This was a rehearsal, one of our last before the Affiliation change. After this 20-30 minute rehearsal we spent a few HOURS going over the problems. Every show, for at least a year, received a post-show critique, sometimes lasting twice the length of the show. We had a group of young, energetic folks who were committed to doing things differently. And we did, then the station was sold to Gannett (now TEGNA) and they re-invented things again. The 80s were a great time in local broadcasting...

WTCN Newscast (1979) | From the KARE 11 Archives 1054am 12.10.24 jeeez.............rehearsals could be used to spread misinformation or present dubiousness newscasts. i dont think that's wise to film rehearsals for news presentations...

Prototype newscast that presumably never aired, days before WTCN became an NBC affiliate on March 5, 1979 after 18 years as an independent. It looks pretty much how the NewsCenter 11 program appeared on the air, except for a much different intro here. Image at 0:47 indicates much of that footage came from the School of Communication Arts rather than WTCN's studios. Anchor Jim Dyer was bumped to weekends by August 1979 in favor of Stan Bohrman. Reports still on film rather than videotape look quite primitive. Announcer at the beginning is Twin Cities broadcast legend Barry Siewert.

Jeff, You're correct....as I say above, this was probably one of our final rehearsals before the change. The Show Open was a mock up as the final hadn't been completed. I see lots of errors that we ended up discussing for hours post-show. Those meetings were brutal....every decision made during the live show was questioned and dissected. It appears that Sports was edited out of the recording, hence that weird shot going into Sally's report on divorce. Check out the credits! Who does that anymore?? BTW, Jane Mitchell is now Jane Velez Mitchell, recently of CNN evenings. We're all getting older.

Fire seems to have been a major killer in the 1970s...so many of these old broadcasts have stories about residential infernoes.

Agreed. KARE 11 News has been losing a log of viewers by messing up their programming schedule.

I’m surprised they are celebrating their history. I thought everyone one was bigoted in the past?
