I just made it and it's turns v well. Really no extra bitterness.The require taste is remains .Even I don't have amchor powder so I added khatae powder & only 10 to 15 mins max I marinated karela with salt. A biggggggg thanks.

I watched my mom doing this for decades. Since I live in states by myself , don't have passions to do this steps but was craving for it. I took my chance and cooked them in one step and result was great. Don't need salt process , use a bit less oil to fry them , when they are golden add onions till semi golden , all the spices she mentioned , few second stir them around and add 3 or 4 chopped tomatoes, cook on slow until they release oil , I did add some chopped potatoes though . When potatoes got tender , it was an amazing dish.
