found in modern American streets. The ritual hand movements you noted at the beginning and end of the forms are pretty much as you say, ritualistic. There are three basic gestures: the mountain (pyramid shaped hands), the praying hands and the left open hand over right closed fist. The mountain represents ascent and growth, the praying hands represent that there's no intent to do harm, and the hand over fist is the buried treasure-- Kenpo is one's treasure and meant to be hidden or closed until ultimately necessary. These three gestures come from James Mitose (or perhaps deep in his family's lineage). James Mitose was a Japanese-American born in Hawaii but with family rooted in mainland Japan (might be Shikoku, actually). As far as I know, the hand symbols derive from James Mitose and you can see these symbolized in the Mitose Crest utilized in his Kenpo, Kosho Ryu Kenpo. Parker is honoring his lineage to James Mitose although most of his influence comes from William Chow, one of Mitose's top students who, in-turn became Parker's Kenpo Teacher. Chow, being a Chinese American and Hawaiian is the one responsible for bringing in the Chinese influence into Kenpo and was well-versed in Chinese Kung Fu (Hung Gar comes to mind). It's interesting how you watch the feet, this to me says that you are a seasoned Martial Artist and Teacher and shows wisdom in your conveyance of Karate. American Kenpo uses a "toe-heel" alignment and is different than your traditional Shotokan front stances. This toe-heel alignment might have also been what influenced Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, Bai Jong stance utilizing essentially the same foot placement except JKD likes to have the back-foot situated on the ball of the foot, heel-up as for a preparation to lunge at one's assailant, to get a quick spring in its principles and methods of self-defense. Personally, I think your Karate system is beautiful and your Katas are more interesting. The intermittent stoppages conveys a dramatic element, but I don't really know for sure why you do those; please explain the pauses in your Kata. Kenpo's "katas" or forms are essentially chain-linked self-defense techniques done with flow and continuity. They are meant to be explosive yet with continuous flow. Parker called his Kenpo- a Science of Movement or the Logic of Motion. It's an art that plays with motion and loves to experiment with motion- its possibilities and the self-awareness of knowing how to master the physics of your own body. This is a lot, I know. Once I saw your video, I couldn't contain myself ; )

Ed Parker described motion in reference to phases like water: solid, liquid and gaseous. Solid motion is strong and staccato. Liquid motion is fluid where motion continues. Gaseous motion involves techniques where three limbs strike at once. So, you see jumping style motions in sweeps where the upper and lower body strikes at the same time.

In American Kenpo we do the Kenpo salute at the beginning and end of each form, and before that we use fingers to indicate which form we're doing (long form 4, for example, as one of the practitioners performed in one of the videos you watched.) Kenpo Forms, particularly the long forms, are a collection of Kenpo Self Defense techniques organized by theme and performed twice, once on each side (Standard/orthodox and southpaw). Part of the philosophy of the system is that anything you can do on your natural side you should be able to do the opposite way as well.

Sahagun’s form is very nice. And yes, Long 1 is the second form you learn after Short 1. They are the beginner forms but also the most important as you’re learning your stances and proper body rotation and synchronization between the upper and lower body. The salute in Kenpo replaces the bow. Master Parker didn’t believe in bowing to people, but still wanted a way to show respect. His books are very interesting.
@jamesdeaton3559
@jamesdeaton3559 3 жыл бұрын
The first kata learned in Kenpo is Short One, for beginners, it emphasizes blocking and retreating. The Long One that you observed is the beginning of returning strikes. Short Two kata is block followed by a strike, cat stance on all transitions, emphasis on contraction and expansion. The Long Two kata shows more of a pivot in the transitions, while maintaining a wide base. The openings in Kenpo are partially related to the rooting and settling that you see in Tai Chi. The kata that you thought was showing takedowns was exactly that, Long Five kata is takedowns and options to attack a downed opponent. Many of the longer katas will preview the techniques to be performed by the various hand movements. The part where the hand covers the fist, advances forward, and then pulls back is a bit of a Chinese gang symbol. It says by the movements, "The warrior(fist) and the scholar(open hand), go forth to fight and to pull the country together. Then the forming of the triangle and prayer attitude of the hands symbolizes " We hide our treasure, which is Kenpo, and ask forgiveness should we ever have to use it". A lot of symbolism.

Parker Changed from deep stances which he felt slowed and limited mobility. He was a street fighter as most in Hawaii at the time. As is indicated by One of the Emperados being stabbed to death. This changed their thought as far as looking directly as opposed to moving toward the next attack. Influence highly by the Filipinos who worked in the Panama province along with Okinawa and Japanese. Filipino Kuntao and Kali are knife systems and gear their movements upon the knife fighting.

After teaching in town for a while I developed a friendship with a few of the kenpo black belts. here is what I can tell you. 1. Largely influenced by Chinese martial arts. 2. That ridiculously long salutation bowing in or out has an insane amount of symbolism. 3. Kenpo Karate William Kwai Sun Chow (July 3, 1914 - September 21, 1987, AKA William Ah Sun Chow Hoon) was instrumental in the development of martial arts in the United States, specifically the family of styles referred to as Kenpo/Kempo. In 1944 Chow began teaching what he called “Kenpo Karate” at the Nuuanu YMCA in Honolulu. As Mitose had referred to his art as "Kenpo jujitsu," rather than "Kenpo karate," this was a departure for Chow. His many students included Edmund Parker, Joseph D. and Adriano D. Emperado, Ron Alo, Anthony S.Agisa,[5] Abe KAMAHOAHOA, Bobby Lowe, Ralph Castro, Sam Kuoha, Matias Ulangca Jr, Bill Chun Sr., John Leone, William G. (Billy) Marciarelli (Kachi/Kenpo), Walter Liu, and Paul Pung. He did not create or perform any kata but focused more on individual techniques.[6] Spread of Kenpo Karate William Chow's legacy grew as Kenpo spread to the United States mainland with its introduction by Edmund Parker and other students of Chow such as Ralph Castro (Shaolin Kenpo), Adriano Emperado (Kajukenbo, Karazenpo go shinjutsu), and later from George Pesare, founder of the East Coast branch of Karazenpo/Kempo, and his student Nick Cerio, who were instrumental in bringing Kenpo to students in the eastern United States. Additional students such as Anthony S. Agisa co-founder of ( Goghin Kenpo Ka Ju ), Tony Agisa, Carmelo Romano, and Ron Alo who was one of the first practitioners to bring Kara-Ho Kempo to the mainland, where he taught Chow's art in Southern California before developing his own Alo Kenpo system. [7] Warrior ethos In spite of his heavy influence on the martial arts in the United States and his many notable students, Chow never had a dojo of his own, often teaching in the park[8], and is thought to have lived in near poverty much of the time. Cerio once stated, "He was a very cautious individual who had no business sense whatsoever."[9] Chow referred to his style as a “War Art” and focused largely on techniques that he felt worked in the streets.

This style of Kenpo Karate was created by Ed Parker. But there are various other styles of Kenpo. I have trained in both Nick Cerio’s Kenpo Karate and Shaolin Kempo Karate. As fas as the origins of Kenpo, it started with a man name James Mitose. He brought Kosho Ryu Kempo Karate from Okinawa to Hawaii. Then he taught William Chow who created Karaho Kenpo. Chow was one of Professor Nick Cerio’s teachers. And Nick Cerio taught Grand master Fred Villari who created Shaolin Kempo Karate. It was Professor Chow who introduced the Kung Fu aspect of Kenpo. He taught notable masters such as Nick Cerio, Ed Parker, and Adriano Emperado. Feel free to message me if you want to know more about Kenpo Karate and other martial arts.

ED Parker's Kenpo, later referred to as American Kenpo, evolved over time. Originally there were no forms in the system and these were added in order to create a more complete system. It is pretty obvious that the initial forms (Short & Long Forms I & II) were created by someone with a more traditional martial arts background ( supposedly Jimmy Woo) other forms in the system are taken from self defence sequences contained within the system with the exception of the Two Man Set which looks a lot like something taken from Hung Gar or Hung Kuen a southern Chinese system. It is the only two man set in the Parker Kenpo system. The Tracy Kenpo system has its roots in the earlier Parker System and contains more forms or sets (Panther or Book Set).

That's something many mainland Japanese karate practitioners won't admit. The way they are taught in their various karate systems are solely based on sparring competition and their kata training (if any) are mere decoration to exude a false aura that their arts are rooted in the so-called ancient martial tradition, with absolutely no practical understanding of the hidden combative applications. All you need to do is to come over here and see various schools. You can see either a glorified game of tag, or a sad imitation of the competent Thai boxing. I bet this Waku guy is no exception when it comes to the combative side of karate. In conclusion, if you want to be able to handle yourself in the contemporary self-defense situations in America, always go to someone who teaches kenpo, not some Japanese dude who can fight but knows nothing about self-defense.

I was a street fighter as a child. Later as a teen, I studied White Tiger Kung Fu and Chinese Kempo Chuan Fa. I never got far as I never had the money. I can tell you that when we were taught to start a kata, we were to bow first. Then, we would make a fist and cover it as a "sword and shield" salute, demonstrating that these are your weapons and you are presenting them in a nonthreatening way (in other words you are not there to fight). The "Long Form 1" kata was a kata that I learned in both Chinese systems as a beginner. The short form 1 was similar but without the punches. We also closed the katas with the "sword and shield" salute. I always found that the movements were very circular and flowing. My son is studying a mix of jujitsu and judo (after his gymnastics base). As a side note, I remember beyond being tested in physical skills, we had to take a written test in Chinese Kempo Chuan Fa, regarding the history of the martial arts style,+ as well as certain key points like how much damage can be done in each strike area etc. I also remember that I had to recite, "I come to you with only karate, empty hands, I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor, should it be a matter of life or death, right or wrong, then here are my weapons, Karate, my empty hands." (Keep in mind that I learned that when I was 16 and I am 50 now.)

Hi Sensei, I'm a kenpoist for very long time, I've also practiced Judo, Aikido, and BJJ. Kenpo, like many other martial arts, are useless out of context, you can't expect to use BJJ vs 3 opponents at the same time, and you can't expect to see a Boxer performing a perfect Shotokan Kata because is not part of his concerns. Kenpo is about learning different scenarios of defense in an ideal state (where your uke always attacks and reacts as is expected) BUT at the same time being aware that outside the dojo YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO APPLY THE SPECIFIC DEFENSE TECHNIQUES. Is not like if someone tries to punch my face with a right circular punch I'm supposed to replicate the FIVE SWORDS defense technique (Orange Belt). That would be equivalent to tell your opponent to wait while you perform a SANSHIN KATA before fighting. You practice a Kata not to perform the kata in a specific situation, but to develop the skills needed in a specific situation. Another example, in BJJ you can and you should surrender as many times as you need in order to keep learning, but in a real fight you simply can't give up and tell your opponent to leave you and try again. Many people judges Kenpo by what they see in the dojo, assuming it could not be done outside, and it's true, because is not supposed to be done outside the dojo. I love Kenpo, Judo, BJJ and Aikido, BUT outside, in real world I will do what I have to do, not any of those but just what I have to do.

1. As far as I can tell, all 3 of the Kenpo-Guys have the "Ed Parker American Kenpo Karate" as a base, stylistic differences may still be visible, because many schools are having different thoughts on this what you describe as "impact". Usually most "American Kenpo Karate" uses more "flow" than "impact"... This is my opinion, but Shotokan is one extreme, because it uses almost too much focus on "impact power" making it difficult to do fast combination of strikes, American Kenpo is another extreme, uses almost too much movements fast and flowing, which can ruin power generation of strikes. But again, this is only my personal opinion. I practice mostly Kyokushin and Dutch Kickboxing which has totally different "power generation"-ideas than Shotokan or American Kenpo.

Ed Parker created the forms after he had created the sets of techniques. The forms are like Okinawan Kenpo a series of the systems techniques done with the same footwork etc as you would if you where doing a two man set, the forms are simply aid to memory tools to record the techniques and principles but it’s important to remember that the fighting techniques they record came first the forms where created from them not the other way around, so in theory if you know the two man fighting techniques the forms should all make sense because you already know the applications.

No, there arent different styles of kenpo. More or less they just do some things differently in some cases. For the most part, katas are the same wherever you go. I am a 3rd degree black belt in american kenpo. I will do my best to explain and answer the questions you posed in this video. First Kata is called Short Form 3, it's a green belt (a step below brown) and it shows and teaches linear and angle movements. 2nd kata is a 2nd degree black belt kata called long form 5. It incorporates and shows takedown maneuvers (good eye). This kata is performed by Mr Solis of Casa De Kenpo. Long Form 1 (short form 1 with punches) is a purple belt kata (one step below blue and one above orange) and reaches transitional stances and adds punches. Performed by Phillip Sahagun of Las Vegas Nevada. Hes a sport karate competitor for kata, which is why he looks better than most Long form 2 is a blue belt form and adds transitional stances, punches, kicks to short form 2. It is an elbow strike and you ARE supposed to look where u are striking. The beginning of each form is called the "Salutation". The finger signifies the form. 1 half knuckle for example, signifies short form 1. A full finger (number 1 sign on the palm for example) signifies a long form. So for example, 2 fingers signifies long form 2. The stepping in with right foot (at 3:00) and stepping to 12:00 with left foot (in cat stance) and left hand over right at 12:00 is a homage to chinese martial arts. Rolling hands back into a horse with "rising sun", "left over right fist" and then "prayer" is an homage to all 3 cultures in martial arts. Japanese, chinese, western. The style I practice is related to American Kempo. From what I have researched, our version of Okinawan Kenpo came from the same source of Ed Parker's kenpo (Chow), and didnt really use kata. Ed Parker incorporated more Chinese martial arts, and invented new forms. The style I practice went the other way. It picked up Okinawan Kata, and Robert Trias' Shuri ryu. I was able to trace our lineage to Motubu because of Shuri ryu. It is also speculated that Mitose may have learned naihanchi from Motubu, or one of his students while he was educated in Japan, and refers to Motubu as a great kenpoist. There is also a descent number of Okinawans that immigrated to Hawaii. I believe the only kata Mitose knew was naihanchi. We practice Pinan 1-5, Naihanchi (tekki) 1-3, nijushiho, Jitte, Seisan, kusonku (kanku Dai), and Passai (Bessai Dai). It has been quite interesting to go back through the history on my style. I believe it was Robert and Richard Arviso that brought our style to Yuma Arizona.

I’m sure many have commented in a similar manner, but the main context for “kata” or forms in American Kenpo…as compared to traditional karate…is the order in which self-defense or “bunkai” is derived in chronology to learning the “kata” or form. In traditional karate, the kata is learned…then the bunkai. In American Kenpo, the bunkai or self-defense techniques are taught first, then the form, based in those techniques, is learned. There are many other differences and exclusive symbology as well (mostly in how the forms begin and end).

The "elbow strike" at 7:06 is an arm break. He's looking down because the back hand is pulling an arm across his stomach. As the elbow is thrown, the waist is turned a bit and the stomach is pushed out slightly to pop the elbow of the opponent. The elbow just pushes the opponent's head/neck back to fully extend the arm across your body so that just the slightest pop of the hips will at the very least hyperextend the opponent's elbow but is meant to snap it.

Hello Sir. I have studied and taught Chinese/Hawaiian Kempo for many years now. The salutation's that you are speaking of in the beginning and endings of the katas/pinions/forms are all writs grabs and jutsu lock maneuvers, hence you are correct in seeing small circle jujitsu (with use as an attack to intercept and clear the gap of your opponent, yet in this instance no foot work)...but beginning and end are salutation's. Usually created like a signature from one instructor to showcase a technique. NOW, if you are talking about American Kempo it is the same work comming from the Ed Parker system. Similarities will be found in all Kempo/kenpo - karate/Gongfu, it is the upbringing of instructor and culture of styles origin that appear different with any kempo system.

The hand motions that you questioned at 2:23 in the video are part of the long or formal bow performed at the beginning of a form. When the front hand is displayed in front of the other, the practitioner is displaying the number of the form being done. Some forms have a variation that are called short and long. Two fingers bent over half way would be Short Form 2. Two fully extended fingers is Long Form 2. In this instance he is indicating that he will be doing Form 5 by showing all 5 fingers on the front hand. The second section of hand gestures that you question are also part of the formal bow or salutation. Hands above the head in a diamond showing we have no weapons. The middle pose has several meanings but in this case it means we hide our secrets. The palms together at the end is praying for forgiveness. At least this is what was taught by my school.

Ed parker was the founder of American Kenpo Karate. He spent time in Hawai'i learning Karate, Japanese Ju Jitsu, and some Kung Fu and mixed them together. There isn't much ground fighting/grappling, but it's interesting to see Kenpo instructors who have experience with other arts and have sparred and fought real fights vs. those that haven't. For example my instructor's ex wife taught Dan Zan Ryu Ju Jitsu so he knows how to properly teach the counters and the take downs to Ju Jitsu locks in some of the self defense techniques. This difference in competencies among instructors is common in Kenpo today because Ed Parker didn't appoint a successor before he died. This caused Kenpo to become fractured among the different lineages of his 1st generation of students and for the standards of each school to vary greatly. Some Kenpo schools will be great for self defense, some good for exercise and maybe point Karate, and some are gimmicky and really bad and ineffective.

The 3rd guy doing long-form two, that form along with other higher belt forms in a combination of techniques. So the elbow strikes are specific to where it would hit the body in a technique. The beginning and ending 'salute, are' used in starting a class and ending, as well as to start forms and end them. It does have meaning.

Hi Sensei. I have studied Shotokan since 11 years old. I'm now 46. Along my life I've studied Kenpo to a 5th degree level. I love both styles. They are like the yin and the gang of my life with both pros and cons that I use when teaching and fighting. At first a pure hard style karateka may be confused by kenpo's fluid moves and high "fighting" stances, but after some study and understanding that practitioner will discover a form of enlightenment. Please investigate and enjoy. OSU!

Having come from Shotokan this Kenpo seems to have a lot of close feet stances, which works for quicker rotation, but also looks like it is less stable. But the best way is to see real life application.

Long 1 is the second form in American Kenpo. The "Salutation" has a meaning. The saying is, "We the warrior, and the scholar, come together and go forth; to fight back to back and pull our country together. We have no weapons; we hide our secrets; we pray for forgiveness, should we have to use them." Hope that info helps.

Hello thank you so much for looking at our art of Kenpo I am a 5th degree in and study Bunkai on all of the forms in kenpo.. The salutation that starts in the beginning is a several part process and it has a story of course. Some do it a little too fast and get sloppy while some like the last artist are very precise. There are Two main Polarized styles of this American kenpo Ed Parker ( one of the fathers of Kenpo) and The tracy brothers that kept to a Chinese traditional practice of the arts. I have studied both and belted in both I like Tracy practice more. I do favor Shotokan for its strengths and linear progression but love Kenpo for its Circle fluid movements and Directions. I just opened my school in Morrisville PA USA and love your Channel Keep up the awesome work ...Maxx Fairo 5th Degree Kenpo karate

Not sure if its been addressed yet, but the alternating hands by the hip before the kata starts is kind of a signifier of which form is being done. Example: bent index finger over the palms means short form 1. Extended means long form 1. Same goes for 2, 3, etc, etc

It looked like he was giving the Shaolin salute in the beginning. Some of those moves on the second form I recognize from the 24 combined Tai chi posture. Interesting when you said that lol

The form that you saw with the takedowns is actually known as the takedown form. Its name is form 5, and kenpo karate comes from chaun fa.

The kata that you commented looked like take downs, was exactly that. It exhibited a number of take down techniques performed on both weak and strong sides. There are separate long katas that address striking techniques or weapons techniques. The Long 1 kata, that you said looks more traditional and had simpler footwork is the second kata after Short 1 kata. Short 1 teaches blocking and retreating but Long 1 teaches transitioning from retreating to attacking. The Long 2 kata that you said appeared Chinese was designed by Jimmy Wing Woo, in collaboration with Ed Parker. That began a lot of the development of this type footwork in future kata. Also yes, different schools and masters do make alterations to katas and names of katas. Bit of a trademark thing and each master's signature. This also emphasizes that each person's Karate is, in the end, self adapted. The beginning salutation is of a Chinese origin too. First rooting as in Taichi, then displaying the number of the kata with fingers. The rest pays homage to Shaolin. The fist comes forward as the warrior, followed by the open palm as the Scholar. The meaning of the salutation goes " the warrior and the scholar go forth to fight. To pull the country together. We hide our treasure, which is Kenpo and beg forgiveness should we ever have to use it." As I understand it, the word Kenpo is synonymous with Kungfu and that Kenpo was a marriage, basically, in Okinawa between Chinese Kungfu and Okinawan Karate. Over the years other arts have added to the repertoire, such as Filipino Kali. Kenpo is a constantly developing art.

It is a elbow strike. He is looking down but using his peripheral vision to keep track of his opponents. Some forms of Kenpo teach "black dot focus" where you look at the center of the opponents but see the shoulder, hips, and limbs peripherally to react to movements. It's also encouraged in case their are multiple opponents.

The intro to the forms is I believe, the first movement is a triangle to the sky(honestly forgot why), the open hand over fist(hiding the art of kenpo), the praying hands(ask for forgiveness if you have to use it).

I liked the last guy cause he was not going on autopilot. He had a focus and more of a beat to his movements. I am not a Kempo fan but I feel some people would benefit from it. Enjoyable to watch and a nice martial arts variation.

Again the salutation isn't too long it has a different intent and purpose, it's just right for Kenpo. It's not a failed attempt at doing a Hung Gar Salute, it's a perfect example of a Kenpo Salute.

The thing you point out at 2:22 in the video is normally the part of the form where you show which form you are doing. Lots of schools teach to have different numbers of fingers against the palm to signify which form and at what level you're doing the form. For example, one knuckle on the right followed by two knuckles on the left would be a beginner doing form number 2.

If Okay make a suggestion for a video of a man named Richard Planas Short and Long form 1for better analysis. He can and does explain everything to know about Kenpo Karate (American Kenpo) Kata. They consist of various self-defense techniques within our systems curriculum but they do not just imate a fight against imaginary opponents. They teach the practitioner about the laws and principals of MOTION. That every technique, or to break it down even further, every move has a opposite and reverse movement. It's very intricate and can be very sophisticated as one progresses. It's an art for the thinking man or woman. Its movements are linear and circular and is characterized by it's particular flow of motion. It's a very interesting Martial Arts and contains a vast wealth of Martial Knowledge.
