the use for hikite near/ at the hip for us is. grabbing someones hand or wrist and drawing it back to our hip . like this . www.ultimatejujitsu.com/images/techniques/standing-arm-lock-right-hand-head-block/3.jpg and jungdokwan-taekwondo.blogspot.com/2017/06/taekwondo-and-jointlocks-with.htmlIN the video the hitike CAN be used to secure the arm acrossed the chest. the elbow pointed in near or at the soloar plexes. locked into position with the hitike . leaving your other hand / arm free to punch elbow back fist. or slip into some other throw/ takedown .

The Sensei is 100% correct! I do Taekwondo and for a long time I also chambered the fist low until I was corrected. There are at least two reasons for chambering this high. One is the rear elbow as Sensei instructed and the other is so your punches are actually straight. When you chamber low by the hip, the punch curves upwards rather than powerfully striking straight through. This also slows down and negatively impacts the effectiveness and speed of the punch. Many people question Taekwondo self-defense and the point of chambering the fist by the hip but the truth is the fist was never supposed to be chambered by the hip. It is supposed to be chambered up high like this Sensei is saying. Over time and through neglect and probably also from people simply forgetting its purpose the fist has slowly lowered itself and now you see people chambering as low as the belt itself. Because of this you have many people questioning what the purpose of having the fist by the hip is and you see a lot of people from various organizations claiming that it's for pulling but the fact is it's not supposed to be low and they're presumption is nothing but theory and is not based in fact. This is not to say there are no grabs in Taekwondo but when simply chambering for punches the fist should be high like this as the Sensei says.

This video hints at the paradox of relaxed tension: having relaxed joints with tight fists is difficult at first. In my experience, the key is to stay relaxed until the moment of impact, and only tighten the muscles relevant for striking. I think this is why we favor open hands so much. It's easier to the see the truth of the technique. Closed fists hinder open minds, right?

Hi Shito, hikite in the middle, as I can remember for different situations: 1. For straight line when begin ura tsuki and then complete tsuki. 2. If it’s low, the inner part of the elbow, the join, is exposed. 3. If it is high, the elbow is exposed down the hand line and shoulder can go up. 4. Also to strike, like in kata sandan. Greetings, thanks a lot for the info and videos, so gooooood!

Many thanks for your introduction of Shinzato Sensei to the wider Karate world. In response to your question as I practice Matsubayashiryu I too would hold the Hikite high. I agree with the idea of the back elbow on some applications, but my personal focus is on mechanical advantage. For example when grasping and pulling the opponents arm i find it an advantage to have a shorter lever than they do so I can better resist them pulling against me. Nagamine Takayoshi Sensei also often used Makite style techniques which resulted in the hand gripping the upper arm and so positioned higher. I look forward to your next video.

OMG this was a very insightful video, with my limited karate practice, understanding how to utilize the joint, is such a great technique. I love how not only does he use the rotation of the hips, but talks about the pull back of the other arm.
@schoney13 жыл бұрын
Matsumura Seito chimes in. Here is how it was explained to me some 45 years ago. If we can all agree that your hips are your center of gravity... and with your legs, the more you can transfer energy from there directly, to generate power. Similar to what the master was referring to snapping the hips making torque when pulling the punch out. Hand position for our style is closer to the hip-bone/belt-line than what he shows. Why?... 1] if you let your arm relax to your side naturally... 2] then leaving your elbow at your side ... 3] then point to the target with your palm up. 4] The BOTTOM of your elbow is where your fist should be (resting on your hip/center of gravity) This will insure the elbow travels the same path as the hand from the hip and reduce the tendency of the elbow straying off that line. It will drive the fist like a piston...with the twist at the very end to add the "pop/explosion" to the punch facilitated by the hips. It's not that he's wrong , or any style is considered wrong... its just Matsumura. (My instructor said "don't poke when a punch is better... but a landed poke is better than a missed punch") What he said about the relaxed punch tightening on impact is also consistent with Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito. It's quicker and makes the explosion (impact energy while expending less energy ... more commotion-to-the-motion) like cracking the whip. Thanks for putting up with me ;-) "Hit'm up good" ps: I liked a bunch of the other comments too.

My very first style at 11 yoa, was Matsumura Seito. My Arakaki Seiki Sensei, was a senior student of Soken Hohan O’Sensei. O’Sensei would come by and observe. I took promotion tests in front of O’Sensei and all of his senior dans. Quite the gathering. O’Sensei was very old school. If you were a Kyu ranked student you wore a white belt period. You could only determine their skill level by watching. My Sensei was a little more modern there was white, green and brown in the kyu ranks. Now free sparing started at Sho Dan. But after receiving my San Kyu rank, a Soken white belt invited me to a friendly sparring match. We started at each end of the dojo. Except he did some back kip flip through flying ninja through the air right before me and proceeded to demonstrate karate.

Really good content! In Taekwondo we usually put the hand more or less at the same height you were doing it while the other hand is punching, maybe a bit higher, but surely not so high as he was explaining. Very interesting the detail about the back elbow! On the other hand, that kind of "rubber-like" relaxation is something we train a lot! Not only for hand attacks, but also for those with the legs (not all of them, of course, some are more penetrating).

Thank you for this video and I am loving your channel and your sincerity. In our style of Yuishinkai, our hikite is different depending on what style of kata we are doing, so if we are doing shuri-te, we have the hands by our belt, naha-te we have a high hikite and then for tomari te it usually since between the other 2. Ultimately for our students we want their shoulders to be relaxed so at times a high hikite doesn't suit them for that, so we just emphasis on what is best and natural for their body.

I learnt a style of Goju Ryu that was transplanted to Taiwan during the 60's. Our hikite was much higher for grappling reasons, as you wanted to pull your opponent chest to chest to do a Ouchi geri leg reap. I am much younger so I learnt it this sort of hikite directly from my father, who returned to the the style 10 years during the 80's -90's and found grappling karate was being phased out for more "WKF" point sparring.

In SKA Shotokan, we bring the Hikite to the hip just as you do. I don’t know why, probably that was how it was done a Waseda where Mr. Ohshima went to college and trained. However, one of my first teachers, Henry, held his Hikite just as this Okinawan Sensei does. One day a student was doing his Hikite resting high on his side and Mr. Ohshima corrected him saying, “It works for Henry, but you need to do it like the rest of us.” LOL. I do my Uraken just as this Sensei does, like a whip. Many people do it with a stiff wrist, but that way you are likely to hit with the back of the hand where the bones are weak. When your wrist whips, it increases the speed of impact and increases the likely hood of hitting with the knuckles. In the early ‘70s, my teacher had me do Jiyu Kumite at the end of class with a guy I didn’t know from a nearby Dojo. The guy was very fast and lunge punched me. I saw it coming and blocked, but he snaked his punch around my block and hit me in the face full force. On the next Hajime, I hit him as hard as I could with my backhand. Later in the engagement he hit me with the best Mai-Geri I have ever been hit with. 25 years later, I was in Little Tokyo in L.A. eating with my students after the Nisei Week Tournament when that old opponent walked by. We said hello and he walked off. I called him back, telling my students, “This is the guy I always tell you about that hit me with the best Mai-Geri ever!” He responded, “Yeah, and you hit me with the best Uraken!” By this time he was Godan, SKA’s highest rank.

In Kukkiwon taekwondo we bring the hikite (danggun-son in Korean) to the hip, the same as in Shotokan. Most of the founders of this style had some experience in Shotokan, so I'm assuming that's where it came from. When I was younger, I remember being taught that pulling the hand back gave more power to the techniques; later on I learned it was a representation of pulling the opponent. Having separately trained in hapkido (which is like Japanese jujutsu), I was taught to control the opponent's arm better by pulling it in to my hip, so that connection has always made sense to me.
@SleepmodeFGC3 жыл бұрын
I no longer train at this particular school (I became very distrustful of its business model), but in the Go-Kan-Ryu karate style, the hikite is up closer to the waist than the hips, for similar reasons as in Matsubayashi-ryu -- it allows the hikite to also act as a reverse elbow strike!
@schneurlawrence1929 Жыл бұрын
Hi, In the system of Okinawan goju-ryu karate-jutsu we were taught that the chamber hand is not a chamber but you're seizing the opponent's sleeve as you pull him in and throw a punch that's why we often open the hand twist the fingers and clothes as we pull into chamber.
@lucidlegends13363 жыл бұрын
I like the relaxation technique since it reminds me of boxing. Boxers usually have to relax the fist and only tighten it when it is about to it. What this does is it allows the fighter to relax their arm and conserve their energy since if you flex your arm, it takes a lot more energy to throw the punch

I too was surprised that the Shotokan's hikite is low (even though I started with Shotokan, but forgotten). In Shito-ryu its the same as this video. Reason I give is that you want it aligned it to the solar plexus just as the chudan punch is also alight at the solar plexus, so that the fist moves in the same plane, and shortest distance.

I train Wing Tsun (詠春拳), and our hikite (we call it Sau Kuen, or 收拳) is higher up. We pull the elbow back and inward. I think part of it is developing strength in the lats, though it's also said to be an elbow strike. We also let the fist float just an inch away from our ribs. The reason is so that even when we are not using that arm, we are still keeping it engaged and active in a sense. For example, if we are doing a one-armed drill, the other arm will be in that position, but you are still training to keep both arms engaged.

Re the placement of the hikite: Our TKD instructor showed us a demo. Get in front stance, hikite high up by your sternum, fist out in a straight punch. Have someone push back on your fist in line with the arm and shoulder. Now drop your hikite to the hip, and have them push on your fist. You should feel your structure weaken. Now, stand in a horseback riding stance, look to your right and put the right fist straight out (this is the end posture of taeguk chil jang), and hold your hikite high at sternum. Have partner push on that straight fist. Now drop your hikite to the hip and have partner push. You should see opposite result from when you were in front stance. When you stand side on, the structure is stronger with a lower hikite. I suspect that overall it's been dropped to the hip for aesthetic/stylistic reasons and not logical reasons, when it should be used different in different contexts. Could be wrong.

Our Kiyatake Ha Cho Bu Shorin Ryu uses the high hikite. It was explained for the same reason as in the video, and also, the elbow sticks out further behind you, so you get more penetration with the elbow strike. 1:28 When a heavy weight is attached to a string; and the string is over a tree branch. Pull the weight up to the branch. Cut the string. When the string is not held the weight and string end both move equally. But one moves down. One moves up. The pull-back of the non-punch elbow is a pulley mechanics. And the punch can fly like the end of the string-relating to the falling weight, and up and down becomes back and forward.-Ernie Moore Jr.

In our Kenpo karate Katas, we pull the elbow all the way back like we're elbowing someone behind us. It's to develop power. In our Kung Fu forms we pull our hands to an open hand guard position. The correct way is the one appropriate for the situation that works.
@joelquebec2 жыл бұрын
Our hikite is in the middle of the ribs and pulled back as far as possible for 2 reasons: One, we are grabbing the opponent's arm to pull them into our punch, kick, knee, etc., and two, when they learn to punch with the hand as far back as possible, the draw back that often precedes (and telegraphs) a punch is eliminated.
@Burvedys3 жыл бұрын
In Goju-ryu (mine is Jundokan), hikite is higher. Because this way you load with a stretch your muscles like in arrow and bow shooting. When released, it gives you an extra speed and power. Just don't forget to pull your shoulder down.

The cues and techniques he’s teaching is extremely similar to basic principles of boxing! First, keeping the hand relaxed until impact allows faster punches with more power. Also, he says the power of the punches comes from the pullback of the other hand, this is absolutely correct in boxing and is something Ramsay Dewey who coaches mma also points out. It seems the roots of Karate were most effective in real combat, while later styles preserved the forms and traditions of these movements, but were slightly lost in translation in becoming an “art”.

Our pull back hand is as high as possible. Other than the reasons discussed, it also seems to prevent telegraphing your intent on the punch. People tend to pull their hands back before punching and the intent is given away. If they can’t pull back in the first place, when they adapt to self defense they also won’t have that habit.

In the kyokushin style the hikite is "up to the nipples" as my sensei always says :D The reason behind this is that you always have a basic tension to strike and from up there the way to the opponents head is slightly shorter (that's funny because kyokushin is the only style I know, where it is forbidden to punch your opponent in the face). This little differences makes it very hard to lern a different style. To learn something completly new is more easy than little changes on things you do subconsciously. After 3 years of shotokan I make the same mistakes as on day one, because I can't get these kyokushin things out of my head I do for 18 years.

The style I train in is Shukokai which I believe descended from Shito Ryu and Goju Ryu, our Hikite is usually just above the obi but I'm not sure the exact reason for this, I'll have to ask my Sensei and see what he knows

The hikite in Kiyojute Ryu Kempo is up under the pec as well.

I was taught similar to the way Sensei has showed you...my hikite is slightly or nearly around the floating rib. My reasoning or the reasoning is you cannot acheive maximum power when performing the punch straight from the hip. In fact throwing the punch straight from the hip seems like you will have gravity to overcome taking away from the potential of maximizing the power, whereas if your hikite is around the floating rib it is much easier and efficient to execute the punch and additionally you have now added gravity to maximize the power of the punch.

Question about the master punch. Does he move it slightly back before he punch then return it to the natural position?
@KarateDojowaKu3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think he’s moving it back before the punch, but his pull back was very fast compared to Shotokan
@PhilipAJones3 жыл бұрын
In American Kenpo our "Hikite" is usually pulled to the hip as this simulates grabbing an attackers arm to check their height though in Kenpo one is encouraged to adapt to different situations.

Kyokushin and we always use this 50 50 method punch and pull with the use of your hips and always bring your fist back and high up to protect your floating rib

Interesting. I noticed that in Wing Chun the hikite is also high (Master Wong has tutorials where he puts his hands that high)

1:44 the fist and hip are tied. The Mind asks for movement. The knee brings-up force from the Earth by beginning to move. The hip is pulled while the knee still moves. The weight shifts from the feet. This is a whip-like motion. When the knee stops the tsunami moves through the thigh at the hip. One hip pulls back to fling the other hip forward as the sides of the body rotate also carrying the force whipping up which we notice as shoulders exchange. A pole always straight like whittling a chopstick between your hands. The hips stop, but the body continues the twisting wave. The punch like a surfer rides the wave and moves away-being thrown by that side of the body. The specifics after this are up-for grabs, but what he is showing you perhaps is somewhere in here what I have put.-Ernie Moore Jr.

2:30 sensei why do we keep our non attacking hand backwards like that ,is that to attack an opponent behind us
@Soldier-of-God.3 жыл бұрын
In Kyokushin Karate our Hikite comes from the armpit height, as the master has shown here. That is because like he has explained, the punch at the hip level, is for speed. While for us we focus on power. Hence why our punch 👊power is generated fully, to penetrate will full force on the opponent, by bringing it from the position, all the way up and close to the armpit. 🇲🇽🇦🇺🥋

I think a factor in the level of the hikite hand may have something to do with the common grappling methods of the style. If you are maybe a longer range style and you grapple the long sleeve or the wrist and bring it down and back toward the hip then your hikite hand will be down by the hip. However, if you grab the shoulder of the sleeve or the lapel and pull on these to control the uke for throws and punches and short range strikes, your hikite hand will be higher. Just something to maybe think about.

Hi sensei! My mom told me if I want to say kick in Japanese, I should say it Keri instead of Geri, becoz geri is only used when you are using it for a particular kick like yoko geri, mawashi geri. Alone it is keri. She told me that geri actually means Diarrhea. Is it true?🤔. She is a 4th degree black belt in kickboxing and has also trained sanshou for 6 yrs, she admires your knowledge and skill about Karate. Btw Love from India🙏🇮🇳

I tend to strike through my opponent's body (like Muay Thai), rather than snapping my attacks. It feels more natural this way.
