They adapted it from Step Mom, so I'm not surprised the scene is coming off unnatural. The movie's settings, scenarios are kind of a scene by scene match (minus songs of course) with the original hollywood version. They didn't really adapt it with a cultural nuance unfortunately, otherwise this could have been a good depiction of blended families

Yes their are Parents, Guardians, Care takers who make the kid self dependent and aware about what is right and what is not for them from very young. Which is amazing and how it should be . But mostly kids are raised to be completely dependent and with a sense of security that someone will always be there for them to do things and handle everything. And they are not expected to be careful by themselves.
