Of course, it is also very important that you actually like your character.

I mean, some people are just good at mimicry and can express emotions without feeling them...and some roles only require you to say the lines as if they're your own thoughts, and don't require much emoting beyond that. For some people, that's easy enough without getting too deep into character. But a lot of actors and roles require more to get to a convincing place, and that's where various methods come in. Oh, and sometimes the tone that's called for is so heightened that believability isn't even a goal. Sometimes melodramatic or comedic timing and cadence is more important, for example, than verisimilitude.
