There should be a temple in Kerala for kalaripayattu just like the shaolin temple where all the kalaripayattu masters in Kerala can form a union. They can start a research group to uncover lost techniques in kalari and create new techniques as well. They can conduct competitions and also make kalaripayattu more advanced by integrating modern fighting styles and make it mma efficient.

There are many temples in Kerala which teaches kalaripayattu. But our govt is not at all interested in these things. This art was taught by lord parashuram for the people of Kerala (keralaputhra) but now it's getting more popular outside kerala and dying inside Kerala 🥲

People are not wrong about the negative perception of Kalari. Simple reason is, why there is not a single video available of its actual/real fight ? We have only Demo, Choreographed fights of Kalari Payatt. NOT A SINGLE REAL FIGHT ??? If British banned Kalari, the Japanese had also banned Taekkyon, Subak in Korea. Both the countries, India & Korea got liberation on 15th August. Thereafter, Taekwondo evolved as a Martial Arts & Martial Sport. Kalari is still portraying only Demonstrations. Hence, the reason of British ban and showcasing only Forms & Demonstrations are not a buyable excuse.

Well I think this is a viable justification in my opinion.Tho honestly I do understand and agree with the criticisms that Kalari has we first need to judge how watered down this version of Kalari is compared to the traditional one in its purest form.Also the fact that it is an excuse would be viable if Kalaripayattu was the only one affected,when all of Indian martial arts were affected right?Also there have been many martial arts watered down to be pure forms of entertainment,the most prime example being Sumo.What are your views on this?

Though, korean martial arts were banned, they were only banned for 36 years. Meanwhile kalari was banned for almost 200 years. So, in my opinion there is no comparison between the two.

Those who achieved it in Ezhava tribe 18&half are called Chekavar. This martial art is not perfect. It was lost unexpectedly. Actually MUAY THAI, LETHWEI,KUN KHMER and BOKATOR are all derived from KALAARIPAYATU fourth stage called VEERUKAMAI which means unarmed combat or hand to hand combat, in this stage, we have mushti yuddha(fist combat), malla yuddha(wrestling),vajramushti yuddha(claws knuckles combat) and marma( pressure points attack). So mauy thai, muay boran,lethwei, kun khmer and bokator are all derived from KALAARIPAYATU MUSHTI YUDDHA stage

Kalaripayattu was to be used in the ancient era battlefield not in an arena. Once gunpowder came to be, such arts efficiency came down. In Thailand also, Muay Boran evolved into Muay Thai for the arena. Same didn't happen with Kalaripayattu sadly.

@@darkknight5160 Outdated as in not appear in main line industries such as UFC or the Movies? People think that Kung Fu or Karate practical more because of animes and Bruce Lee movies. People think Boxing practical because of the influencers. In reality, what matters most is the style. This style is mostly agile and grabbing, especially in Hand-to-hand. Agile fighters in MMA can quickly turn tables on those that depend on strength. Someone from India should represent it in UFC. Practice with weapon is common, in other martial arts too, like Kung Fu. Though ofc, you can't just hand in a child a pen to start writing before he knows to speak and say words. So they do know hand-to-hand. Again, no disrespect to you, but practicality IMO is dumb. Because most of it comes straight from just media representation and style points. Style points are given in MMA, though. Not for practicality, but for the hype of the fans. You bring in more money to the franchise, the more stylish your fight style is

I have been studying kalari , kungfu, southeast asian martial arts, boxing ,wrestling , judu and jujutsu and I realized that the Ashtakalam footwork of kalari and so many kalari locks forms the basis of various footworks of wrestling , boxing , silat , kali and locks of BJJ. Kalari is 100% effective . I think To bring back the the actual Mother form of Ancient Indian Martial Art its best to explore all other arts because the missing links that were lost can be found scattered in other martials arts that spread from India and can be found in other countires martial arts .

Kalari should be taught in schools as part of academic curriculum. Then only it could be developed as a combat sport of some sort. When everyone learns Kalari there is scope for real competition and thereby chances for improving its effectiveness in combat sports. The use of pads, helmets and protection could take Kalari to new levels or maybe to the old glory of when it was a battle art. Besides, daily practice of Kalari could bringforth courage, discipline and good behavior by enduring hardwork, pain and fear involved in training of warfare techniques. Daily practice of Kalari is helpful to deal with issues associated with growing lifestyle diseases from sedentary work culture, junk food and substance abuse. Great effort brother. Much needed talk on a subject that deserves due attention. Reluctance to adapt to the changes of time will make Kalari a gimmick and laughing stock in the global fight communities.

@Nandu Could you please name some better combat sports forms
@Soulsurfer369
@Soulsurfer369 Жыл бұрын
@Nandu Martial arts applications in the context of combat sports and real life fights are entirely different. In MMA there are rules like no groin shots, no eye gouging, no hitting behind the head, no hitting on numerous sensitive areas or now even no socker kicks and there are referees to ensure that there are no mishaps. Besides, in MMA or any sport like wrestling the fighters have same weight, almost same level of training and stage is set to ensure the safety of the fighters. In real-life fights the scene is different. The opponents could be one or multiple; trained or untrained; may or may not have weapons; there is scope to improvise anything as a weapon, even the walls and floor; even the time of the day have an impact on the outcome of the fight. Muay thai is a relatively modern martial art derived from bokator whose origins could be traced to mushti yuddha, numerous northeast Indian martial arts and even south Indian fighting systems like adi murai and kalari. Elbow strikes are a common technique in Kalari and adimurai. Boxing is the oldest martial art known to man and some form of it is present in almost all parts of the world including India. As for wrestling, India has produced some of the best pehalwans in the world and stories of pehelwaani are ever presnt in all Indian epics and this land has produced the best wrestler ever ' the great gama'. Origins of Judo and BJJ could also be traced to Indian martial art systems like Pehlwaani, Kalari, adimurai, and pootu murai. Eg. Kimura and similar arm locks are same as variations of 'kopra pootu' in kalari. Triangle choke, d'arce and guilettin are similar to numerous 'kola poot' in kalari and adi murai. Kalari is not a single martial art. its a culmination of multiple systems that trains the body and mind; teaches to fight with and without weapons; against single and multiple opponents; teaches first to kill and later to heal; an even teaches the techniques to manipulate vital points. One need discpline, dedication, patience and hardwork to master the techniques. Kalari teaches one to be a formidable warrior while being a good human being. Based on my experience, The northern style is stylish and holds highly effective weapon-based techniques. The southern style is dirty and has simple techniques apt for self defence as well as hand to hand combat. There are also numerous other systems like tulunadan lahalamura, kadathanadan kai kuthi payatt, kaati paruthi, pilla taangi etc. which has its on specialisations. One might need atleat 16-18 years to properly learn basic fighting; weapons like stick, knives, swords, spear and urumi as well as basics of healing techniques. Weapon training is still relevent today as it also adds to the mental strength to fight armed opponents. Besides, everyday objects could be easily weaponized with some imagination. Eg; Books, keys, belt, pen, sticks, stones; a spear is a knife tied to a stick. Someone who is well trained in souther+northern kalari, pehalwaani and pootu murai could easily become an MMA fighter as basics of grappling, wrestling and hand to hand combat are already covered and became musle memory. As for real life application, even trained individuals could suffer grave injuries if attacked with weapons like stone, stick or knife or thrown to floor. Someone with proper kalari training has better odds against armed opponents than some one trained in Muay thai, BJJ or Boxing. I have utmost respect for all martial arts. As miamoto musashi said 'One becomes a true martial artist if and when they become capable of applying the techniques learned in real life. It's not the art but the practitioner that matters. Peace brother
@Soulsurfer369
@Soulsurfer369 Жыл бұрын
@Nandu You can't say they are the only things that work. BJJ is simply a style of grappling. In fact, BJJ is a derivative of the Japanese Jitsu. Judo is mostly throwing techniques, Wrestling is like a combination of Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Muay Thai is a striking Martial art that uses 8 limbs. True kalari is a battle derived martial art that teaches people to kill. Please don't underestimate what you don't know. Learn Thekkan kalari from a capable master for 3 years and then say Kalari won't work in real life fights.

I totally agreed with you 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Kalaripayat should adapt new technologies as per time something like Krav Maga. Krav Maga is totally adaptable in any situations at anytime. Don’t get me wrong. Kalaripayat is a beautiful martial arts and in fact it’s more than just a martial arts. Kalaripayat has been employed since the ancient battlefields and has been proven deadly until being banned by the British Raj. The people of the South India’s at that time has to come up with something like cultural dance or performance art to ensure the survival of Kalaripayat something like Silambam suffered at that time. Modern times posed new situations that were not addressed in Kalaripayat. This is where it has to change for modern adaptability.

Nice video and insight.....kalari is a beautiful and deep fighting art which takes years to grasp and master according to me..but the practicality of this art or any other fighting art can only be taught through hands on experience i.e sparring be it with protective equipment or not. Fighting experience can only be obtained from fighting...

Yes bro, u r right. U r in search of real /ancient kalari knower. In ancient period maharathis like Arjuna, karna, Parashurama etc. Were the real warriors who were able to fight till any end. I also think they have some special lethal effective magnetic techniques andpowers which differentiate them from today's kalari knowers. U have to trace out those special techniques for us as u r far ahead of us and leading in this art. Actually the warrior by birth inside u is searching for that and wants to reach its destination. I have the same instincts inside myself but I haven't got this art practically and unfortunately. But my heart is telling me to become a great kalari warrior and I will someday and somehow. I will tell you from all the martial arts I have taking this one has the most body control of the strikes you execute and that means you have proper balance while fighting. There is no problem with kelaripayattu, it is the number one martial art when it comes to perfection. It is the most effective and very dangerous martial arts when it comes to real street fight. It was designed for real war and true survival. It is not for a show like karate, although it may appear so. Those who criticises kalarippayattu are completely unaware of its techniques and history. The only problem with kalarippayattu is our lack of respect to our own culture, and the lack of support from the government.
