Helps immensely! At this point, I have thousands (literally) of hard, soft, and extra soft) pastels-I have a very few Terry Ludwigs, as I cannot afford them yet-is there a more economical brand that you would endorse?-I have a good many Mt. Visions, Great Americans, Mugio Handmades, as well as Guiralt, Holbiens..and Rembrandst....and a set of Pan Pastels.....I tend to work from back to front, hard to soft-I notice, and it looks like GREAT FUN, that you work all over the picture at a time...I come from VERY TIGHT, colored pencil background, self-taught. I know I want and need to loosen up, and I realise that the loose rendering allows the viewer's eye to put in the needed detail....Thanks ever so much for these lessons!!!! And Happy New Year!! Kiss the doggie and Kittie!...and I suppose you should kiss your film-maker!(ha ha!)

Your emails and videos are like chocolate ice cream to me: to be set aside for quiet moments when I can really savor them. I am humbled by your willingness to share these amazing tips with us, tips that you've learned through thousands of hours of practice. And I love that you invite your pets into your studio. A QUESTION: when I want to frame a pastel piece, I mount the painting behind glass, like I would a watercolor. The problem is the reflections off the glass are so bad that it's often hard to see the painting. I've used museum glass (which I love), but the price is outrageous. What do you do? Is there a product that can seal the pastel painting well enough to forgo glass altogether?
@KarenMargulis9 жыл бұрын
+jancass51 Thanks for watching! I'm afraid I don't know of an effective way to seal a pastel to avoid the glass without changing the image. I am particular about what I frame because I will only use museum glass.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I also use pastel. What I am always confused is why putting on so many layers of color when the previous color is completely covered? I see a lot of pastel painters do that.
@KarenMargulis7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Mimi. My goal is to use a light enough touch so that you can see the colors in the layers!
@azong987 жыл бұрын
Karen Margulis I see.I will try that. Perhaps you could do a video on how to choose the colour for layering, because nobody tells about the theory behind. Thank you very much for replying to me. I love your paintings and videos.
