There's something else to this story that they're not saying because there's really no way for a mayor to be blindsided by the fact that the entire police force is suddenly resigning out of nowhere. For years our local Sheriff Department Officers were greatly underpaid, resulting after new Officers were sent thru the Academy, they left to better paying Departments. Our new Sheriff went to the Commission and explained the reason for the turnover and why officers were leaving after the County was paying thousands for the Academy just for them to leave months later. He succeeded in getting Officers a big increase in pay. Problem solved.

My girl friend was from the City of Zumbrota, only few miles away from Goodhue. The entire population of the city was like 1,000 people on average, so seven deputies including a sheriff is quite significant head counts for such a small town.

I checked & the population is about 1100. I agree with you, 7 officers seems like a lot for that size town. The town closest to where I live in west central MN has about the same population & they don't even have a police force. They rely on the Sheriff's office for policing. They used to have a force but that was only 2 officers. They said this is a quiet town but then why would you need 7 officers for that small of a town? Something fishy there I think.

They are quitting now because their pay periods are up, presumably. If they quit later, then it might be a breech of the new contract or something. That's usually how these things work, people fulfill whatever minimum they are required to do, and then leave. "The bag" in this case would be "responsibility for policing in the town, with far less than the expected number of officers." I just find it hilarious what conclusions people are jumping to with no evidence whatsoever, when the simple answer makes perfect sense.

Other outlets point ou the chief was recruiting for the town but got no support and a non competitive salary cap. Also not mentioned here was that 5 of the 7 were part time. In July, the chief pleaded with the town council to take immediate action. He had “zero applicants and zero prospects.” I suspect July wasn’t the only time he voiced a concern. I think the blindsided comment was political theater.

Exactly! The community I live in is just about the same size, and we have no police, just two or three deputies that typically cover the area, but B could be called as far as 60 miles away. So if the deputies are too far away, one of us citizens with just have to harass each other about driving a little too fast, chase the dog away, or direct traffic if a cow got out on the highway.

Crime stats would tell you how much risk the police officer are talking, how effective they are, and how hard they worked....examples would be felony vs misdemeanor arrests, arrests vs crime rate....IE their pay maybe on the low scale, but if they spend their day drinking coffee, and handing out parking tickets its not a bad gig, on the other hand if they are responding to arm robbery, domestic violence calls, break ins...

Town of 1200.... Do they really need their own police force? Can't the sheriff handle this? Do they care about losing the police for reasons other than revenue generation? I doubt it, they were probably treated like ticket writers.

ticket writers - that's a good one. trouble is most cities just consider their police as a source of income. i was a cop for nearly thirty years, and all the chief and the city manager did was gripe about not seeing enough traffic tickets being written. we were ordered to fill a quota one year, the residents wouldn't help investigators for a year after that.

I live in a town of 5500 people and we contract to the local county sheriff. 7 cops for 1500 people it’s an overkill. Salaries are 1/3 of the budget. Paying for the weapons, squad cars, maintenance, possibly the police station etc it can add up to another 2/3 in terms of costs. That’s how you end up with cops with nothing to do all day, start giving parking and speeding tickets and setting speed traps to justify their existence.

Being an ostrich suits you. Simple math tells you that staffing 3 shifts per day, by the end of the week, w/ two days off, manpower is exhausted. Single officer response is @ best dangerous, given the murder of police officers around the state & neighboring Wisconsin. These tragic incidents, are largely in similar small communities. On the face, if this city received coverage w/ a mere 7 sworn personnel, consider yourselves blessed . Policing is a thankless profession in 2023, & performing this function below market value is illogical. Doubt the sheriff has the current resources to provide relief. Try posting signage: No crime zone, & if needed, no one is responding.
