Karine speaks of an elderly lady who knew the name of every field and back track. So much of our folk memory is passing away into oblivion.

Fragments of lines "..his trews of navy cotton..." and "...through the starch and bleach and buttons...": A song about a loss in WWI (or WWII), remembered years later? Astonishing craft, achingly beautiful.

I am truly in awe at the natural beauty of Karine Polwarts voice. She has one of the most lovely voices I have heard, and then she also is extremely talented in her song writing. What a talent she is. And what a fitting setting for her beautiful song.

Saw Karine again in Stirling last night. It is the first time I have seen her with Steven and Inge and hopefully won't be the last. They performed most of the songs form Traces and brought them to life with a performance stunning in its quality and beauty. It is undoubtedly one of the finest exhibitions of contemporary folk music I have ever seen. Go see them together while you have the chance.

It's the morning after the US election. I am saddened at the results while it seems we've won there appears to be so many others still believing ... I needed to hear something that was loving and hopeful. I remember driving around Salters Road and Fala Dam a couple of years ago. I wanted to go back this past summer and could not ... .

My attempt at writing out the lyics: She was waiting for a boy In her corduroy breeches Driving on a Clydesdale like her father once had done From muttonhall to preston hall Through all the dales and ditches And an avenue of burly beach that reached towards the sun For miles and miles and miles she rode Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home For miles and miles and miles she rode She was waiting for a boy In his trews of navy cotton Something she had half forgotten is as clear as water now The horseman's only daughter takes the Friday boat to Bergen And the waves swell like a barley field that's ready to lay down For miles and miles and miles she rode Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home For miles and miles and miles she rode Down the spine of the St Lawrence To Kirkwall's stony shore The old north wind gathers her into its arms once more She was waiting for a boy He came skipping down to greet her Through the starch and bleach and buttons he was singing out her name The evening clouds are huddled in so close that you could catch them Granite sheen upon the river and the shivering of rain For miles and miles and miles she rode Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home For miles and miles and miles she rode Down windy manes and whippy law and all the way home All the way home - There's a few things I couldn't quite get (Muttonhall; windy manes and whippy law?), so please correct me if I got them wrong!
