@@casualweekday-ytshadowbang2469 And that is exactly why the Chief quit a week ago and his protection racket buddies all decided to quit a week later. Minnesota is ACTUALLY tired of big government. The rest of you people just pretend. So yeah, the courageous "defenders" of our community quit en masse, because we cut their pay/benefits and got rid of the crappy cops. For the record, they still spent the vast majority of their time sitting around doing not much of anything at all. It's not like Goodhue is a hotbed of criminal activity... even less so now that those cops are gone. Not to mention that if a large number of them felt that way, then even if 1-2 of them were fine with it, they wouldn't want to stick around and be left holding that responsibility alone. @kevinallies1014 It sounds like the department was in pay negotiations, where their current contracts were ending and a new one would be needed. They are quitting now because their pay periods are up, presumably. If they quit later, then it might be a breech of the new contract or something. That's usually how these things work, people fulfill whatever minimum they are required to do, and then leave. "The bag" in this case would be "responsibility for policing in the town, with far less than the expected number of officers." I just find it hilarious what conclusions people are jumping to with no evidence whatsoever, when the simple answer makes perfect sense.

What are you even going on about? This short local news story gave the story: the 7 officers and chief quit because they didn't like the 5% pay increase. Goodhue has a whopping population of 1,252 people, and naturally, not all of them are even taxpayers. I'm sure the pay was commensurate for their actual danger and what the municipality could afford. Have you bothered to look up the crime rate in Goodhue? It's double digits below the national average. Those cops got a bigger raise than I did! They put the entire town at risk. Good, the city will go to county services and those 7 officers and 1 chief can go be a cop elsewhere. They clearly don't hold a sense of community. Let them go to Chicago and see if they'd rather the lower pay or the increase risk of injury and death. Pft.

I live in a town of 5500 people and we contract to the local county sheriff. 7 cops for 1500 people it’s an overkill. Salaries are 1/3 of the budget. Paying for the weapons, squad cars, maintenance, possibly the police station etc it can add up to another 2/3 in terms of costs. That’s how you end up with cops with nothing to do all day, start giving parking and speeding tickets and setting speed traps to justify their existence.

Being an ostrich suits you. Simple math tells you that staffing 3 shifts per day, by the end of the week, w/ two days off, manpower is exhausted. Single officer response is @ best dangerous, given the murder of police officers around the state & neighboring Wisconsin. These tragic incidents, are largely in similar small communities. On the face, if this city received coverage w/ a mere 7 sworn personnel, consider yourselves blessed . Policing is a thankless profession in 2023, & performing this function below market value is illogical. Doubt the sheriff has the current resources to provide relief.
