Notice how in the original flashback, it's not just Mufasa's death scene copy pasted with a windows movie maker fade transition; Simba remembers it as something so horrible, so traumatic, and it's reflected in the bright red that also fits the palette of the current scene. In the new version, it clashes so badly with what's currently happening, almost as if Mufasa's death was a happier moment for Simba than hanging from a rock is.

My biggest issue with this scene, aside from the lack of drama in the animation, is Simba's reaction to the confession, it's way too composed. I mean, he's way too composed throughout, but the confession is really egregious. It sounds way too rehearsed, too controlled. In the original, he reacts with the level of shock, rage, and immediate aggression we expect in his voice. In the remake, it sounds more like he found out a day ago and had thought out what to say when confronting him.

It’s crazy how they managed to downgrade every. Single. Aspect. Of the remake. Let’s talk about the original first: the music is extremely powerful. The way the strings staccato at the beginning to emphasize tension REALLY sells the moment. Simba’s dread, and Scar turning the tides with his usual manipulation to sway the lionesses against him. The music is half the battle in his scene. Everything about it is so potent and meaningful; every note, every trill pushes the scene forward. Every character’s expression contributes. There is an OVERFLOW of emotion. And when Simba admits, its all he can even muster to say “I did”... he can’t manage anything else. And this is powerful. Sarabi’s look of despondency as she pleads with her son; begs him to tell her it isn’t true. And we hear that classic Lion King theme; that ridiculously emotional, complex melody. The music is quiet here to emphasize Simba’s lamentation and further acceptance, and it does so brilliantly. And when Scar says “he admits it! Murderer!” The way the music suddenly booms into the foreground followed by that riveting crash of lightning gives me goosebumps every time. It’s simple and so effective. The way Scar circles Simba, berating him all while Simba can’t even defend himself, because he’s convinced his uncle is right. And one thing I especially despise about the remake is the exclusion of the pivotal line “oh, Simba. You’re in trouble again. But this time, daddy isn’t here to save you. And now everyone knows why!” It’s really good writing. The way Scar words this is so demeaning, and it mocks the fact that they’re actually family. ”you’re in trouble again” reminding us of the mistakes Simba made as a kid that supposedly led to his father’s death. And the TIMING. Everything is timed so purposefully, and the cadence and delivery swells with the music as Simba is pushed off the edge of Pride Rock. And then we get that brilliant confession from Scar, and I can’t stress enough how good Jeremy Irons is at making every word leak malice. After his confession, the chilling off-chord that plays as we are flashed back to Mufasa’s death (the visual of him falling into the stampede is so well executed in this version) really rings home this feeling of horror and realization. And the way Simba is then invigorated to LEAP up from the cliff and onto Scar. Not just nibbling his neck fluff, LEAPING up and out of his clutches only to pin him down and gain the upper hand. It’s perfect. All of it is perfect. And then there’s the remake. The first thing I notice is the lazy blocking. Why would Scar lay down at the beginning as he’s talking to Simba? Was there really nothing else they could think of to emphasize nonchalance? The completely BLANK expressions of the characters doesn’t help. The lionesses (who in the original look terrified and uncertain) look like they’re watching a cat toy. It’s awful. And I really hate to knock an actor, but the guy playing Simba is not doing him any favors either. His delivery is bizarre and he’s putting the emphasis in all the wrong places. The way he says “it was me” or whatever (I say whatever because it’s already not as memorable) followed by that weird-ass “I’m sorry” to Sarabi? Why even add that? Why would he say “I’m sorry”? I’m not saying the apologetic sentiment is out of place, but Simba’s body language and what he said in the original already fully conveyed the feeling of remorse and that he felt sorry. So this addition kinda cheapens it. It just feels off. And of course when Scar says yada yada “he admits it! Wakwkaksa!” there’s NO lightning strike because John Favreau doesn’t think adding drama to a fictional movie about talking lions is realistic. Thanks John. Instead we get bland boring lighting over bland boring lions and SOMEHOW even Zimmer’s chilling score is downgraded. Whether it’s the instruments themselves or the composition, the emotion feels watered down. It’s lessened. Just like the rest of the scene. There’s some new dialogue from Scar during this scene that isn’t completely bad, but at the same time... it’s kind of superfluous. It’s things that don’t really add anything to the scene and are just there to make it feel different. They don’t serve any purpose. And for god’s sake that stupid flash back to hilariously blocked Mufasa falling off the cliff completely saps the tension. It’s literally funny. Simba’s stupid little chipmunk scream is comical. In the original the complete DESPAIR in Simba’s voice destroys me. The delivery is amazing. And so is Mufasa’s terrible scream. But in the new version it’s like “aaaaaaaahhh.....” and Simba’s like “nOOOEE” And it just sucks. It all sucks. The remake sucks. And the original is a masterpiece. Edit: bass-boosting Chiwetel’s voice was an extremely lame choice and it’s super obvious eww- why didn’t they just get Jeremy Irons back? The man literally sounds the same. They brought back wholesome geezer James Earl Jones but wouldn’t bring back arguably the most iconic voice in the movie? Ew Disney. Ew. The scene is so forced omg I can’t believe how bad it is. Why is everyone’s delivery so weird? They don’t even talk like real people. Simba has ZERO emotion in this scene and in the original the emotions are literally through the roof. 1994 Lion King is one of the most emotion-heavy movies I’ve ever seen, yet this shallow remake manages to be one of the most EMOTIONLESS movies I’ve ever seen, how did they even manage that? They managed it by not caring. It was an easy billion for them. That’s all they wanted. To bank on peoples’ nostalgia and fill their own pockets. That’s what Disney is now.
@thelemurofmadagascar91832 жыл бұрын
Literally all of this. Thank you. But one point I'd like to elaborate is how stupid Simba's "I'm sorry" sounds. Why does he sound so nonchalant? I've heard actual children apologize with more emotion and sincerity for just breaking dishes, meanwhile Simba is supposed to be apologizing for *the death of his own father* but instead he sounds like he's saying sorry for getting a C on a math quiz or something. How did Jon ever look at any of this and think it was acceptable??!!

The thing I’ve noticed about Scar in the original movie is that he uses the least amount of words to get the most amount of impact when accusing Simba of being a murderer. In the live action, he didn’t need to keep demanding, “Say it!” as he backs Simba down. Maybe for the hyenas, but once would have been enough for Scar if they built up his menacing presence in Be Prepared.

Seeing the 2019 live action/cgi version after the 1994 animated classic hurts so much. All the life and personality has been completely sucked dry. People will continue to watch the 1994 animated movie cause it's timeless and anyone can watch it (my nephews love it!), while the 2019 version will fade into obscurity; the only use I could think of it would be to use it in film school as an example on when a remake fails.

@naterivers61072 жыл бұрын
@@noodles_poodles392 In a way, yes actually. Like it's even more silly to see a photo realistic lion try it's hardest to emote, sing and move like a cartoon than seeing an actual cartoon do it. Though seeing the dinosaur planet thing, I'm honestly convinced this was just a proof of concept to show the technology was possible while casually making 7 figures. Not cause the move itself was any good, but because Lion King is so beloved you'd have to do a theatrical release of a bunch of furries dressed as lions in a fur pile with the Lion King logo slapped on it not to profit well into the billions. And even then it would make money just because the title alone is that damn powerful. For more on this, look into the marketing for Craptain Marvel. Yeah, the 4th wave feminist drivel was there, but it was mostly market as you needed to see it understand what went on to be the most profitable movie in history, Avengers End Game.

All these years later and the original animated scene is _still_ giving me chills. Which leads to my question. Who the heck thought that the CGI remake (I refuse to call it live action because it isn't) was a good idea? I feel absolutely nothing at all watching the scene from the remake.

In the original 1994 movie, Simba comes determined to confront Scar, and when Scar accuses Simba of Murder, he respects the punishment looks on lionesses's faces(because obviously, he thought that the lionesses would be disappointed in him by telling them)and is trying to reason the cause of his actions, by saying things like "It was an accident! I'm not a murderer!" In 2019 version, he looks more like a scared little kitty.

Everyone is focusing on one or two lines of dialogue and saying "Oh the 2019 version is great it alters the lines" sure if it was the same and just altered the lines it would be fine, but it doesn't. Notice as Scar accuses him the difference in body language and emphasis on tone and words. Scar circles him in the original, his words stabbing at Simba. In the Live Action "Scar" just shouts at him while laying down then moves towards him. The way Scar pauses and places a claw to his chin in feigned contemplation of trying to remember why the scene is familiar to the dull and lifeless version of "Scar" standing over "Simba" and then just bouncing to claw him. The realization showing in Simba's face is shown through expression and his anger is palpable, compared to the "Rawr I bit you and will now shout at you".

But she's never happy with her family, she's all serious and even an incompetent queen who nearly drove her own pride to starvation just because she refuse to leave her native home and think to the memories of the one she loves instead of the other lives. Sure I liked that Sarabi got more screen-time but unfortunately she doesn't serve the plot very well and Mufasa, Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa and Nala already served the plot very well so there was no need of that. Also in the original there's was no need of someone pointing out Scar was liying all this while because after his confession of Mufasa's death it was already enough Simba forcing him to admit the truth to the pride by pinning him down and leaving him terrified for his life.

The story the voices the animation the soundtrack never gets old🦁
I hate the pacing of the remake in this scene it's so BAD. "It's true I'm sorry" there's no emotion in this performance. Vs in the original, the lionesses look shocked at learning this lie that Scar stated, that Simba is responsible for Mufasa's death. Then Sarabi faces her son, begging him to tell her that it isn't true, Simba can't even look her in the eyes. "It's true." this is said haltingly like he can't even get the words out. THEN Scar pounces on the moment. In the remake it's just "It's true I'm sorry" there's no moment to breathe, no moment of Sarabi begging her son to tell her he isn't responsible for his father's death it's just ALL. WRONG. I understand the intent of Simba not facing Sarabi, the intent is that he can't face her, but it's more powerful for Sarabi to try and look at her son in the eye while she gets the truth, and he unable to. Scar circling Simba is so much more of an impactful image then Simba just HAPPENING to be forced to the ledge. Scar's whole speech isn't as impactful either. THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE SCENE IS THAT HE IS KILLING SIMBA WITH THE GUILT OF CAUSING HIS FATHER'S DEATH. "Ohhhh Simba, you're in trouble again. Only this time, DADDY isn't here to save you. And now everyone KNOWS. WHY." Bam lightning strike. The editing the pacing, the line delivery, the camerawork it all compliments the moment. Why would Scar hammer home the fact that Simba killed the king he just said this it would be better for Scar to eat at Simba's guilt.
