The BEST Surfaces for your MIXED MEDIA ART PROJECTS (beginners)!

Mixed media art can feel super confusing for beginners! Not only do you need to learn about which art supplies "play nicely" with one another... there's the whole issue of WHAT SURFACE do you create your masterpiece on to begin with?! The substrate (think paper, canvas, wood) you choose to work on serves as the foundation for your mixed media art project or art journal, and is actually a pretty important decision that can turn your creation into a success, or a hot mess!
Today I'm taking you on a field trip to Jerry's Artarama to take the guesswork out of which surfaces ARE strong enough to support your mixed media layers, and which ones just aren't gonna cut it.

This series is so packed with info! I collaged on a stretched canvas a couple weeks ago and I used liquid matte medium. I started to doubt that it would adhere so I've left it untouched. I reached out to you a few months ago, and I watched, but haven’t done one yet. I got involved with stenciling and have been busy making items for a church bazaar using repurposed items from thrift shops, and 1/2 price items from the Joanne’s, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and low priced wood items from Walmart and Dollar Tree. My favorite journal of all time is made out of empty cereal boxes and tape! Sometimes it fun to do this with limited supplies so don't feel bad ;) Think of all the money you're saving!!

I think when you use the gelatos it looks really easy. I was looking for some other just like them but.... can the crayons from Tim holtz used instead? Them I can get..

Yay, mixed media!! My all time favourite (in art). You are so lucky, in the USA, having dedicated stores. We have some but they aren't a patch on yours. Wished I would have washed this before my last project I bought mixed medium paper for. Lol. It worked but you gave me great ideas. I have a plan for a hand made stretched canvas I have specific collage patterns for. I know you don’t recommend collage for stretched canvas but it is a big canvas and I have a vision I am determined to do. What is your recommendation to best collage/wrap the sides (besides avoid it😘)? Thanks!!
