No offense to Mark, but 8:29 is literally all I came here for. I've been waiting for someone to explain how in the absolute hell he's rolling a guttural. 😂😂😂😂
@MrJonne2000 Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking it's not guttural and the tongue roll with that mouth shape is what creates the distortion. With a proper guttural you don't get the required air flow. I managed to get close the second I just did a low clean-ish yell combined with orc face mouth shape and the tongue roll. It also felt very easy to transition into the growl because all you have to do is add pressure and lessen the airflow once done with the tongue roll.
@nemesyssss Жыл бұрын
It's his basic FC scream with a tongue roll, when doing that mouth shape, jaw forward, it's really easy to roll the tongue, then it's all about trying to make it pretty low. In his live take he doesn't go as low though, so maybe there's a layer where he screams without rolling the R to add some depth.

As far as how Alex does his voice I suggest to people that if you're trying to sound a certain way do it how you're comfortable. Don't hurt yourself, relax, and learn at your bodies pace. Don't cut yourself short by straining yourself. Your voice is unique for a reason.

Not a specialist here. I think Alex Terrible have a strong advantage when it come on how he is build. Big, large at the base nose, wide neck and chest. Add to those an extensive voice and body training, healthy diet and his native language. Russian speakers are pronouncing consonants like R, V, Z, with bigger impact than other languages. Especially their R's. Similar to Hispanics. This song is their 'step up the game' moment. Also, I was blown away by the one take version: the dude is sitting on a gaming chair while roaring like a dragon. Brace yourself 'cause Alex already teased for a new song and their new album it is set to be released early 2024. Awesome reaction and analysis, sir. Thank you for this.

I love when you can see how the language or dialect someone is used to affects their vocal instincts. My guess is that since Russian is such a back-of-mouth language, he has some inherent experience manipulating pharyngeal space like that. That's also probably why he's comfortable playing with that rolled r! Coming from a classical background, it's really cool to see how he's managing both oral and pharyngeal space. (If someone isn't familiar with the struggles of vocal technique, the hard part about making pharyngeal space via yawning is that it tends to invite tension elsewhere that can inhibit your sound, namely in jaw tension and your tongue. Hence why opera singers train for years and years to do that.)

just so anyones wondering it is possible to learn, but for the mid screams that have that tunnely low resonance you have to have your tongue kind of on the bottom of your mouth and slightly forward so you can get the resonance in the back of the mouth, i feel like its more fry based but can be done with whatever as long as you project well enough into the mid and work on mouth shape as described, i learned from watching how alex does it and it looks a little different visually the way i do it, but sounds fairly similar. as for the gator growl, its a very breathy tongue roll, but its kinda far back so it could be considered the soft palate. hope this helps anyone trying to learn!

Have you ever reacted to beneath the Massacre? That's what I want my lows to sound like. He kinda just does one thing alot of the time but I wanna perfect doing that one thing haha. I like that you described the trill thing he does. It sounds like a tiger purring and growling at the same time. I've honestly never heard anyone else but Alex do this. It wouldn't have a place in the kinda stuff I do but I did want to hear someone dissect it. It's wild man lol. Great vid as always. The biggest criticism I've heard about my screams from people close to me is that I put so much emotion into the screams that I run out of breath sooner than I would if I made the screams more relaxed and calculated. But, like, isn't the whole point to pour your heart out into it? I'm trying to learn the balance of having the emotion come through but also calculate your breathing. It's tough cuz I get pissed.

Love your channel and your analysis always fun to watch. One thing is the power Alex can project with these sounds. Often at shows during a breakdown like Demolisher where rhe vox enter alone he puts his mic down and will project loud enough you can hear it across he venue, its unreal amounts of strength and diaphragm power. The lyrics are pretty heavy and i think a metaphor for a specific war that's been happening for a few years. You know the one.

A thing what i think he does to get that secondary resonance through trying out, is that he grimasses his face and really pulls up his nose hard. When he pulls down his jaw hard at the same time it creates a deep cavity behind the tong that creates this grizzly sound.

I do agree you need to get him on the channel. From what I understand, he barely needs a mic during performances, so there's a shitload of projection and belting. How much does that affect tone? Nik Nokturnal jumped on stage with them for Demolisher, he could barely be heard because it was a backup mic for Alex, which is dialed very back. Edit: the coolest parts are where he slides to clean or from clean to whatever. There's almost no tonal shift when he does that, simply fascinating.
