The process of watercolors always amazes me...I would panic with that bold shading on the nose right at the beginning but it just comes together beautifully. Lucy makes it look so simple, that's how talented she is! I'm sure I'll mess it up in a epic way, but it's a process, right? So thrilled Lucy is the guest artist this week. My partner gifted me Life Book 2019 which was my first introduction to Lucy's work. I am determined this year to get the hang of watercolours :D Also last year I bought a Gelli plate which I haven't used yet so looking forward to following Lucy's tutorials on that medium as well before it gets too hot in the summer ;)

Gorgeous work. Watercolor is something that eludes me every time. As a long time acrylic painter, it’s so hard to get the look I want in watercolor. Every stroke feels like a mistake. So different, for sure. I know I need to practice more, but I get frustrated before I even start, knowing that I don’t know what I don’t know. This was helpful to watch...I will press on. Amazing watching a face emerge with just a few brushstrokes and then get more and more defined. I just took a full length class of Lucy’s on painting a watercolor face and it was tremendous! Taught me to paint a face in watercolor the way I want it to look. Also showed the use of colored pencils she mentioned. Now I need to practice! Thank you, Karen, for adding this to all your tremendous videos! I’ve learned a LOT from you and your channel!

Do you mean Lucy? Bryn also teaches with me but not this lesson. Just want to make sure I understand what you need so I can see if I can help you! This series is located at AwesomeArtSchool.com for $17 and does contain all the lessons in real time plus accompanying PDFs. The final of Lucy’s is located here and you can also print out that copy and use that for reference since ultimately that’s what you’d need to do the project. You can let me know if that’s helpful!

I am a member of the Fun Fab Drawing Club and am slowly working my way thru the #100FunFabFaces 20 Week Drawing Prompt Challenge in the LIBRARY. Lucy shows the reference photo for about 2 seconds at the beginning of this video, and then we don't really see it again. As she is drawing and painting, she mentions looking at the photo to do your sketch, as well as where to place your lights and shadows as you paint, but I don't see...or have... the reference photo to refer to, I only can see what SHE is doing. So I was just wondering if there is a reference photo available to us for this lesson, or maybe a link to the photo. Since I couldn't find the reference photo anywhere, I finally ended up taking a screenshot of it at the very beginning of the video, copied it to a Word doc, cropped and enlarged it, used a marker to go over the edges of the lines of her face and hair, then using a light box, I traced over that onto my watercolor paper. I was just wishing I had a reference photo from which to work so I could try freehand sketching the face. Thanks Karen, for all you do! You and your art are so amazing!
