I think El never realized that he had an angel on his shoulders. He didn't realize that his brother was watching out for him during his drug addiction. Bobby protected him in a way.

...And he still has that Angel God has assigned to him today! El, will continue to honor Bobby, and his endless Love for him, by not allowing anything or anyone to cause him to fall. There is so much love for all the DeBarge family. May God continue to bless and keep you all in His care!!

Love these brothers. The transparency in their testimonies inspires me. There is nothing more beautiful than a man that knows God's Word and believes in it. I love Chico's reference to King David.

El's family has always said that El took Bobby's death the hardest. Whenever El speaks of Bobby, you can feel the sadness. There's another group that I've been a fan of for years, where a brother died and had such an impact on the survivors. The Bee Gees. When Maurice died it devastated Barry, but more so Robin as Robin and Maurice were twins. He was never the same and suffered the same debilitating birth defect that his twin had suffered. Robin, his twin and Barry worked all of their lives together since they were children and this was all they knew. Robin died 9 years after his twins death. I've been routing for the DeBarge family for years. El still has his beautiful voice. He and Bobby had the best voices.

kitty larue When El was on Steve Harvey in June, he said that after he got out of prison, he realized that God was telling him to believe in himself. He had lost confidence in himself, especially after his brother Bobby died. He said that everyone else believed in him and told him that he could do it but El didn't but he does now.

Well spoken. Yes what you said about the Bee Gees is so very true. I loved their music and followed them for many decades. God please continue to bless the DeBarge family.

Love this interview! It confirmed my theory I shared about El's progressive drug use stemming from Bobby's death. It affected El the most or in the worse way! Love that song she played by Chico. He has such a lovely odd tone to his voice from the other siblings.

Chico is an AMAZING quiet storm...I was at a Jazz Fest in Connecticut. I had just gotten there, just looking for a place to settle in. We'll, all of a sudden I hard keyboards and a beautiful - what I call - a Black Man's moan from the depths of DoAS ancestors. And out came Trouble Man. I jumped up, rushed across the field wondering who was putting a hurtin' on Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man. What. It was Chico. OMG. Talented young man...

Thanks very much for uploading this interview. What a blessing to find this. El and Chico were about to perform at the Atrium on MLK's birthday in January. It’s wonderful to hear El's thoughts and feelings at this time-period. It’s always interesting to hear about DeBarge before Motown. I definitely have to get the song, "I'm OK".

For some reason this woman annoys me with her voice. She trying too hard to sound profound and there is too much dead silence. She is not a good interviewer, though I love the DeBarges.

Agreed. She asked good questions about their musical beginnings and elicited great answers. They shared Debarge history I always wanted to know. It’s when El and Chico give vulnerable responses about their past troubles that the interviewer sounds distracted or as if she stopped paying attention and followed up their thoughtful responses with silence and a generic “we give thanks for that”, she doesn’t distill what they’ve said, add anything insightful to the conversation, or move the conversation in a different direction to keep it interesting. The interview ended on a flat note. I hope that interviewers don’t devalue the Debarges bc of their past and make an effort at engaging them meaningfully from beginning to end. Cherishing legendary artists isn’t just showering them with compliments, it’s also interviewing them with care.
