When Words Fail: How to Help Someone Who is Grieving

My daughter just died in Nov after a 17 mth struggle with cancer. She was 38 and such a bright, loving soul. It feels like a bad nightmare I cant wake out of. Theres nothing really anyone can say.I choose to be alone, Im so fu*king broken. i was very estranged from my mom but I broke the cycle of generational trauma ,abuse and alcoholism so my children didnt endure that. I urge people to be that one person to spare your children, grandchildren the dysfunction and suffering. It takes motivation, desire, and mad levels of personal growth and learning skills. My daughter became my best friend. Watching my daughter decline and struggle, and her last weeks was so traumatizing. Being there for her 5 year old son whose dad now has custody is my only inspiration to keep moving. I just want to be a positive influence on my grandson and help him through losing his mama he was so bonded with. Id rather someone say " I dont know what to say" than try to make sense or explain this tragedy. I try to remind myself tragedies and death happen all the time. Cancer is a nuclear bomb detonated in the family. No one gets out unscathed.

Good discussion. For me, that has always been my way, I say "My condolences, I'm here to help if I can." Then I keep quiet, if the person wants to talk, they do, if not, they won't. If they need something, they ask, if they don't ask, as Dr. Robin mentioned, I drop off food, meals, cut the grass, etc... depending on who it is and their needs. And most of all, I leave the religious answers out, but people that know me kmow that I know, and some ask me why certain things happen and what happens when we die, telling me they don't want the made up answers from the pulpit but what does the bible really say, only then will I mention that.
